Mic volume EXTREMELY low even at 100%
Posted by datmemeyouhateDUH@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 179 comments
Built a new PC yada yada, updated all the drivers, installed windows update, on latest BIOS, but even at 100% volume mic is still quiet.
This seems like a common issue but none of the solutions are really working, any ideas for how to increase volume? Like maybe apps I could route my signal through without it getting really staticky?
If it helps, I have a razer blackshark V2 X

WHERE IS THE VID
Some_Derpy_Pineapple@reddit
equalizerAPO, add gain until your speaking volume goes to the yellow bar in something like the OBS volume meter
CoolMarionberry8349@reddit
for some reason equalizer doesn't let me select my mic so i can't use it. it seems to be the only fix
Less-Dingo111@reddit
where is the OBS volume meter
Some_Derpy_Pineapple@reddit
Can't post images directly but if you look up OBS Studio images it's the green/yellow/red meters in the audio mixer part of the UI

my mic crashes
StratoNaught@reddit
It also worked with my audio interface, the problem is the volume slider doesn't do anything in Win 11 so I have to decrease it through the physical knob of the mic volume in the interface, the problem is, now I can't monitor the sounds coming from the mic because the mic's input is reduced to 25% on the physical knob. The solution is using a separate Device Control for my mic and then adding pre-amp to control the volume, now I can freely set the physical knob to whatever level I can hear though the headphones without clipping.

Hello, I am on a DELL Laptop 7440. I am currently have a problem on my mic. It is 100% but the output is so low like 1%. Can anyone help me?
More-Profession-1419@reddit
hey did u find a fix?
Valuable-Laugh-2486@reddit
Tried a bunch of things, including all the stuff on here, and the one that wound up working for me was this:
Settings > System > Sound > Input > [target mic here] > Audio Enhancements > Off
The device defaults were absolutely screwing with it.
New-Chimera@reddit
I don't even have that as an option
Avenged_Vulcan@reddit
Same here.
New-Chimera@reddit
So I ended up solving it but not through the proper channels. No matter what I did it no matter what Reddit thread I went down and no matter how I tried to tackle it, my headset did not sound loud through my microphone to the people listening. On Black Friday I bought a $50 ($100 normally) stand-alone microphone that a lot of streamers use and it took a minute to set up and all of the problems is gone. Never really figured it out.
More-Profession-1419@reddit
I litteraly just bought a 100 dollar microphone cuz my old one was having this issue and I thought something was wrong with it. When i use my new mic on my Ipad, its volume is perfect but on my PC im having the same issue as before with the audio being really low. I tried ur tip for audio enhancements and it didnt work
catkaratet@reddit
THANK YOUUU this worked for me after years of having mic issues
dedimerdeka@reddit
thank you, this worked for me, it was set 29%, but my question now how the frick it changed on its own, it was fine before!!!!!!
Avenged_Vulcan@reddit
In sounds > more sound settings > recording > right click on mic & properties > advanced > "allow applications to take exclusive control of this device".
No guarantee that's what changed it but it might be.
Clear_Treat6215@reddit
worked for me thank you, look on the right side of your screen guys you should see a additional device properties button
NoBee3911@reddit
this was my issue; windows set my mic's default to 0...
Overall_Struggle6383@reddit
what worked for me is I updated which made it worse and stopped working overall, but I rollbacked and it worked, much better and louder.
estufa88@reddit
SOLVED! I have an Asus mobo with onboard Realtek audio device and had a super low audio from mic.
Solved it by opening Realtek Audio Console (Windows start menu), Mic section and enabling Conference Mode.
Hurraaay, Now it has background noise but I can adjust the volume normally.
I don't know if it is boosting the mic or disabling some kind of noise reduction super-feature, but it works now!
gcjri@reddit
my mic WORKS but its not even an option in realtek audio console? the console only shows an option for my output, not input. im using a hyperx headset. how do i get my input to actually show up in realtek audio console
SZlade@reddit
hey, you ever figure this out?

