Would be great if all new iPhone models will have 120hz screens. Even budget android phones have 120hz screen. It's just not acceptable to ofer 60 screen for that price.
hackenclaw@reddit
If Apple really wanna segment the phones, even 90Hz for the base model is better than 60Hz. NO reason to stick to 60Hz these days.
Savings-Awareness-73@reddit
Better battery life is a reason
Weak_Natural477@reddit
My S23 Ultra have 120hz and the battery life is crazy good. Next...
Savings-Awareness-73@reddit
Ye but I just wanna try out iPhone 16 pro max and I already have note 10 plus and z flip 3.
Sarin10@reddit
huh? just allow the user to toggle it. it's their choice.
Cory123125@reddit
Thats because they do price segmentation in different ways.
Apple for instance, has stellar soc performance in all their devices, whereas a cheap android phone will have much more dodgy performance by comparison.
For instance even looking at Samsungs flagships, the S24 has 2/3rds the ram of the other models.
Thats going to have a notable imapct.
With Iphones, you'd be hard pressed to find a real world performance difference in that regard.
As a result, just about the only separation is the cameras (which all brands do), and the screens, which is what they pick.
Im not saying I like it, Im just saying I see why they do it.
996forever@reddit
Is that not…the same way as iPhones? For 15 and 14 it’s 3/4, but for the 13 it is 2/3 and it is a pretty big impact.
Cory123125@reddit
Fair enough point about the older ones.
996forever@reddit
Soc performance being strong does not prevent bottlenecks emerging from elsewhere from the system. My mother’s shitty Galaxy A51 (truly dogshit exynos Soc in every way) has enough ram to keep all her tabs open on chrome without having to reload even after using the camera. My iPhone 13 could never, ever hope to do the same and even just switching between discord and safari constantly result in the formed being reopened and the latter refreshed.
IncredulousTrout@reddit
Tab reloading on iPhone is the bane of my existence. Probably not switching to Android, but it's so annoying that you can never predict when a tab is gonna disappear into the ether.
996forever@reddit
Typing a long comment on safari and wanna switch to another to look at information, come back and bam, it force refreshers and everything you typed is gone.
IncredulousTrout@reddit
It just works
crossedreality@reddit
It's not apples to apples. The budget Android phones have garbage screens. Cranking up the refresh rate doesn't make them look like less garbage.
That said - yes, every iPhone should have 120hz at this point, and I have no idea why Apple thinks it's a useful "pro" feature, especially since it's mostly not noticeable.
Trrru@reddit
These days $300, sometimes ~$200 androids have AMOLED screens. Peak brightness is also similar to iphones.
Skitzo_Ramblins@reddit
The panels are much worse though
W0LFSTEN@reddit
The difference between 60hz and 120hz is extremely noticeable, if you have healthy eyes.
crossedreality@reddit
It’s not a selling feature to consumers. They do not care.
W0LFSTEN@reddit
But it is a selling feature to consumers. That is why they implemented it. And that is why they segmented it.
Skitzo_Ramblins@reddit
the software is also a mess where you rarely end up seeing 120hz but rather 80ish hz when scrolling, but because it's VRR it's still much nicer than 60hz. it's so stupid if you hold the volume up buttons it locks the display at 120hz because apparently that animation needs to be 120hz, but not scrolling.
TwelveSilverSwords@reddit (OP)
This would be a departure from the current system, where the Pro models have the newest chip, while the base models have last year's chip.
The stratification began with the iPhone 13 series. Until then, all the iPhones of the same series used the exact same chip. But in the iPhone 13 series, the Pro models got a bin with more GPU cores.
12/12 Mini/12 Pro/12 Pro Max - A14 Bionic.
13/13 Mini - A15 Bionic 4-core GPU.
13 Pro/13 Pro Max - A15 Bionic 5-core GPU.
14/14 Plus - A15 Bionic 5-core GPU.
14 Pro /14 Pro Max - A16 Bionic.
15/15 Plus - A16 Bionic 15 Pro /15 Pro Max - A17 Pro.
