Clif Bar factory in Twin Falls, Idaho has you back up with your doors closed. They break the seal and close you up when they’re done. They also give you some Clif bars when you’re done. I loved going there.

This particular picture is not a picture of a door closed place, but they generally are set up with more size specifically to accommodate opening doors. Usually the floor is lower a bit and there's space for the doors to open 90° or more though some make be significantly lower or allow the doors to open more. You don't usually see it with dry warehouses, but I go to a couple of cold warhouses that do it like this.

here in the Netherlands i do a lot of refrigerated driving and a decent amount of companies for refrigerated stuff have docks where you can open the doors inside. i dont get to benefit from that tho since i have roll doors and a seal isnt required here besides for out of Eurozone transport(TIR)
View on Reddit #29033724

In Canada a seal is only required for ferry crossings, or for US-bound/originating shipments, and (IIRC) food. But most companies require them for load integrity.

ah, it would make more sense since its multiple days away most times but in the Netherlands most freight is in the trailer for at most 24 hours besides the fact that we combine a lot of freights. seacontainers however are always sealed

27 yrs in the biz. Local, in Seattle. I work for United Motor Freight. Although I do not do store door warehouse Freight any longer, when I did do store door and I encountered Warehouse employees like this, I wouldn't talk to them I would call my Trucking Company who would call warehouse management. Then, all of a sudden, the truck was getting unloaded. By the time I needed to have papers signed, I would get that same stupid smirk from the warehouse employee that I would always get when I encountered someone who didn't want to work. As I drove away, I just laughed to myself thinking, "Oh well, more standby time for me." You can do whatever you want to dude but, you're just holding things up that eventually have to be taken care of by somebody else. It's my opinion that eventually you're going to get fired for doing things like this on a regular basis. Everywhere house has surveillance cameras running 24/7 now. Guaranteed that somebody is watching what you're doing. Good luck with all that.

View on Reddit #29075665

weebdiffusion@reddit

Because it won't break the tandems especially if you have a dock lock that the trailer sits on
View on Reddit #29152273

Thanks, we have a pit bull that locks to the trailers, and on top of that, we have to make drivers pull out from under trailers and disconnect air hoses before we can unload live trailers.

Not with a dock lock the rear of the trailer sits on it
View on Reddit #29152317

Spurgenasty78@reddit

Our recieving dock has to have the tandems all the way back for the trailer to sit right at the door. They built receiving a new dock many years after the original building was completed and the company that put them in (in my opinion) got the grade wrong. Now if the tandems aren’t back it doesn’t allow the dock plate to line up
View on Reddit #29034268

Overall-Studio-3867@reddit

Our docks are the same and we don't have interlocks. We politely request tandems pushed back so our forklifts don't drop 3 feet when entering the trailer.
View on Reddit #29039337

So, now he's sitting there, with minimal info, and you're turning it into a joke that cuts into his ability to feed his family. He can't catch legal crap for not breaking a seal, but will if he does. Keep that in mind. He could be relying on you informing him about this to be able to get to a safe place to park and take a hot shower. It's $#i+ like this that make drivers want to quit, then folks wonder why the drivers dgaf.

I did this once to a shipper that wasted my time. Let them figure out how to move it as they didn’t have yard dogs. Arrived at my appointment 30 mins early. Checked in. Told to wait for a door to open up. Finally get called 2 hours later to dock at 12. I get there and there’s a trailer there. Dude really expected me to move trailers around. Naw. I went back in. Told him I don’t move other trailers. He gave me shit. Eventually assigned a new door. I get there. Guess what? Another fucking trailer is there. I just put and left mine next to it in a door and told the guy it’s all set cya later. I dipped.

View on Reddit #29031011

Apprehensive_Fault_5@reddit

I've been banned from a Pepsi facility one time. I drove for their primary carrier. That carrier terminated Pepsi's contract the moment I left the facility. They had to unban me from the facility and fire the employee that caused the situation as well as the manager who banned me in order to get their contract back. There was another place up in Minnesota that tried to ban me from returning after I ran the8r gate down when they refused to allow my to leave so I could go somewhere to use the bathroom (after being stuck there for 2 days waiting to be unloaded). I was on the phone with the police when I ran the gate down, and I did it on police orders. I called my company immediately after and told them about it. They called the customer who said I was banned from returning. The company sued them on my behalf, I ended up getting $2,000 for the two days I was there ($1k/day of detention is how the system marked it on my pay settlement) and that place is not shut down. I believe the city of Minneapolis also charged them with unlawful detainment or kidnapping or whatever the legal term is. If a company ever fires a driver for not putting up with this kind of shit, it's a horrible company to drive for.

