Dental holidays, yay or nay?

As a kid i never went to the dentist enough as my mum was scared and... what kid is going to volunteer themselves for a trip to the dentist. As an adult, either a lack of finances, or a lack of dentists has limited my ability to make an appointment. We are in a better position financially and I've lost one tooth too many. I am now considering dental implants, a full top set and a full bottom set. Costs in the UK the last time i looked (a few years ago) were 20-30k for both sets. Way out of my price range. My wife had one single tooth that was bad and got an individual implant but i have too many in bad shape that i would ultimately end up doing them all at a higher cost in the future. Has anyone gone abroad for implants before? Full sets preferably. The british dentists try to warn you away from abroad, but we have the reputation for bad teeth so i can take that with a pinch of salt. Does anyone have an idea of costs now? A quick google sent me.to sites where i had to input information and i dont want the sales pitch.

We actually don't have bad teeth. The dental index ranks us higher than the US in terms of dental health. Don't go abroad. Get it done here. If anything goes wrong it's easier to fix

My implants (full lower) were installed in 1995. They are still in perfect shape. IThey were installed by a super skilled oral surgeon.). I was seeing him already because the endodontist working on a root canal botched it so bad that I had to get my whole lower jaw on the affected side replaced. I would research dental practitioners. Friend that had their implants installed by regular dentists have all had a lot of trouble.

There nothing intrinsically wrong about going abroad, Turkish, polish or Bulgarian dentists aren’t inherently worse than ours. The problem is finding reliable and accredited ones. My suggestion would be narrow down some countries and perhaps post this question in the respective subreddits? Half of Poland aren’t suffering from serious dental problems thanks to botched work, it’s just a case of doing the due diligence

You’re right though that the variation in quality you’ll find abroad is the main concern. There are some exceptional dentists in those countries who’ll do as good a job as you’d get anywhere here, and then there are some who wouldn’t be allowed to practice here. How confident are you in telling which is which, particularly if you don’t speak the language?

There’s nothing wrong with going abroad. It takes careful research and planning though. I’be used dentists in Thailand and India. I stick with big private dental hospitals. It’s more expensive but then the random dental practises but I have the assurance that they’re fully qualified and that they aren’t cutting corners. The facilities at these hospitals/large clinics are world class and far better than the out dated equipment and methods your local dentist probably uses. I usually see a dentist in the UK to get a ‘quote’ of the work needed and then use this when I travel for holiday to have it done abroad. Research is key. Check reviews, accreditation, names etc. Always get a quote and ask questions. I had done work done in Thailand a few weeks ago at Thantakit International Dental Centre Bangkok. It cost me 7500baht (£170) I was quoted £1200 by my dentist in the UK. Even with works dental insurance plan it would have cost me £600. The dentist who did the work had Masters in Prosthodontics from University College London most of the staff there had done all or part training in either the UK,Europe, or the US. Spoke English perfectly and the clinic was spotless.

If (and often when) the cheap implants fail, if they are not the system they mostly use in the UK (Straumann), no implantologist or dentist will go near it. There is a reason it's more expensive here, they cover their asses to try and fix any problems if any arise (with the patient behaving themselves and following instruction). I've seen and helped treat many who are off to Poland/ Hungary or elsewhere to have their teeth done and it's 50 50 perfectly ok to worse. Seen some appalling failed/ unfinished root canal treatment and questionable fillings and crowns. Also seen some amazing metal fillings from Japan which were stunning

I've had loads of friends and co-workers go abroad for dental procedures. Nothing has ever gone wrong for them and not gonna lie their teeth look good now lol. Just do your research and make an informed decision.