So going by this, you would expect the iPhone 16/16 Plus to get the A17, and the iPhone 16 Pro/16 Pro Max to get the A18.
But if the above leak is true, this won't be happening. There is a good reason we can guess why. The A17 chip is made on the N3B node, which has a few problems. The A18 will be made on N3E, which has better power, performance, cost-effectiveness and yields.
It's still unclear whether all four iPhone 16 series models will get an identical A18 chip. I'd hazard a guess that the iPhone 16/16 Pro Max gets the "A18 Pro", while the 16/16 Plus get the "A18", which would be from the same die but binned to have less GPU, CPU or Neural Engine cores.
memory_stick@reddit
Most likely also a meassure to ensure enough NPU performance across the new generation for exclusive features wihin Apple Inteligence
Vince789@reddit
Apple Intelligence doesn't have that high NPU perf requirement, even the old M1's NPU is enough (RAM is the limiting factor for older/current iPhones)
It's just Apple wanting to move on from the A17's poor yields due to N3B
Hence it will be A18 & A18 Pro
medquestion80@reddit
I think this is most likely the correct answer on why they moved everything to the A18. N3B was a lot more expensive than N3E.
memory_stick@reddit
Hence I wrote "new exclusive feutures". It enables them to define a new baseline (if they're willing to) for future AI features. The N3E vs N3B angle for sure applies as well, I merely wanted to provide another possible reason
justformygoodiphone@reddit
Exactly this
And
This not a “departure from normal” as OP makes it sound like. All phones getting the exact same chip has been the normal, separation of chip is a recent thing.
Berzerker7@reddit
He said a departure from the "current" system, not normal.
Hendeith@reddit
Mainly this. We already know AI will be a big marketing point this gen, Apple will want to make sure all new iPhones are capable so they have to outfit them with A18
Witty_Afternoon2785@reddit
When i saw this rumors i remembered a news leakers which he later deleted his post mentioning iPhone will have two performance variants; one with 8400 multicore score and the second one is 9300 multicore score. So we might have A18 and A18 pro, if this is true then 9300 is insane, even A17 pro has 7200 multicore score, when i did some research i found that A18 pro has the potential to reach 9300. Here are the infos i found that iPhone 16 pro max will get and 15 pro max don’t have that might actually improve its performance: - New Ram LPPDR5x( improves power and efficiency) - New cooling system( iPhones needed this for years) - new and enhanced 3 nano chip( the one in 15 pro didn’t have the perks of a real 3 nano chip) - 3 nano chip power efficiency( means apple can improve the power performance without iPhone throttles)
- bigger iPhone( means better heat dissipation) - new display probably from samsung( better efficiency)
game mode from ios A18 is insane, all iphone will get it but i thought it’s worth mentioning since it gives between 3-10+ fps when playing AAA games on 15 pro max which is huge.
If A18 pro doesn’t exceed 9000 i’m gonna be very disappointed.
MissionInfluence123@reddit
I wouldn't be surprised if this change is just for this year due to TSMC getting rid of N3B and the necessity of a bigger more capable NE.
N2 will be quite expensive and would take some time to reach good enough yields for 100M iPhones 17s...
Famous_Wolverine3203@reddit
My guess is one less GPU core and one less P cores. Similar to M series.
SkylessRocket@reddit
iPhones have had 2 P cores and 4 E cores for a long time across their range. The bin is not going to have 1 less P core.
Famous_Wolverine3203@reddit
In hindsight, you’re right. It is extremely unlikely for apple to drop to 1P core. Looking at the M4, I’m assuming the A18 pro will have 2P+6E. I’m assuming the base A18 will have 4E cores.
SkylessRocket@reddit
Nah it’s going to be a GPU/NPU bin (probably GPU again given the focus on AI). The die space taken by 2 E cores is too small to be worth binning.
TwelveSilverSwords@reddit (OP)
Yeah. An E-core takes up about 1/4 the area of a P-core, while delivering 1/3 of the MT performance.
TwelveSilverSwords@reddit (OP)
Could be: A18 Pro: 2P+6E.
A18 : 2P+4E.

Has anyone here actually been excited with the new features of any new phone they've gotten recently? I can't help but just hate everything about mobile.
