I heard them say in an interview that they didn't hate each other to any degree and it's just that they had such different working styles that they could never really connect.
bestcoco@reddit
I grew up watching this show & coming to this realization really messed with me. As a kid I imagined them as best friends & now rewatching old episodes I can see they really weren't...
InternationalHome378@reddit
I grew up watching mythbusters too what show did you watch because they were mean to each other the whole time.
Growing up I used to ask my mom why Jamie was rude to Adam. Then again when you're a bullied kid you see a easier.
ThrasiosOrNaw@reddit
Found a way to make that about yourself I see!
sweeny-man@reddit
29 days late just to bully someone talking about getting bullied smh lmao

I met Jamie recently, we talked about that.
Basically Jamie did not give a shit about entertainment value or the viewer at home. He was way more interested in the actual science and process of discovery/building. So very often he would be having a very interesting moment of reflection about a problem and coming up with an ingenious solution, and Adam would hit his finger with a hammer and start jumping around. Guess which clip would make it to the final show? Bottom line is: Adam was worried about what was going on with the camera, and Jamie did not care at all, and thought the cameras slowed him. Other than that he says he respects Adam, he just is not his friend and never hung out with him.
DJ-Anakin@reddit
I've always thought Jamie should never have been on TV because of this exact reasoning.
ModernRonin@reddit
IIRC, at the start of MB (pilot episode), Jamie said that he brought in Adam because he didn't think he was "dynamic enough" to carry the show.
So it appears that Jamie agrees with you. ;D

There are times Jamie is pumped with some results and comes to life. Whenever he makes some monster creation like the soda can launcher
Dumbbitchathon@reddit
Theyâre like phineas and ferb
verdatum@reddit
I always thought that's what was so great about putting him on TV. He wasn't a "personality", like a typical TV-show host, he was a stereotypical engineer; the type usually hiding behind the camera making SFX happen. By putting him in front of the screen, this show gave attention and insight to this personality type.
(and I don't mean to imply that Adam isn't also a proper engineer type, just a different category.)
VisualNumber4433@reddit
I always thought their dynamic was truly entertaining.
zapbark@reddit
So, I work with people that get on my nerves, and pretend not to hate them all the time.
The pressure for these two guys to appear as buds was very large.
Entertainment is about appearances.
So the fact that they categorically refused to play that part, despite the pressure and career incentives to do so, says one of two things:
1.) They really hate each other, and the best facade they could manage was one of professional courtesy
2.) Jaime doesn't give a fuck about appearances, and refuses to conform to the social nicety of pretending to get along with someone.
Proud_Needleworker17@reddit
Itâs definitely the second one. Also, you have to remember that prior to the show, Jamie was Adamâs boss. Jamie doesnât catch me as the kind of person who wants to fraternize with former employees. Even if it was his personal decision to promote them. Furthermore, Adam has maintained that working with Jaime was a fun experience that never had anything to do with animosity. It was just that they brought completely different energies to their projects, and both of them would pick each otherâs ideas apart, constantly.

I think autistic people probably see it this way
syrioforrealsies@reddit
As someone with both ADHD and autism, Jamie is clearly very autistic and Adam clearly has severe ADHD. While presentations for both can broadly overlap, Adam and Jamie's definitely do not.
Key_Cable9498@reddit
What are your qualifications to make this diagnosis? An introverted personality does not = autism and an extrovert personality does not = ADHD.
ASweetLilKitten@reddit
Apparently one person's own experience is enough to diagnose anybody with anything despite only seeing them in media.
45PintsIn2Hours@reddit
Be careful starting a sentence with the word 'so'.
Potterhead07651@reddit
Understandable, at least he was kinda polite in a way about it.
