Yeah it’s a gamble but they may end up coming out ahead. If out of that 3300 number they lease out 500 or so, they’d have enough leftover in case one’s a dud or they need a part that breaks. Considering they’d also have the rights to the software (from what I read) they may even be able to pay someone to help support that.
That’s assuming the second car is flawless to begin with. What if it’s general manufacturing issue and both cars are expected to fail on the same thing.
i hear you. but in this situation we have 2 new cars, and 1 is a parts donor. recalls aside, you can certainly have a shared issue like both cars have bad window regulators for example, but i think there's an equal or higher likelihood of the cars having different issues throughout ownership; like one might have an electrical issue, and the other a suspension issue, etc
Finding any two anything’s with as many parts as a car with identical flaws is nearly impossible. Yeah, the odds are better in a situation like the Fisker Ocean, but you’d have a better chance of having one good set of parts with two examples than with one.

Worried about your fire sale SUV? Buy two. Just use the parts from the first one. What could go wrong?
There are controllers for EV motors and batteries already on the market. Fun fact the Renault Twizy (a small quadricycle EV) has an 45kmh version that you can drive without a license and a 80kmh version both use the same specs and can have their top speed limiter unlocked and reach 110ish kmh. The only problems are heat and battery drain.
They built a fraction of what they expected, and production was stopped abruptly. Which means that SOMEWHERE, at a bunch of different suppliers or maybe at Magna's plant, there must be a decent supply of spares waiting for someone to pick up and resell
The sale is to a company that provides leases to ride share operators in NYC to help them meet NYC electrician rules.
Nobody is actually buying one of these for $14k.
As long as they open source all their software (unlikely), this would be a fantastic buy for technically inclined people.
The court should force them to release all software and CAD data so that people can fix them somewhat reasonably. Hell, for 14k I would consider one if I could guarantee to mess with all all the software and had some CAD to maybe be able to replace something. I would just pray I never wrecked the thing.
Taxis go through various body panels since they are driven so much. My mate who worked with a small taxi mob said their one car they shared was getting body panels/doors replaced every few months.
and Bobby Boucher's momma said alligators are so ornery because they got all them teeth and no tooth brush
A buddy talking about 1 vehicle just isn't enough to base an assumption on my (hu)man.
Exactly, with no knowledge, no information, you dismissed my knowledge and provided no data. Please don’t tell me you are one of those special people that expects a reviewed and published articles for literally anything lol.
You don't understand Hitchens razor, do you? They could reject your claim without data because you made a claim without data. A data point of one accounts for nothing, it is not a meaningful sample size to make an inference from.
You should apologize to that person.
Hahaha yes I know, but not every claim needs data. If that were true you couldn’t say anything to your friends and family about your work or life u less you provided data for it.
No way am I apologising for providing information lol. They can go and fact check it if they want, or ignore it, but to claim every time you say anything you need data is absurd.
Honestly I couldn’t care about cosmetic damage on a $14K car, but if you crack a headlight lens and can’t get one that may be very annoying, might not pass inspection either lol
Meh. It would be destined to be a rat rod eventually anyway since fixing stuff would be very difficult and expensive. As long as it drove fine, just own the "patina"
Clearly, lol. Yes, there are risks associated with them, but that’s why we have LOTO certification and PPE. I don’t have to be a mechanical engineer to work on hydraulic systems, and those can be just as dangerous. I just need to have proper training and certification.
CAD data is intellectual property that the court will force them to sell for the highest price they can get. They won't want it getting released in a manner that a country with less intellectual property rights could copy.
If I were a car maker I would not want people working on their own EVs. The voltages in those things will kill you. It’s no longer turning a bolt hoping you don’t bust you knuckle. With EVs it’s touch the wrong wire you die.
Hopeful and would be a great outcome but part of the bankruptcy management plan will likely require Fiskar to maximize the value they can extract from the remaining assets which include a portfolio of IP assets. That IP may lose value if they are publicly disclosed (e.g., trade secrets, know how, source code, etc.).
Did not one person bother to read the article?

Messing with the software in a car by tinkerers sounds extremely dangerous.
I think NHTSA would have something to say about making the car's core OS open-source and easily modifiable.
My Friends Ocean was just “totaled” by insurance because they couldn’t source a replacement windshield (it was cracked badly by a large stone). It sat in a body shop for 90 days until he finally threatened legal action and the insurance company stepped in.
Yea, I wouldn’t even pay $3K for one… literally cannot get $hit for these cars…
I know but like, shit like this wasn't even what killed them. But was still a terrible decision, I'm sure that whole car is full of unique parts. They're not selling to ferrari buyers, they're selling to the luxury daily driver market which just won't put up with that kind of inconvenience
^ This. I work in automotive repair and yea, basically all glass is unique to the vehicle unless it’s a shared chassis I.e. Pontiac vibe & Toyota Matrix.
Because that's the norm for all cars. They all use a unique windshield per model. The only time they really share parts like a windshield is when they are sold under multiple brands, such as GMC and Chevy trucks.
Except for the sketchy buy here pay here lots, pretty much every reputable used car dealer offer a 1 month 1000 mile warranty, but it's extremely limited. Basically just saying "if it 100% tanks we'll cover it, otherwise get fucked byeeee"
I've seen a few Oceans driving around lately and I wonder what the owners are thinking, now that their car's company is out of business and there likely won't be much repair support. Maybe some of them are completely oblivious
I've seen a few around where I live over the last year and I always wonder what number of them were bought full price. I know a couple were as they showed up at release. Wonder how those people feel
I went to a regional car show in March and someone had brought their Ocean, just two weeks old. Spent quite a bit of time talking with the owner. Not knowing what was on the immediate horizon for Fisker, our chat was very positive and we spoke about how Fisker is back and doing it right this time. The fit and finish is nice, and if the company were well-funded and solvent, these definitely would have had a place on US roads. But just a couple of months later my conversation with the Ocean owner would come back to haunt me, realizing that he had lost his "investment", and I use that term loosely because 99% of cars are a liability/cost. I didn't realize at the time how much risk was involved with buying Fisker. These were priced too high, but price aside, I think the Ocean is a fairly attractive EV package.
I shouldn’t be laughing because it’s a terrible reality for the drivers but I just looked at their general chat and someone said “how in the world can we get help for our vehicles??” And someone responded “we can’t 😢”
mechanically it may be good deal but ev's rely a lot on softwares and their constant updates.. idk if this is worth buying or not, it's a phone with no support
So they are all going to go to a company that rents them out to Uber drivers in NYC?
Honestly pretty dope. I'm here for the Fisker Ocean becoming the next taxi of New York
