The rival group across town is led by an strong female leader of mature years. The town doctor is gay. **It's the writing, not the diversity of the characters or the casting.** In the episodes I've seen the sheriff's race is never discussed, nor is the female leader's gender and age, nor the sexual orientation of the town doctor. They're just **people** in a tough situation trying to work together and survive as best they can. If the writers spent most of the story talking about the sheriff struggling against racism to lead his town, the rival female leader overcoming sexism and ageism to lead her group, or the town doctor struggling against homophobia to treat the sick, I would lose interest unless I was also a member of that marginalized group - and even then, not sure I **always** want stories about discrimination.
