My HDD is not showing up after installing a new SSD

Excuse my lack of knowledge but i have just installed a new Samsung 970 EVO 500 gig SSD and made it my boot drive but when i tried to look for my old HDD to store stuff on i couldn't find it anywhere, I have looked at about every video on YouTube and have read all the articles.
My HDD does not show up in Disk management or device manager but does show up in my BIOS. I only started having this problem AFTER i installed the new SSD.
Any help with the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Have you configured your SATA to AHCI in BIOS?
Now, which port are you using? I see that there are 6 SATA ports facing upwards which would face the opening side panel if it were in the case.
From Left to Right, Top to Bottom. SATA Port 3 and 5 are used by M.2 connector if populated.
Once confirmed and see HDD in BIOS, Boot into Windows 10 and go to Computer Manager and in Disk Management, you should be able to see an additional partition or volume.

My MSI Tomahawk did this, when you install a M.2 it disables 2 SATA ports

Asus B550 A Gaming - Old hdd not showing up after installing 2nd m.2 nvme. Resolved by switching sata ports
IWRTRMFN@reddit
If anyone is coming back to this it specifically disabled SATA ports 5 and 6. Ports 1-4 aren't disabled

Thank you so much! Just put a new M.2 in my now somewhat dated B550-F and my D drive had gone off on the wazoo. Looked everywhere. Someone somewhere said that SATA 1 and 5 slots use…whatever they said it was, something something techy. Swapped from 5 to 6 as mine was plugged into 5, and still nothing.
Scrolled more thinking what am I missing, then found your comment. Plugged it into 4 and now it’s back. You sir, are a life saver. Thank you.

Hell yeah dude! Glad I could help

I just switched SATA port and it worked! TY!

Can you please explain how you did this? I’m not a pc expert. I, too have an ASUS PRIME B550 PLUS motherboard and I just installed a new SSD but now my local disk :D is missing. How to retrieve it back?
Nukey717@reddit
The wire you use to connect the local disk is on the sata ports which there should be multiple on your motherboard. Just keep disconnecting and reconnecting to a new one until your drive pops up! Lmk if you figured it out 😱

Well I'm glad it still helps

Wha does a data port look like

If anyone is still struggling after the most popular fixes above (connecting to different SATA ports, changing settings in BIOS, or even the REGEDIT related fixes within windows) it could be that your HDD had only been connected via SATA Data cable ONLY (this means not connected to the PSU through a SATA Power M.2).
I'm not an expert so if any actual computer engineer is out there, please feel free to correct me.
My theory is that (for this whole time I've been using my PC) my HDD had been powered up THROUGH the mobo, that's why it only needed to be connected to a SATA data port. However, when I connected my new SSD, it was maybe too much to handle for the mobo and it stopped getting energy through the mobo. Even after disconnecting (unplugging the new SSD from SATA Data port and from the m.2 PSU cable) it, my HDD wasn't getting detected/recognised.
It took me a while to realise that my HDD was actualy never connected to the PSU, only to the SATA Data port (as I said at the beginning). So the fix for me was to connect the m.2 SATA cable from the PSU to the HDD (+ the already connected SATA port of course) and boom. I powered up my PC and it finally recognised all three storage disks!
Btw, I also had the Seagate Barracuda HDD 1TB. Good luck!

Go to windows search and type "cmd" to get into command prompt.
Type "diskpart" and press enter. (Allow diskpart to run)
The cursor in command prompt (window pops up) will now look like "DISKPART>". Good, this means you are in diskpart.
Now type "list disk" and press enter.
Do you see your disk?
If so type "select disk #" and replace # with the disk number
Now type "clean" and press enter (only if this is a new disk and you don't need the data-it will erase everything). Otherwise take a screenshot, so we can attempt to assign a drive letter to the hdd. I just need the info on the screenshot.
Type exit until you are out of diskpart.
To be sure, restart pc and see if the drive is recognized. If not, let me know and we can fix.

Hi, I'm having a similar issue and I see my HDD in disk part. What do I do if I don't want to clean it?
