My mom refused to waste money on “overpriced mush with overly sugared glop.” When she could make essentially the same thing, only better at home. She was right. Her homemade oatmeal was way better. Not mushy like instant oatmeal. And she would stir in a spoonful of fruit preserves and it was ten times better than the store bought stuff.

Let me tell you why I couldn't finish a bowl of this stuff. Y'all may be familiar with the classic movie The Golden Child. I was obsessed with it as a kid. There's a scene in the beginning where Detective Jerrell finds a bowl of oatmeal with blood in it that was being force-fed to a child. Every time I squirted that packet of red goo into the oatmeal it looked just like it. I'd eat a bite and feel nauseous. Ruined the experience.