The anti consumer feature removals/lockdown, the lack of control over your own devices, the mandated spyware, the lack of security with things like pegasus being on the loose and potentially not fixed, the fact we're basically forced to use them in the modern world.
Like, I hate the process of buying a phone. I just pick the thing that fucks me the least and wont piss me off in usage and dread needing to pick another phone in 2-3 years time as every time Ive replaced a battery, the replacement has been of low quality, even when I've done backflips to find good sources, and then you lose water proofing etc.
Basically, my phone is throttling and it doesnt last long because the battery is trash? The updates have downgraded the experience such that the things I do have any notable amount of lag? I guess its upgrade time.... Theres the latest mid tier s series, lets see how they've fucked me over this time! Ah, now there is no headphone jack. Ah, now call recording doesnt work right. Ah, now the terms of service are even more invasive. Ah, now loading a custom rom breaks all sorts of banking etc.
Everytime a new downgrade and new features I do not care about remotely compared to what has been taken, but hey, now its has an ltpo 120hz display so... coool... I guess......
00x0xx@reddit
I like being part or the apple eco-system, and usb-c is preferable. I'm due for a phone upgrade since late last year, but I've been waiting for this USB-C phone. Also the bigger screen size is interesting, I generally buy the smallest iphone, but I might opt for the largest size, because it will replace both my iphone SE(2) & Ipad mini.
Cory123125@reddit
To me, the fact they just unilaterally for instance can decide headphone jacks dont exist, or that you cant use your completely legal right to do one party consent phone call recording, or that you have to repair the way they tell you to, or any number of artificially created issues, is absurd to me.
There isnt really much choice, and to me its a game of picking the least shitty one since you cant survive without a smartphone in the modern day.
Right now I have an S24+, but if I could get a phone that didnt do all this bs, you betcha I'd be excited.
As for the Apple eco-system, my problem is that it's pretty severe lock in, designed to make other connections tedious by comparison and restricting developers from accessing the apis Apple gets to access, often completely destroying other companies (like tile for instance). That type of thing, is a huge problem, and if anti trust laws were working they would be forced to be more open. Previously our only hope was the EU forcing Apple to not be shitty, but Apple realized that they value shittiness so much, they will literally make seperate versions for the EU rather than curtail their behaviour.
I mean I get some of the end user smoothness of use, but ultimately Apple tells you what you can and cant do with your phone, and thats absurd do me. Its like, did I or did I not just give you money for this device?
00x0xx@reddit
Having too many options and trying to appease everyone will always lead to a chaotic situation which is a frustrating experience for those hoping for a easy to understand, streamline experience of using a computer system.
Apple from it's very foundation was design to be close system with a single vision for usability that was contrast to IBM & Microsoft version of trying to built a system that's compability, or usabilty with everyone and everything.
Apple users that fully adopted it's eco-system does so for this exact reason, that's it's not a chaotic device, or experience to use. And these users are more than happy to pay a premium for this.
Buy what you like, no one is forcing you to use apple device, and their consistently limited capibilities when compared to their competition. Those that do, like me, fully understand that some of apple decisions are dumb. But the majority of the time they get it right, and right enough to make it worthwhile to continue using their products.
And there is nothing stoping you from being part of both ecosystems either. You're not restricted to just using apple, or samsung, or microsoft products. At the end of the day, these are just tools for either work, or for your pleasure.
Cory123125@reddit
I just dont buy this argument. The features that are limited dont confuse anyone, They add confusion, and remove utility.
The only argument in favour of reducing choice is cost cutting in software, but smartphones are so ubiquitous that the software is a small cost so its not a good argument there.
The right answer therefore is sane defaults, but decent customizability.
Just for an example, considering that a majority of sections of western countries have first party consent laws, or even 2 party consent laws, why is call recording blocked? It took them extra effort to do and could only be for nefarious reasons.
Why is the headphone jack gone, while all laptops, pcs and even game controllers continue to have them? Because they wanted higher headphone sales.
Why are repairs part limited with all sorts of restrictions? I dont even think I need to answer that one.
