The word "gotten", is it taught in schools?

Like it or not, "gotten" seems to have become quite common now. Is the word taught in schools? If a pupil in an English lesson uses it in a essay, would the teacher say that's incorrect and change it to "got"? I realise the teacher might use "gotten" themselves and regard it as correct. Yes there's the set phrase "ill gotten gains" and the word "forgotten", before anyone mentions them.