DaleUky@reddit
I saw a video of Jamie in a video by himself on YouTube recently where he addresses a crowd, where he states, when he is asked what he feels regarding the end of Mythbusters, "it's like I've had a rash for 14 years that I just got rid of'
The whole thing of Adam and Jamie not being friends made me sad when I heard it the first time, I felt lied to I guess. It's probably my naivety of how TV works but I wanted to/did believe they were friends. I feel now Jamie is an egotistical and judgemental dude and watching reruns and bloopers of the show is grating. I get that Adam is there to play the opposite to Jamie's persona but I feel that the way the show was structured and why it was successful was the chemistry between the two, and it was somewhat forced.
rag3train@reddit
I genuinely dont understand how you can do a show for 14 years and not find one thing you both like. How far on the spectrum is Jamie where he can't even try to be friends with someone hes worked closely with for a decade and a half. Yes I get that Adam was comic relief but hes still also a very brilliant guy from what I can gather. Its not like he was holding the show back with his antics.
EEMidnite89@reddit
I donât find it hard at all with some people. Iâve worked on the same team for 10 years and Iâm friendly but not friends with any of them. They all end up getting on my nerves & at the end of the day, I donât want to be around them in my free time. This is the vibe I get with Jamie & I get that. Also ppl like Jamie get physically worn out by people like Adam. High energy people run me ragged just watching/ listening to them.
Temporary-Jelly-6980@reddit
Exactly, look at Penn and Teller, they have worked together for decades but are not friends outside of work. They have said they are very different people and just work well together
Proud_Needleworker17@reddit
Exactly! As an extreme introvert, I find spending extended time with pretty much anyone physically exhausting. It doesnât mean I hate people. I love people. But I can only handle most people in small doses.
newowhit@reddit
Reviving a dead thread but damn I really needed to hear this explanation of why I can only handle people in small doses like you said. Makes me not feel so bad, I'm not the only one :)
PastaWithMarinaSauce@reddit
And there's nothing shameful about that. The person who said that someone who is on the spectrum should just try to hide it to make someone else feel good is wrong. It's like saying if you're in a wheelchair you should at least try to walk, so people won't feel uncomfortable with having a handicapped person around
damien1884@reddit
Right? I say this all the time but yet people in wheelchairs STILL refuse to at least try and walk.
CapJackONeill@reddit
Reviving again, even as a kid I couldn't stand Adam in the show or as a public persona. I understand Jamie. The guy just seems so full of shit.
MC_chrome@reddit
I think the phrase âkid in a candy storeâ absolutely applies to Adam. The guy is smart but I do think his high energy could be off putting to others, especially if they spent a lot of time around him.
DigitalxReaver@reddit
Who said you have to work with someone and be friends? Actually it is the worst decision to ever make friends at work because work associates aren't there to be your friend and jobs it is about competing
PixelOrange@reddit
I've never competed with any of my coworkers and if I did that would go very poorly. We are a team, not contestants.
gayriku@reddit
late reply, but do you mean the autism spectrum? jamie isnt confirmed autistic, is he?
... or were you using that term disparagingly?
Ahappypikachu11@reddit
I know i'm super late too this, but I listened to Adam present at FanExpo Philly this year, and during a Q&A he described Jaime as "Such a Sperg" and "So spectrum."
So while i'm not sure if it's been confirmed that Jaime has ASD, Adam clearly has no problem claiming he does.
robjwrd@reddit
7 years late here today as well!
But I didnât know Adam said that, but makes total sense Jamie seems very much on the spectrum.
No-Weird-7709@reddit
They meant the spectrum of people's personalities you jerkoff
Cross_Coolidge@reddit
Pretty sure he means spectrum of personality types
PM_COFFEE_TO_ME@reddit
Well that says a lot about Jamie then, doesn't it. Don't judge a man by his words but by his actions
TheRealJones1977@reddit
No, it really doesn't.
TheRealJones1977@reddit
Judgmental much? They worked together on many projects so of course they found things they both liked.
D20_Destiny@reddit
What does the autistic spectrum have to do with being an asshole?
codenameajax67@reddit
It's a job. Everyday waking up and having to pretend to be someone you aren't has to get old.
