Which mobile phone plan?
Posted by jackofrosty@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 20 comments
I'm an international student coming to Southampton this September. Which mobile phone plan is cheap and has good connection?
So far I've heard voxi and giffgaff. Any comments on these two or suggestions for a better one? Explanation for any choice would be appreciated.

I'd go for VoIP - it is much cheaper, and you can also make calls from your laptop, and tablet. I recommend the Zadarma Project for economical UK price plans.
gta721@reddit
That's useless if you need data which almost everyone does.

Never heard of the Zadarma Project before, I'll check it out, thanks

Depends somewhat on your data requirement. I'm mostly at home using wifi so don't need more than 2GB, so Giffgaff's £6 pm goodybag is ideal.
gta721@reddit
You can get more data for that price and no reduced priority elsewhere.

Voxi is likely the best value for money. £10-£12 a month for pretty much unlimited everything. And very good coverage with Vodafone, and super high-speed internet in my experience.
aye_dubs_@reddit
Does Voxi require personal information like bank details and home address to sign up?
gta721@reddit
They are contract-free so I guess not.

I’ve used Lebara for a while now, and it’s been pretty solid. It’s super affordable, plus the international minutes are a nice perk if you need to call home. They also tend to throw in upgrades after a bit, which is always a bonus. I got bumped up to 30GB for £8 after being with them for a couple of months. Prior to this I was only paying 50% for 3 months cos I was using a discount code

I second this. I've looked high and now for the cheapest and best and Lebara have been great for me in the UK.
On the Vodafone network so signal and download speeds excellent
100 free international minutes to 50 countries - no whatsapp jus normal call to check a holiday booking or ring a restaurant when abroad.
30Gb/ £8 a month early or £10/mth monthly - All on 5G
5Gb deal monthly is as low as £3 if you buy yearly for a iPad or kids phone.
Guaranteed no price rises in the term of your contract
Wi-Fi on London tube when I was there.
Free Roaming to EU, China, India and £5 to roam in USA.
App is great and easy to control 4 numbers on - one click to change plans or stop the service
Their customer service on chat has also been great. They actually can do stuff rather than read from a tele script.
I really can't see why everyone is paying sky high charges with the big providers anymore except the need for the latest greatest phone they can't afford without a loan. Prices also keep coming down with Lebara so when you renew (I stay on month plan in case there is a cheaper one sometimes more GBs for the same price) and then just move to it.
If you buy through my referral code we both get three months half price! I don't work there honestly I just think its great competition - REFERRAL CODE LINK

Get a whole series of free PAYG sim cards, find out which one is best signal for where you are and then get a contract with that one.
jackofrosty@reddit (OP)
Yeah, that seems safest
dyinginsect@reddit
You need people from Southampton to tell you what each provider's signal is like there
If you were moving to Manchester I'd say try to go with EE or one of the carriers that uses their network, to avoid 02's network like the plague and to be specific about the areas you would need signal in if you were considering 3 or vodafone.
MASunderc0ver@reddit
anything running off of EE or Vodafone. O2 always seems bad. VOXI is a good option for the price.
Sea_Confidence_4902@reddit
I've had much better coverage over the years with O2 compared to EE.
CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
I defected from EE to O2 and agree
jj198hands@reddit
Not sure if others do this but you can change your giffgaff 'plan' each month, so if you are without internet for a bit or travelling a lot you can up the data, and if you just going to stay at home all month you can lower it.
QueenofAvalonia@reddit
Smarty are good.
CoffeeIgnoramus@reddit
Vodafone has the best coverage of all companies. So VOXI should be good, and they are running off Vodafone's network.
