Texas A&M-Commerce may change name to include Dallas. Some alumni, students opposed

East Texas A&M sounds like bumpkinville. Can you imagine a private company like Microsoft or Apple hiring the best consultants on the globe and landing on such an unimaginative name?
My god, the school is trying to grow and leverage its access to Dallas which extends more than 40 miles from downtown. These alumni need to pony up serious money if they want to determine the name of the school. Maybe leave out the directional and local names and pick a name that sounds good, like Stanford, Harvard, Oxford, etc.

Texas A&M loves fucking with names. They tried to change Tarleton State into Texas A&M Stephenville. Commerce isn't remotely close enough to have Dallas in the name.
Funny_Development_57@reddit
Yeah, why did Tarleton get to keep its name?
50bucksback@reddit
Students hated it

As an alumni who went to ETSU for five years (four Major changes, 142 hours total at grad, long story) but has a degree with Texas A&M Commerce on it due to finishing my last 2 classes at a different school after the name change, people are not thinking of this the right way. It’s not the “Commerce” part people care about - it’s the “Texas A&M” part that catches employer’s eyes.
I’ve been told by multiple A&M College Station grads in interviews that an Aggie is an Aggie, to which I have responded at least once, “Well, if it will get me a job … Gig ‘Em!”
To non-Aggies who have asked if I was an Aggie after hearing the school on my diploma, I respond, “I’m not an Aggie, I’m a Lion, Grrr!” No, I don’t respond like that in job interviews, only social situations.
Funny_Development_57@reddit
Aggie and Lion here. Under at Commerce, graduate at College Station. You can do it too!
dallaz95@reddit
No. Just keep it like it is.
AbueloOdin@reddit
Basically everyone in the general area of Dallas wants to be associated with Dallas, but doesn't want to be a part of Dallas (for reasons... dun dun dun).
It's like showing up to a football game, wearing a jersey, and claiming to be a benchwarmer as you go and sit in the bleachers.
fsi1212@reddit
I moved to a town south of Commerce just to get out of Dallas and the city. I do not want to be a part of or associated with Dallas.
rickyric0@reddit
They have a campus in north dallas now, I went to it and took most of my classes there
sinovesting@reddit
Yeah but the main campus is 65 miles from downtown Dallas.

Just give it a regional name, like East Texas State university or something similar

I should have kept my original diploma!

Never should have changed but if A&M branding was required, East Texas A&M is pretty good.

No longer part of the State University system (Texas State [flagship], Sam Houston St, Sul Ross St, Lamar). Would be East Texas A&M University now.

ETSU alumni here. I've been saying "it's A&M Commerce now" when someone asks where I went to school. So I get it. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Isn't it basically a commuter school anyways? I just see ads for it all the time for online programs.

Texas A&M-Commerce (formerly East Texas State University) is the 5th oldest university in the State. It is its own standalone university. It has satellite campuses in Dallas, but the other way around. Not to mention commerce is over an hour from Dallas.
PYTN@reddit
I had not realized it was that old.
Now I'm particularly perturbed that A&M ditched the East Texas branding.
WigglingWeiner99@reddit
They should also rename Commerce to "Dallas-Commerce." Hell, Sulphur Springs can also be Dallas Springs. Greenville? Dallasville. Durant, Denison, and Sherman should be combined into "Dallas-on-the-Red." Why stop there? The Choctaw Nation should just be the "Northeast Dallas Natives" and the Chickasaw can be "North Central Dallas Natives." Lake Texoma? Big Dallas Lake. The Dallas Cowboys are in Arlington, FC Dallas is in Frisco, TAMU-Dallas is over an hour from the border of Dallas County.
I got semantic satiation writing this comment. Dallas. Why is this word so weird?
PYTN@reddit
Dallas Springs sounds better than Sulphur Springs.
Pabi_tx@reddit
It used to have a satellite campus in Texarkana.
"Texas A&M at Texarkana at Commerce"??
flyingtiger188@reddit
Tamu at commerce use to be east Texas state university, and had a satellite school in Texarkana. When the main branch joined the A&M system and became Tamu at Commerce ETSU Texarkana became TAMU at Texarkana.
Pabi_tx@reddit
I grew up in Hunt County, I know it well. Commerce to Texarkana was a long slog for faculty filling in at that satellite campus.
And there used to be a columnist with one of the papers who would talk about ETSU being his alma mater and every time he mentioned the school he followed with "long may it wave."
310doc@reddit
Just call it “Texas A&M School of Commerce” so people think it’s about commerce, not Commerce.
sinovesting@reddit
Lol speaking of I would like to mention for those that don't know that the town Commerce, TX (where the university is based) does have a "Commerce Chamber of Commerce". I always thought that was amusing.
Snap_Grackle_Poptart@reddit
The University's mascot is the Lions, and Commerce also has a Lions Club.
Coincidence? I think not!
BarkingAxe@reddit
So stupid. Commerce is the main campus
AnthillOmbudsman@reddit
I still remember James Earl Jones doing the ETSU commercials. They aired a lot on Dallas Fort Worth TV.
Historical_Dentonian@reddit
Why not? The Irving/Arlington Cowboys did it. No one in Dallas minds.
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
What are they looking to change it to? “Texas A&M-Commerce” is long enough. Or are they looking to drop “Commerce” entirely?
I don’t know what’s wrong with keeping it as “Texas A&M- Commerce Dallas Campus” for the campus here. Or “TAMU Commerce at Dallas” if they need something catchier for the local location.
neogeo828@reddit
Reminds me of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. They finally dropped the Anaheim despite the stadium being an Anaheim. Maybe they will eventually drop the Commerce.
Isgrimnur@reddit
...and several surrounding communities.
AgentBlue14@reddit
I imagine this was the same thought process people had for naming those far-out airports near London, UK.
"London Stansted" - 41 miles out of London
"London Luton" - 35 miles out of London
"London Gatwick" - 30 miles out of London
And now it'll be "Texas A&M at Dallas - Commerce" or something like that, just a quick 65 mile drive from downtown Dallas.