OK, I was having this problem, I tried the suggestions here and they didn't work. What finally did work for me was installing audio drivers from my computer manufacturer's website (MSI) instead of using the default Windows drivers. I think the Windows drivers must just be trash, but I googled "MSI audio drivers," went to their site, followed the instructions, and now my mic is working fine.
JustADude_D@reddit

oGhosti@reddit
Same. I'm literally gonna crash out. I had to fix audio issues last night and then my friend said "Wow you're way louder and more clear now!" - then I put the PC into lock mode and go to sleep just to wake up for it to be reset in some shitty way where it picks up 13-16% volume and it barely picks me up on discord. Also my actual headset audio in games and other applications is quieter/less quality now too. I'm using an Astro A50 but this shit happened on my other headsets too. It's going to be the death of me and I'm so tired of this.

which is the correct way? the one with little microphone symbol pointing towards me or opposite of me? im nto sure cuz its like twisting hard to the opposite way but it picks up more osund but with the micrphone symbol towards me its twisting more freely i think but it gets lower volume. ALSO can i break the mic by twisting it oo much or the components in it are made for that?
VeroJade@reddit
Look at the user manual. It'll show you the direction.
Farzout@reddit
what do you mean the wrong way, what is the right way or wrong way? I'm on laptop
BoostedWRBwrx@reddit
Microphones are directional. If you have a headset with a mic, sometimes they can be rotated to face the wrong direction so your voice is not actually projecting into the microphone but the back of it. It'll pick up the sounds slightly but it won't sound like it should.

rdawg505@reddit

i have arctis nova pro wireless and have had issues with both steel series sonar software and default microphone option. Both use the mic on the headset but extremely low output volume.
What I did to improve this issue was use Settings > system > sound > Input - default microphone > turn off "voice focus" (which when enabled reduces background noise)
this about doubled my mic volume. Major downside is you can hear my keyboard more. Needs to be swapped with a
such a ridiculous problem that took a lot of recording and setting changes to see what worked best.
NukaQuantum1111@reddit
I went to recording settings in sound properties. Then incresed microphone boost to 30 decibels, with input volume at 75%. Now my voice sounds louder and more clear. Still muffled, but that could be my $50 Razer Blackshark V2 X headset.

Hello, the worst thing has happened to me. After 1 month without knowing what happened he found a solution. Honestly, I don't know if it's my 3-cent microphone or if something has been misconfigured. What I did was that in the Realtek audio console I went to the microphone section and raised the power to 20. This makes you have a small background sound, but in Discord with activating noise suppression it no longer sounds. Although the sound is almost undetectable

HEY in case you're still reading this, I had the same issue trying to use this mic with my Lenovo Thinkbook. I did solve the issue with these 3 steps. I am NOT a tech girl by any means so maybe some of these things are obvious:
1) I went to my laptop manufacturer's website (Lenovo) and downloaded the latest audio driver. It made a huge difference for this mic...BUT it didn't totally solve my issue. Recording was still a bit quiet SO...
2) Went to WINDOWS ->SETTINGS -> SYSTEM -> SOUND->INPUT->DEVICE PROPERTIES and boosted the volume up to about 82. The default on Windows for the mic is 48. Boosting the volume to 100 redlined me right away so there is a bit of fiddling required to get the right volume without distortion. I have the mic set to -12db (using the RODE central app) with a volume of 82 on the computer.
**At this point I felt like the mic was a lot louder, but I was only getting a mono recording and the audio playback was only coming out of one of my computer speakers. SO...
3) I went into the RODE CENTRAL program and I actually put the mic into MERGED MODE with the safety channel ON. Rode recommends this setting only when using two mics for some reason, but the moment I put it into merged and safety channel on, it was suddenly giving me a stereo playback that sounded a lot better. I don't know why this worked tbh.
These three steps together saved this mic for me. It is recording great now. Maybe this will help you too!

A potential fix is going into sound control panel, recording, then microphone properties on the razer usb sound card mic, then Advanced and allowing audio enhancements under signal enhancements.
I actually toggled it on and off a few times because it seemed to not apply right away, but after about 30 seconds or so my mic sound would jump up significantly. But ever since it seems that my mic has been okay and actually useable now.
quicklilbunny@reddit
these instructions helped me to find the reason why my mic was always so quiet. bless.