It gets old for me and I'm not even on TV.
iamatwork24@reddit
You genuinely donât understand how 2 people who got paid a shitload of money could pretend at friendship for the cameras? Because that pretend made them rich. Iâve pretended to get along with coworkers I couldnât stand for far less money than they made.
Hungry-Combination29@reddit
They do like the same things. They're just not attached to each other emotionally. They like figuring things out. They like exploding things. They like fire. They like taking things apart. They like fixing things. They're just not friends.
SnakeDoctr@reddit
It's beyond that, too. Jamie actually employed Adam for many years before MythBusters was even conceived.
verdatum@reddit
Penn & Teller have also gone on record to say that they aren't particularly friends. They respect and appreciate each other, but the reason they're together as much as they are is because that's what works, and that's what makes money.
PixelOrange@reddit
This isn't accurate. From wiki:
Jillette stated in a video where he and Teller responded to questions from members of Reddit, and also in a video interview for Big Think, that while he and Teller share few interests outside magic, Teller is his best friend, and his children treat Teller as a close relative. He stated that while most entertainment partnerships such as Martin and Lewis and LennonâMcCartney were based on a deep affection for each other that lends to a certain volatility when things go wrong, their business relationship and friendship is based on a respect for each other.[18][19] Teller has made similar statements. In an NPR interview, Teller said their disagreements often lead to better artistic decisions because they bring out new ideas and expand the range of discussion.[20]
Not liking the same stuff doesn't mean you aren't friends, which is the common misconception with Penn and Teller.
verdatum@reddit
From seven years ago, nice ;)
PixelOrange@reddit
God damnit. Why did reddit put this on my front page. Sorry đ
zapbark@reddit
It really would have cost Jaime nothing to just smile and pretend he didn't hate Adam.
He doesn't actually need to hang out with Adam, just lie to us and say he does.
TheRealJones1977@reddit
Gibberish. He never acted like he did.
Josef325@reddit
A little bit of Adam savage goes s long way.
WearMental2618@reddit
I know this thread is dead and 7 years old but I'm watching on hbo max and caught some interesting stuff.
So Jamie and Adam actually worked together for like 10 years before mythbusters. They met in stage production and jamie hired Adam for some other stuff, they even made the mythological battle bot many years before mythbusters. It just seems like at one point they were friends.
layerone@reddit
You know what's funny, I watched the show as a teenager, and I felt their interactions were bad vibes on that show. Was never a superfan of the show, just casually watched here and there. 15yr later I decide to randomly google this and find a thread about it.
Jamie saying in that youtube video "it's like I've had a rash for 14 years that I just got rid of" it's like common dude. You're a self starter with easily enough money to do whatever you want. Nobody was forcing you to be on that show.
It's the same shtick late night hosts pull after they retire. "Oh interviewing those celebrities was so meaningless and trite" like stfu, you agreed to do it.
Adam was adhd on that show, but you can see from his personal Youtube he's a very kind guy, and passionate about what he does.
Jamie is very standoffish borderline asshole. Like the whole "people are so insufferable and do stupid shit and think dumb ways" is such a lame personality trait, but sadly quite a common one.
TheRealJones1977@reddit
Gibberish comment.
layerone@reddit
Itâs actually clear what Iâm saying, you just donât agree with it, and thatâs completely ok.

Snrub1@reddit
I always thought this got blown out of proportion. I don't think it's that they "hated" each other, it's simply that they were very different people who didn't really care to associate with each other outside of work. This is probably how most people are with their coworkers. You respect each other and are able to work together, but once the work day is over, that's the end of it. Most of my coworkers I've never done anything with outside of work outside of random office parties, but that doesn't mean I don't "like" them.
impl_Trans_for_Fox@reddit
i like the way Snrub thinks!