These arent options that confuse anyone.
Lets assume you are just talking about software though, do you have any examples that fall in line with what Im saying where sane defaults but options available actually cause confusion?
Yet what does Iphone do? They slowly adopt the customizability that android has had for years.
Some say this is because they want to make sure it works correctly, but this certainly isnt always the case. A great recent example is with the color shaded applications. Those arent pretty to look at and seem like half baked functionality. Does it hurt? Not really, just dont use it.
Apple tries to sell their limited scope of options as a feature, but have even shown themselves, that users do value options, and that even when an option isnt necessarily used by the masses it doesnt harm anyone being added.
I think you totally missed my point here. They are converging and all have anti features. There is not enough choice for the consumer because there is not enough choice for operating systems. Various anti consumer or anti competitive practices are employed that make mobile oses painful vs desktop oses.
This is the problem. I am forced to use android or ios. I am forced to be locked down, as custom roms have been neutered with the breaking of security features for reasons of "security" For windows, if I want to game, Im forced to use windows (with many asterisks, yes I know), but windows doesnt have half the problems mobile oses have, and I am comfortable with linux anyways so thats why Im not here complaining about desktop oses as there is less to complain about there.
Let me summarize then:
Apple and Google should be forced to allow app developers to have access to any API's that they themselves use to create unique software experiences.
Apple and Google should be forced to allow the user to use their hardware how they want without putting up artificial barriers to reasonable functionality.
Apple in particular should be forced to allow the sideloading of apps by non developers (luckily the EU has ruled in favour of this, but unfortunately many other regions lag behind severely when it comes to consumer rights).
These are the problems, and this is why there is no actual choice. They are fundamental and pervasive no matter what phone you pick currently. 2 options means very little choice.
00x0xx@reddit
Apple have always done this. It's not just that they've tried, this has been the cornerstone of their marketing since forty years ago. They have never once attempted to be more open, and all the people who buy their products loved them for this.
To participate in society I agree. However this is not apple's fault. They didn't conspire with android to make this happen. All they did, along with android was design a product that people wanted to buy over their competition, and end up being one of the dominant players.
There is nothing stopping a competitor from existing and competing with apple. Microsoft and Blackberry both had phone OS that competes with both android and iOS, and not enough people wanted them.
Microsoft phone OS was considered to be better than android and iOS by alot of critical reviewers and many users that used it, but Microsoft didn't sell enough to justify keeping the business alive. Most users either prefer the locked garden that was iOS or the total freedom andriod offered.
AFAIK you can do so on android, as long as it doesn't compromise security for the user. Obviously apple doesn't allow this to as near an extend, but again, this is why people buy apple, for this predictable experience that only exist because developers are limited in what they can do in iOS.
All industries end up with a few businesses that become stable establishments in the end. This is just a reality of how business grow, compete, mature and succeed. If they become a monopoly, it’s up to the nation and its laws to enforce change to this monopoly. But if they aren’t, they aren’t doing anything wrong.
And I don’t see what apple is doing wrong and keeping it’s locked garden for it’s users that like this sort of enclosed well organized place.
Cory123125@reddit
The limited scope isn't what their customers love, its the decent experience. From a consumer perspective there isn't a direct positive to draw from it.
The green bubbles disagrees with that.
There is sooooooo much stopping a competitor from existing. Just the hardware blockade alone makes starting a smartphone OS that isnt one of the big 2 basically impossible.
If you try just getting the necessary information for implementation of thenecessary hardware, modems from QUALCOMM, SOCs, etc non of that is remotely public. Like if you even try finding an SOC, not even phone related, they wont even let you through the front door docs wise. You get a pretty minimal datasheet, and thats it. Thats before you even get into minimum order quantity sizes that you cant play with.
That is to say, you dont need millions, but billions to even attempt something fresh from the ground up, and both android and ios depend on their moat of an impossibly high barrier to entry to start. Then, even further than this, you now have to deal with a lack of app support.
This is ... not true. To put it differently, google has some really convenient definitions of "security for the user".
