Was dealing with kids watching The Challenger disaster the same as kids watching 9/11?

I recently saw a video explaining that Gen-X is the way they are because they got homework and no hugs after witnessing the Challenger disaster on TV. I'm just wondering if this is true. As a Gen-Y'er who was 12 and home sick while watching 9/11, we got the same treatment. Also, after 2 days of talking about 9/11, we were told not to, so we just relied on the news. Were you allowed to talk about The Challenger?
