Short of inventing a teleportation machine unfortunately there's no other way of doing it though. I know a lot of people do America in at least two trips (one for East coast and one for West) but then you've got to pay a Transatlantic airfare twice. I'm well versed with long distance travel, having been to Asia and Australasia. You're right it's absolutely not fun - particularly in coach - but also totally worth it for the experience when you get there.

Vegas you should expect to need cash on the casino floor itself walking up to a game. Otherwise you won't need it. I switched to a smaller wallet that doesn't hold more than an emergency $20 well before COVID I routinely travelled for work. At least 75% of my f2f transactions now are ApplePay.

Chicago’s CTA trains (“the el”) and buses use a tap system that accepts contactless credit and debit cards for pay-as-you-go travel. There are two things to be aware of if you use your credit/debit card instead of using the system’s own reloadable card (Ventra), though. First is that even though the fare is $2.50, your card will get a hold placed on it in $5 increments, and the actual total fare will be reconciled at the end of the day. That hold may take a few days to fall off your card, though. Second is that credit/debit is charged as per-trip fares only. If you’re in town for 3+ days, it often makes sense to get a Ventra card and load a 3, 7, or 30 day pass (depending on the length of your stay and how much you plan to use CTA trains and buses to get around) as these types of passes are a flat fee for a travel period that starts at the first tap after you load the pass onto the card. The 1 and 3 day passes make sense if you’re using the system extensively as they cost the same as it would to ride twice per day. The 7 day pass is cheaper than pay-as-you-go if you use it 8 times in 7 days, and the 30-day pass is cheaper than PAYG if you ride 30 times in 30 days. (Passes also save you money if the trip starts at O’Hare International Airport, as the one-way PAYG fare starting at that station is $5, not $2.50 like at any other station. The time-based passes do not incur that extra fee.)

Fascinating. I’ve probably come across 1 place in the past month that doesn’t have contactless payment. And it was Home Depot. Everywhere else: retail stores, gas stations, food trucks, mom and pop cookies, local ice cream place, local hardware store….all use tap to pay (contactless). Other than maybe garage sales or farmers markets, I can’t remember the last time I used cash. And even then, those places offered tap to pay (like square or something).

Same here. Even our farmer's market takes debit that you trade for market tokens. I haven't used cash in at least 10 years except for a few very specific circumstances. Even the performers at the Renaissance faire and the face painters take Venmo payments.

I have found tap to pay is being implemented so unobtrusively, and people are already just so used to inserting/swiping their card, that you have to actively look for this option - but once you look for it you will probably see that most places are on board. I just don't think a ton of Americans are used to it yet.

American debit card PINs are optional unless you're withdrawing cash, and American credit cards do not have PINs at all. However, if a foreigner uses their card in the US at a terminal with a PIN pad - they will be required to enter the PIN.

The public transport in all of those cities you can buy passes with a credit card ahead of time. *That said*, there are often far fewer functional machines that take CCs usually. For example, for SF BART the top up exit fair machines are a dice roll without cash. DC Metro does do mobile tap using Apple/Google wallet at the turnstile. But I don't believe I've seen anything like the London Tube's tap to pay system in the US... Maybe Chicago?

In all honesty, in the grand scheme of the trip, not a lot. I don't know if Americans realise how cheap their internal flights are compared to the UK. I booked them well in advance and compared a range of airlines. Case in point, from my research it's looking like a taxi from LAX to Anaheim will cost me more than the flight from San Fran to LAX. A similar distance by plane in the UK would cost twice as much. The biggest costs are accomodation, by far.

I would say chips are pretty much universal at this point in the US. Contactless, at the majority of places but not yet universal. PIN is all dependent on what card you have. American cards don't require them, foreign ones do (if there is a PIN pad).

I haven’t seen a pump without EMV in a long time, and most around me also have tap. If they’re still using non-EMV swipe, the fuel station is now responsible for any fraud that happens, so that’s kicked a lot of stations in the ass to replace because they’ll become a theft target. Magstripe fallback is still allowed, but only after three unsuccessful chip attempts at a card-present transaction, and if it happens too much the merchant could be deemed high-risk (higher fees) or incur a non-compliance fee.

If using Uber or Lyft instead then of course you could pay and tip with the app which charges you card. * Public buses often don't take cards if you pay when boarding, and might even accept only coins. If you purchase tickets in advance then you can pay with your card. New York City now allows you to tap a card when boarding but other cities might not. * Hairdressers sometimes don't take cards.

In America, if you don't use credit you will be turned down for just about everything. Back in 1996 I left my job at the bank. I paid off all my credit debt. Cut up my cards, droped my equity loan, paid cash ever since. It hit me in 2007. IRS woulnt give me my tax credit, till I showed my mortgage statement. Took 3 years to get it. People don't buy farms with cash. Tryed to make payments on car maintenance. Nope, I'm now a credit ghost. If I need a new Job. or rent an apartment? Nope... I'm now a credit ghost. Good or bad credit? It does not matter. You just need to show credit.

Another thing to know is that NFC payments are becoming more and more common in the last few years so you can also use that option. Not sure if it's your first time but just be aware that in sit down restaurants, it's common for the server to take your CC away and ring it up before bringing it back to you. This is completely normal for us and, no your CC doesn't get stolen. Just keep a small amount of cash to spend for small items or in a small shop.

So point by point- * I try to tip in cash, because I’ve worked tables and know how it goes. * So cabs in the city take card, and I do that, but in my suburb cabs are cash only (despite being supposed to take cards). I don't use taxis but have bought public transportation passes with my credit card and you can also add your tip on there. Having some cash on you is a nice backup if you run into a situation (like a restaurant/food truck) that only accepts cash. I remember when hurricane Ike came through in 2008 and power was out for up to 8 days in the tri-state area, cash was the only way to buy something at places like the liquor store. I do like to have a few bills in my wallet for the odd occasion when tipping is expected but they haven't joined this century yet. Taxis are also pretty bad about it in some cities, but Uber/Lyft exists pretty much everywhere.

Hope you like flying. You're going to spend a lot of that 3 weeks in planes and airports. Except for Vegas just carry a $20 and try to use your card everywhere. You'll probably leave with that $20.
