[Troubleshooting] GPU turns on, BUT NO DISPLAY! !!

[SOLVED]
just doing a outside the box build before building the pc, have the msi r9 390, i5 4460, h97 asrock mobo and evga Supernova g2 650w psu
i connected the cpu solid 8 to the PSU and the other end (4+4) to the ATX12 on the Mobo, VGA solid cable on PSU and the other end (6+2) on the 6 pin slot on the GPU connected the 24 pin mobo to the 24 pin mobo
now i turn it on, MSI logo lights up, but my monitor doesn't display anything
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? :(((((
EDIT: worked with trying out a vga cable and using the mobo graphics...stupid HDMI
iHuntBunny@reddit
It's possible that, being a new build, the graphics drivers for the GPU aren't in place yet, so you may need to connect your monitor to the onboard graphics and then download and install the drivers for the GPU. Afterwards, connect your monitor to the GPU.

this was actually the problem!!! hooked up a vga cable and used the integrated graphics...VOILA!
seriously why does HDMI have this problem? annoying!
Relevant-City3408@reddit
i have it too but when i install drivers it just shows no nvidia gpus found
orangeaide12@reddit
I have the same problem, there is no display when i plug in the vga. I tried both vga and hdmi but there is no display. How did you pick the integrated graphics? Just plugging in the hdmi to the motherboard?
iHuntBunny@reddit
yup, just plug straight into the motherboard
orangeaide12@reddit
nothing works for me... :(
_mylittlehecarim@reddit (OP)
hmm, if everything is plugged in right and knock on wood, if u didnt short circuit any of your components, try to see if u can individually test your parts on another PC...
u might have a defective part :P

I know it's been 8 years, but was the problem ever fixed?
Such_Dream_3293@reddit
my friend bought a card and i plugged it in and it displays and works on my pc but it wont work on his pc...tried a bunch of stuff and cant get it to display for em
Dusk_2_Dawn@reddit
Might be a bad pcie slot
LoudTitle2434@reddit
I have a graphics card that wont show on my pc, everything else works but the graphics card, it turns on then turns off after a but, i put it in another pc, it turn on and the fans stay running but wont show on monitor 😥
General_Document5494@reddit
Problem might be the PSU. Hopefully you found a fix lol.

I know this is an 8 year old thread, but building my first PC with 0 experience and had this exact issue. Your comment is what helped me solve my issue and I figured I could add my own info for others still searching for an answer.
Everything powered on correctly and HDMI was plugged into GPU. My monitor powered on as well but then immediately went to sleep. I followed your comment and removed my GPU from the MB, plugged the HDMI directly into the MB and powered everything back on. After this, my monitor displayed the wanted startup screen.
I’m currently in the pre-build test step so I’ll have to install the drivers later to ensure the GPU will work correctly.

All the comments stating that they had to plug to the motherboard graphics are not the solution at all. It is impossible that win10 or 11 doesnt have a basic display driver for your gpu (nvidia or amd). The cpu integrated graphics displaying an image has nothing to do with the GPU, either, cause it seemed the OP thought his gpu worked just because his screen gave an image after plugging it to the motherboard slot (integrated graphics). I've found this problem on multiple builds already and it is a problem with improperly seatting or connection of the gpu to the pcie... And it absolutely always draws me nuts when this happens cause you can try replugging it multiple times and it still wont work.

