Those over 40, how did you celebrate your 40th birthday?

My 40th is late this year, and given some medical complications it's actually an achievement to reach this milestone (if 40 is a milestone these days).

I was thinking of hiring a venue and inviting all my family, friends and acquaintances for a party, but that involves things like catering and music, I have yet to work out a budget, and the year is ticking away fast. I looked into a local venue in February who never got back to me, and then life got in the way. I think I would like a party, but I'm still dithering and worried that time is running out. Ideally I'd have everyone I love come to my home and serve home-cooked food (or a takeaway), but my flat is too small for that sort of thing.

Did you throw a big party? Go out for dinner with those close to you? Hope someone would throw a surprise gathering for you? Ignore it entirely?
