Woke up dehydrated
Company blocked on settings. Developing sleep issues. Denied APU, now I’m saving for a decent portable AC.

Dude. Idk why people spread this lie that you need a year experience. It's such horse shit. You can find plenty of places.

Luckily real companies mandate a minimum of 5 years experience, all accident free, be flatbed/os/hh certified, be willing to work for a minimum of 70cpm and the ability to drive an 18 spd manual...

hate putting it this way but....from how I see it, being accident free/reliable/etc should basically be considered minimal requisite to even consider yourself somewhat safe in keeping your job (many companies fire you for missing appointments, tickets etc....I'm not saying they're "zero tolerance" but ya when thinking long term I would look at a good record as a requisite and little more)

It was 20 years ago. I remember the last truck I got was new. It had some kind of auto cabin heater. I didn't trust it I just idled that motherfucker all night long. could just be a bad APU no? if there's unreliable apu units then a fuel bonus is nonsensical, nobody is gonna entertain that at the cost of roasting @100deg all day would need to be a 1k bonus to even b worth consideration lol

View on Reddit #30898892

ignoreme010101@reddit

do you not have a decent APU? i can keep myself barely above 80 / below 80 all day in TX by just doing 2 or 3 'cycles' of engine-on APU recharging getting maybe 4-8hrs between 'recharges' depending on time of day/sun/etc. Sorry to see 100deg that is frickin brutal I mean even from the company's perspective you'd think the sweat produced inside that bunk would b enough reason for them to make it worthwhile for them to remedy this (amd FWIW my company does fuel efficiency bonuses as well, I would guess about 30-50% of the fleet makes their bonuses, I have literally never missed a single one....something I find indispensable is to keep that bunk AC ***ice cold*** when driving b4 a break - if the bunk is 90deg when you cut the engine it is a losing battle)

Just idle it. When you're not getting enough sleep because of the heat, then drive all day, it becomes a safety issue. It'll just be some office monkey (sat in their ac) that's bitching at you. Invite them tp sit in a truck for a few hours with no ac on.

View on Reddit #30892838

trippingballsoutside@reddit

I used to hold a lighter under the little temperature gauge thing on the mirror when I worked at a mega and it would get so hot it would override the shut off mechanism lmao. I burnt the fuck out of that little sensor.
View on Reddit #30894487

jrb031984@reddit

This is what I do on the day cab I drive. Our trucks won’t idle by themselves unless it’s below 29° or above 91° outside. When I’m sitting at one of my company’s terminals at 2:00 am waiting on my dispatch to my home terminal and it’s 89° outside I’m not going to sit there and hit the gas pedal every minute and a half to keep the truck running. Bought a refillable lighter off Amazon and give that little nipple a tad bit of help to get it over 91°. As long as I don’t hit any of the peddles, or release the brakes the truck will idle by its self.
View on Reddit #30895712

pervyjeffo@reddit

Why didn't you find an appropriately sized stick and jamb it between the seat and the pedal?
View on Reddit #30923140

jrb031984@reddit

Because constant pressure on the pedal doesn’t matter. Our trucks will still shut off if they don’t see a fluctuation in RPMs if it’s not above 91° or below 29°.
View on Reddit #30923345

pervyjeffo@reddit

Oh shit, I've never had to deal with that and I hope I never do.
View on Reddit #30923524

jrb031984@reddit

Thankfully I don’t have to sleep in mine like most of the drivers on here do. Every once in a while though I have to grab a 30 min nap while I’m waiting for my dispatch. This is why the lighter under the temp sensor works so well. Only trucks in our fleet that it doesn’t work on is the Volvos. They decided to put the outside temp sensor in a spot under the hood that I can’t get to.
View on Reddit #30924089

Technical-Escape1102@reddit

30min nap? Idk how you do it. I'd wake up so much more tired.lol
View on Reddit #30955367

jrb031984@reddit

With a pillow on the steering wheel. I just lean forward and pass out for a bit. I can get anywhere from 30 mins to an hour like that and be good to roll the rest of the night. Most of the time I stay up and just fuck around on my phone while I’m waiting. I also know there are ways for guys to stretch out in a day cab and sleep across the seats. Some guys use a board covered in foam and we even have a few that have one of those day cab hammocks that wrap around the door frames. I slip seat my truck. So I try not to add clutter to the inside because there isn’t much room to begin with.
View on Reddit #30980899

View on Reddit #30901379

Electrical_Try2977@reddit

View on Reddit #30920029

jrb031984@reddit

Don’t have to. Once the outside temp gauge on the dash reaches 92° I jump in, start the truck, and as long as I don’t touch the pedals truck will stay running even after it drops below 92°. This is why I use a lighter.
View on Reddit #30901639

JobberTrev@reddit

Oh nice. Mine doesn’t do that. Went to sleep once when it was 106 outside, woke up to a dead battery because it got cold.
View on Reddit #30901686

Insanus_Vitae@reddit

My company was kind enough to go in with a computer and override the rpm limiter that shuts the engine off after a few minutes, so I crank the truck to about 800rpm and the truck will run forever. It'll kill the gas efficiency, but I don't give a fuck, I'm not sleeping in a hundred degree cab.

Idle smart is the worst system. Especially if the company locks you out of adjusting its settings. Run from that company and don't look back.
View on Reddit #30964063

sgtpepper5987@reddit

Tons of trucks at my company are having the same problem with freightliners opti-idle system. Gets a safety loop error and doesn't start you wake up drenched in sweat. Gotta save the company money though thats way more important than a multi-million dollar lawsuit after you kill someone due to the fatigue your fuel saving systems cause.
View on Reddit #30950072

palebd@reddit

Got this silly idle smart in my company truck. It occasionally glitches and loses connection to the engine. Then I gotta get up and restart the kill switch. Seems to be working well now. If you don't like the settings, and it's locked down, you can use the fille manager to find the config file, use HTML viewer to view it and the passcode is stored there in plaintext. Didn't mess with mine cause my company settings work well as long as I'm precooled.

My APU’s vents into the truck were set up to blow cold air from under the bed to the front. Ah, a nice comfortable 100 degrees. Said no one ever. Send that Pic to dispatch, safety, the fuel monkey, the boss and everyone in-between with the question "does this look comfortable to sleep in and operate your equipment and deliver your freight safely? If so then go sleep in your car with your windows up for 2 hours when it's 100 outside you fucking penny pinching scum of the earth. We are human fucking beings not numbers or equipment."

This was why much truck almost 4 times idling hours than driving hours :P Boss wouldnt get me an ac, and i couldnt sleep in the heat during daytime (night runner) so idling it was. Ended up with getting a new truck that was cheaper on the gas (But still no sleep ac) :P

If you're not getting the bonuses, idle that summbitch until it's 70° in that sleeper. Find every way you can to beat the company system until you can leave