Bro, help me out here. When the connection to do PCIE x16 isnt working, what can It be? I cant see any visual problem, It could be something inside the slot or other problem? Would a air pressure work?
S1asher92@reddit
hey , hope you doing good i was wondering if you have any idea on how to fix it at home iv try a couple thing like , using a hdmi or a display port cable , i removed one ram to see and it still wasn’t working , i was on a three week vacation and when i came back it give me no display
CrabRagoon_@reddit
So what is your suggested solution? Completely removing the gpu from the motherboard and reinstalling it?
moon10125@reddit
Actually first try unplugging and replugging the power cable. It's been the case on my current new build which I have just fixed 5 minutes ago by doing so. And trust me, I thought that wasn't the problem cause when I firstly installed it I was very conscious about the melting 12VHPWR cable issues on the 4000s series. Turns out it wasnt actually properly plugged in, as much as I had put pressure on it with. You have to make sure there are 0 gaps and it's not diagonally connected.
The thing is my gpu did work for a day, until any slight vibrations to the gpu happened and then it stopped giving image (even if the fans and rgb worked).
In my previous build, with a 1080ti, it was seatting (sagging) problems.
zenstarr02@reddit
Is there any way to do this without integrated graphics?
TRIZFRESCO@reddit
Having this same issue happened after reseating the gpu or reapplying thermal paste gonna reseat it and update
GodMammon21@reddit
did you resolve the issue?

Ik it’s an old thread but for anyone else searching for answers for me the ram wasn’t seated properly

I want to kiss you, you just solved my 2 hour endeavour of trying to get my gpu to work
Massive_Sink_3950@reddit
Dude I just got a new 4080 super and It wont fucking display anything!!!!
moon10125@reddit
Try reconnecting the power cable to the gpu and also reseatting the gpu. I've had the same problem with 2 builds. Both of those were the solution to my problems
moon10125@reddit
That means ur pc didnt post at all, right? I mean, if its ur ram, not even the integrated gpu should work.
Nebula_Dreamer65@reddit
Guys pls help me,my RX570 fans sre spinning but when connected to it nothing displays it is seated properly and I have downloaded the new drivers fcking 2 Times (using the integrated graphics port) but my card won't show up in the AMD adreline software it is only showing the CPU one!!!
NotRay67@reddit
did you get to fix it, i have the same problem now
Nebula_Dreamer65@reddit
Nahh! The GPU was faulty ðŸ˜
SamuraiAshi@reddit
this might be a 10yr ago post, but i recently have the same problem after installing clean windows on UEFI.. i broke down in tears for an hour as i tried methods from the internet... i thought GPU is dead. but i got hope when i tried clearing CMOS, it loads to bios. and so i applied my bios settings. unfortunately, it does not boot to windows.. finally, i tried clearing CMOS again and use default bios settings. fortunately it loads to windows.Â
CicadaHuge3647@reddit
same problem but the red light next to dram is on and my mobo doesnt have a vga slot so idk what to do
moon10125@reddit
You dont need a vga slot to test anything. That was just a noob plugging his screen to the motherboard instead of the gpu and thinking everything worked then (the gpu did not).
Also, integrated graphics come from the CPU, not the MB per se, even though the connector is in the motherboard.
Have you tried connecting the hdmi/Display port cable to the motherboard instead of the gpu to test if ur PC posts? What's ur cpu model? It should display an image if it has integrated graphics, which most modern cpus do have nowadays.
In my case the problem was an improperly seated gpu or improperly connected power cable to the gpu.
knvsy@reddit
you didn't read OP's comments did you? he said he used onboard graphics to update his driver's and then plugged display back into GPU and it worked. he didn't think that his GPU was working because he was using OBG, that is just how he updated drivers which was his issue. you're the noob not him
onparkersmind@reddit
hey this is old but did you end up fixing this? me and my friends are really confused
CicadaHuge3647@reddit
yes i just put the 2 rams sticks in the 2 middle slots and let it sit and it worked

katsreefer@reddit
Did you already make a new thread? I have the same problem
_mylittlehecarim@reddit (OP)
I would suggest making a new thread. Old threads like this won't get much responses.
rizzard21@reddit
Had the same thing happen to me and it ended up being my display port cable was loose in the display port port. So I switch ports to where it's more secure and powers up just fine
memyselfandmemories@reddit
Do you have a speaker inside your case?
activatewindows_031@reddit
bro thank you very much i thought my gpu is dead but as soon as i remove the speaker on the mother board it turn on