RedactedGhostWriter@reddit
Jamie did an interview in 2021 for Helsingin Sanomat in which the interviewer asks Jaime if it would be an exaggeration to say that he, Jamie, didn't like Adam, and Jamie outright says no, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that.
Interviewer: "Would it be an exaggeration to say that you didn't really like him?"
Jamie: "No. We certainly had respect for each other, but we really weren't friends ... I need someone different to work with. I think you see this setup as a very kind of Yin and Yang setup that worked well in the MythBusters."
So, right from Jamie's mouth, he didn't really like Adam and never wanted to be his friend, but their dynamic worked on TV.
The original article is in Finnish, but the bits above were translated to English on Jamie's Wikipedia page.

LukasSprehn@reddit
tbh I always got the impression that Adam did try to be kinda friends with him early on, it wasn't well received and Adam stopped trying and so did Jamie. And they just pretended from then on. Adam earlier on was way more touchy with him, slapping him on the back and all that kinda stuff, but clearly phased it out at some point and stopped doing that as much.
Justarandom55@reddit
but they didn't pretend. they did have fun on the show and they were never shown to be close friends. we all just kinda assumed cause we see them together so much. they didn't hate each other or disliked working together, they just never connected as friends
LukasSprehn@reddit
Did you mean to reply to someone else? I don't believe I give the impression of one of the people who think they actively disliked or hated each other.
Hot_Pie_6313@reddit
Jamie is an introvert, Adam was an extrovert. It's that simple.
CompetitiveAd9760@reddit
literally. Jamie doesn't necessarily dislike adam he would "dislike" most people, as in not enjoy spending time with them. Majority of great tv shows have opposite hosts, such as them.
CamCranley@reddit
I personally love that they are not friends and have even said they don't like each other. They both greatly respect one another. Shows that you can have dissimilar interests and opinions, but still respect someone and even work closely with them. I have no doubt they still celebrated the shows wins together etc.
FiddleAndDiddle@reddit
Just watched the rowing excavator episode and Adam says âalthough we donât like each other, we worked well as a teamâŚâ. They clearly have a work relationship but not one outside, I am the same with my work colleagues, have fun with them at work, life outside I wouldnât hang out with them.
marlymcgb@reddit
I literally just came from the same episode! We are watching it with our kids and they are bummed they arenât friends!
Visible-Invite-9911@reddit
Here now from the same episode đ
FiddleAndDiddle@reddit
Itâs sad but they put on a good show
Apprehensive-Wing482@reddit
Yes I know my comment is 7 years late but I'm a busy chap.
Apprehensive-Wing482@reddit
I just look at the end product. And it was, and still is, good. Best of luck to both of them. Their personal life away from the product is their own. That's my opinion anyway.
Separate-Effort3640@reddit
Jamie was pretty introverted from what I could tell and didn't like performing in front of an audience, Adam was extroverted and cared more about filming.
I am still impressed that they got their acts together very well and were very professional compared to most people.
aaronwinterhalter@reddit
Sometimes 2 people can work very well together and have a lot of respect for each other but not be friends. I don't think they ever hated each other, but a fundamental difference in their methods , personalities, and a clear maturity difference probably just kept them from ever being friends. Adam is clearly an entertainer, and Jamie is clearly a very serious person. Both with brilliant minds, but very different people. It's pretty clear they don't hate each other. I have a lot of people I work with that I neither like nor dislike and they feel the same about me and its not awkward at all because we all work hard, but I've never wanted to hang out with them, and none of them wanted to hang out with me, but at work everything is fine.
hulduet@reddit
I'm many years too late!
It was a bit of a shame to hear about their "relationship" outside the show but it made sense. We're all in that position with co-workers. Just because we work together doesn't mean I want to be friends with all of them even if we get along at work. That's just me.
As for the show itself having Jamie and Adam together was genius. If you would have had two goofballs it would probably have been too silly for adults which is how I felt about what happened after the show. It created a balance having both of them and I think it's what made it very popular.
