What does XMP mean in bios setting
Posted by Louis012345@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 29 comments
So my understanding of XMP in the bios means that it manually overclocks your cpu and your ram to a stable range I have a Ryzen 5 2600X and I’m using the stock cooler and I have Corsair vengeance 3000 ram (LPX) and motherboard msi x370 gaming plus so if I turn on XMP it does a manual overclock on my ram and cpu right? That my system knows it can run fine without any problems? Please help

XMP overclocks your RAM only using a profile that your memory is rated to support. It means Extreme Memory Profile.

So, basically the RAM runs at the speed it is advertised at (instead of underclocked to the standard). I've always found the name "Extreme" in this hilarious.

Just here to keep the thread going.
I was searching to find the difference between XMP and EXPO. EXPO seems to be AMD so I assumed XMP was intel but I'm still nonethewiser.
Thanks Google!

Intel created XMP but is used by most memory manufacturers now. EXPO is a very similar tech created by AMD.

What’s the point of having two if it works on either? Does one have an advantage that the other doesn’t and vice versa?
RedlurkingFir@reddit
I'm guessing it's just patent law or something.
Low-Nefariousness-34@reddit
It's extreme because it's typically over and above what your cpu would support. Such as an intel 265k supporting 6400mts. But if your eam and motherboard support xmp with the higher ram speed say 8000mts. Then you would see it that speed with xmp on...
That's why it's extreme.

XMP is an overclocking profile for ram. DDR4 ram runs at 2133mhz, any speed above that is technically an overclock. The xmp profile sets ram timings and speed stored by the motherboard.
DeputySparkles@reddit
Mine runs 3200 default in the BIOS, how is it technically an overlock if that’s the default? Just curious

Alright so I’ve been running 4x16 sticks of 6000mhz DDR5 at 3600 MT/s for over a year. Im new to PC building and just enabled my XMP Profile and it’s at 5600 MT/s now. I gimped myself all this time by not enabling the profile?!

Soo I enabled XMP and it made it forget my OS boot drive. Went to recovery window. Turned XMP back off then it worked again.

Xmp is a total piece of S. It was turned on for my pc and had constant bsod. Turned it off and all issues disappeared. Anything to do with overclocking is a pos, don’t do it. The problems far far outweigh the benefits
Calm-Wheel-8202@reddit
spent better part of a day trying to find why my pc crashed every 5 minutes and browsers would just close by themselves, i turned xmp from 2 to 1, then to 2 again and it wont let me use it at all, had to turn it all off for the pc to work.
MagicPistol@reddit
Be careful using XMP with Ryzen. My Gskill 3000 ram worked fine with XMP on my old Core i5, but my PC wouldn't boot when I tried XMP after my 2600X upgrade. I had to manually set the ram speed to 2933. Ryzen is really picky with ram.