Just like Apple, they rely on not giving access to all of the phones features to developers so that they can have an insurmountable moat to create and destroy developers at will. They have the play store which is a barrier to any amount of reasonable financial success, they have special access to the os so they can do things like for instance, record phone calls, that magically they feel developers shouldnt be able to have access to anymore (this has asterisks but is correct enough to stop there), and they have access to crazy akmounts of user data that the users is forced to give away due to the lack of options and the non functionality of custom roms with necessary daily life activities (like banking etc).
I just do not think this argument has been remotely substantiated. Its something they like to say to avoid the looming anti trust lawsuits and what they try to say to argue against EU legislation, but it seems like competent governments are seeing through this thin veil of bs.
Due to capitalism, but that means that they need to be regulated, as I recommended.
Currently these companies have nearly free rein to do whatever they want because politicians are bought and too old to understand the implications of ... many things.
Anti trust laws dont require absolute monopolies. Heck, monopoly laws dont even require it. Its a common misconception and no clearer can this be seen than with Microsofts huge fine in the early 2000s when they certainly did not have a 100% monopoly and something like I believe 85% at the time. Android is at roughly the mid 70s.
The point is, there is no reason not to regulate these companies heavily.
This is a legality = morality argument which is inevitably circular. It inherently shuts down any conversation discussing changes to legality by saying that its moral because its legal, and therefore cannot be immoral.
Once again, thats what Apple says, but not a tear was shed when they were forced to adopt USB-C. Not a tear was shed when they were forced to allow other payment methods and the sideloading of apps in the EU.
People want choice. They just have limited options, and they are more than happy to accept choice when the government forces apple to make it available.
aelder@reddit
I was pretty stoked when Apple added ProRes 422, LOG color and recording to external storage.
Now I have an awesome very portable camera that I can color match instantly with my Sony cinema camera.
Favorite phone I've ever had, what I get out of it blows my mind.

Fair point. I will say that for camera folks I can definitely imagine some being pleased about this and I had just assumed most would prefer their own DSLRs etc.

Bring back the Mini
Signed, a person with small hands =(
00x0xx@reddit
Apple lost money selling the mini, that's why they stop selling it. It's too expensive to set up a manufacturing base just for 1 phone type. But it appears they plan on keeping the SE as small as possible, while still using the last generations of manufacturing tools, which makes production cost cheap.
IMHO, the only strategy apple could have used to satisfy us users who like small phone was to make a specific model phone that was both cheap, and small. This way they profit from sales from selling both to customers who want small phones, and customers that want cheap phones.
Slyons89@reddit
I thought that was the minis whole thing, it was small and it was $100 cheaper than the regular iphone model, so it was their entry level phone.
00x0xx@reddit
No. The minis' were small, but had similar hardware to their bigger phones. So they were expensive to make. Apple's cheapest phone, which they start making before the minis, and still today is the iphone SE line. You can usually buy it for 50% less than a regular iphone, of the same model year.
SE's use manufacturing and extra parts from the last generation of iphones, that's why apple can sell it for 50% less and still make a profit. It's alot of parts and machines that would have been thrown away to make space for the newer generation, that instead gets used to build newer versions of the 'old' phone.
dawarium@reddit
Fingers crossed for 16 mini
TwelveSilverSwords@reddit (OP)
Not gonna happen :(
Stingray88@reddit
The last time people told me another mini wasn’t going to happen, I gave up hope and bought my wife a full size iPad that she hated. 6 months later we got the iPad Mini 5th gen that she loves.
Obviously I wouldn’t count on an iPhone 16 Mini happening… but I wouldn’t count on it not either.
00x0xx@reddit
Ipad mini sales is good even if its less than the bigger ipads, so apple will keep making it, because they still profit from it's sales. Apple never profit from either of the iphone mini.
That's why there was only 2 generations of the iphone. iphone mini is a lost cause for apple.
But iphone SE is very popular, and buyers feedback is becuase of it's smaller size compared to mainstream iphone. So I think apple will keep the iphone SE small, although not as small as the mini.
Lyonado@reddit
Okay, I hear you, but hear me out, it sounds like you just need to go buy something to make it happen again. Take one for the team