View on Reddit #29041501

Apprehensive_Fault_5@reddit

If that's true, then each of those carriers are very important for them. They can't afford to suddenly lose access to, what, 20% of their carrier workforce over one driver, but if that driver was being mistreated by GM, that carrier very much could terminate the contract and force GM to correct their behavior. More likely is that GM has hundreds, or thousands of carriers they work with, and this one is a tiny fraction of that, so now GM doesn't care if they lose that carrier, and would rather keep their own business running smooth by firing this one carrier and having the other few hundred or thousand carriers pick up the few loads per month slack.

This reminds me of a place in Houston I delivered to 2 years ago. I get told to go to a dock on the far opposite end of the facility from the office and wait until I get a call about my bills being ready before leaving the dock (even if the light is green). I back in, sit there for 3 hours with a green light. It finally turns red and I continue to sit for another hour before they even start unloading me. 4 hours later, the light turns green again, but no call. I sit for another hour waiting for this call. Finally, I decide to pull away from the dock, check to make sure the trailer is empty, then close it up before driving back to the office. They tell me the bills still aren't ready. When I ask how long it will be or when they will be ready, the guy I was talking to says "it's not my problem" to which I say "it will be" as I go back outside to my truck, go back to where the docks are at, and park sideways across a dozen or so docks. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to parking, so I had to wiggle around a bit to get the truck and trailer parallel with the wall and as close as possible to it. Before I could finish perfectly parking, I get a call saying the bills are ready! They didn't think I'd do it, or waste my own time with it, but jokes on them! I get paid by the hour when at customers and shippers, so I'd be more than happy to take my 34 right there.

yeah a few places have had me do that.. they tell me to back into my door and wait for someone to come knock so they can break the seal and then i open my doors.. recently i went to a target DC for the first time where they open the doors from the inside the warehouse
View on Reddit #29018406

J-Kensington@reddit

Yeah, driving reefer you get into more of those facilities. I think the only place I got into a place where they open the doors from the inside when I was running dry van was the Jim Beam brewery. Honestly I wish they were all like that. Not because I'm just another lazy truck driver, although it is always nice to have less work, but because there's just so much less risk of any kind of damage. To the trailer, to the product, no risk of unsealing it too early and possibly getting the load rejected, everything works out easier if the forklift driver is the one that opens the doors. Amazon in particular should be doing that, especially for intermodal trailers.

Knew a refrigerated truck driver who did that on purpose. He was sent out on a rush delivery. On arrival he was told they weren’t ready for him. Sat 3 days running keeping everything cold until they said he could pull up to the dock. They bitched at him that the doors were still closed. Said they would stay that way until he got a com check to cover his expenses. Took another half hour to get his money.

I’m used to roll up doors. On occasion I get one of our old trailers with barn doors. I have backed in and forgot to open them as well. Other drivers were probably shaking their head.

I'm 6 months in to driving CDL, been doing commercial distribution for about 10 years though... I ask EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. and double check with either the office or the yard jockey/other drivers if I see them close by. Some places care about tandems, most care about the doors being open when some don't (open from the inside/check seal themselves), some care about chocked wheels, some care about red brake line being pulled and locked by them. I make sure I ask because I don't want to waste time, since that's the only thing I'm not paid for. :(

I would tell him, and I might also stay and watch so that a bit of urgency is conveyed. Nobody ever had to tell me to open my doors unless it was part of the protocol (there were a few, but it was rare) to first bump the dock still buttoned up. I wanted the fuck out of these places and back on the road where I belonged. Any dumb little mistake I might've made to delay that was quickly converted into a habit to prevent such things from happening again. I never did anything to make it harder for the folks in the dock, the paper chasers, the bean counters... nobody, cuz then I would also have difficulties, whether at that time or later on somehow. That said, though...! ☝️🤣

View on Reddit #29025047

You don’t get it. Poor behavior from some reflects the industry. Almost everything associated with trucking is shit because most of the people are shit and who wants to pay shit people ? I don’t know how much time you have in this game but at one point you could drive seasonal and make a living. It is so thoroughly polluted now I see no hope whatsoever.

Purpose_Embarrassed@reddit

I remember those days.
View on Reddit #29033790

spyder7723@reddit

I do get it. There are truck drivers... and then there are good professional drivers. The difference is deliberate choices each driver makes on their own. As for my time... bought my first truck in 95. So in my 30th year. As for income potential... working class income has fallen across the board over the last several decades, that isn't specific to trucking. But there are still really good paying jobs out there for good professional truck drivers.
View on Reddit #29026449

Different-Air-2000@reddit

Honestly, the difference between drivers is opportunity. There used to be an emphasis on a standard. That bar is disappearing and quite frankly not holding everyone accountable is the problem. If you are on the road moving freight everyone should be a good professional driver or at least working to become one. As for my time, I started driving a rig when a limousine license was accepted. Not to date myself but driving a truck was always secondary and not meant to be a career.
View on Reddit #29027810

spyder7723@reddit

That was right before my time. Was fun listening to all the old guys bitch they had to get a cdl. Yes industry wide standards have been lowered. But you will find the best jobs still have high standards of their drivers. Some of us even require drivers dress appropriately keep their trucks clean.
