We have been in election mode since the last election. It has been nearly four years of living in election mode. Usually post election, it ends. That didn't happen this last time around. We are on this constantly heightened political mode.

I do feel like people are talking about it a lot less than 2016 and 2020 though. I think 2016 was so pronounced because Trump was a big fascination for people. His whole schtick was new for politics. Love it or hate it. And 2020 was so heavily discussed because of covid and the lockdown. I think this time it just feels like the same election as 2020 to a lot of people. Same two candidates, but older. It definitely feels like people are tuned in less than the past two elections. But it'll likely start being more amplified as we get like 2 months away.

There’s nothing to really talk about until the actual election, at least in comparison to the last couple of elections. There’s no juicy scandal as like Covid policies or Trump calling Ukraine for dirt on Biden this time around. Even the trial didn’t have any real heft to it. There also wasn’t really any close fights for nominations for people to tear each other apart over, no “the DNC is screwing over Bernie!” or anything. We all knew Trump was going to get the nomination. It’s just 2020, but Biden’s in office this time around. There are *some* things, and I’m sure some people will comment trying to balloon what slim pickings they have, but there just isn’t really anything to talk about until someone does something either incredibly stupid, potentially treasonous, or extremely out of character. Trump saying “controversial thing #4386” doesn’t have the same impact as it did in 2016.

The election / political news flows nonstop actually—in spite of the fact that neither candidate has much of a platform or suite of policies. Biden has been silent on his second term plans, and Trump just rants about sharks and batteries and destroying his enemies. A lot of people are tuning it all for now because (A) a large majority don’t want either candidate, (B) they just talk smack about each other and pitch snark on social media, and (C) almost everyone has their minds made up already. There’s no talk of how to save Social Security or what to do about carbon emissions. It’s just two old men screaming at each other. That’s not to say there isn’t tons of media coverage.

A big part of it is that there really aren't any undecided voters for the presidential election so there isn't much to talk about. Seriously, Biden or Trump? If someone doesn't have a hard preference right now they shouldn't be allowed to drive. They'd end up on the road stopped dead in the middle of an intersection because they can't figure out whether they should go straight or turn into oncoming traffic.

It'll be Trump vs Biden. Biden...doesn't have much more than inflation to his name this time around, unless you deeply follow politics Trump...doesn't have much more than the perpetual court case, which he will keep appealing, so the felony part might not even stick, unless you deeply follow politics. Inflation is hurting everyone, interest is up, the border is closing again, markets are meh like usual on an election year, the EV dream is stalling, but Amtrak added a new route. The election is going to be "pick the one you don't want and vote the other way again". Is Biden great? No. Is Trump great? No. Is whoever the third party is even known? No. Are Democrats great? No. Are Republicans great? No. Are either organized? No. Congratulations, 2020 again. Now what would make it interesting, and not in a good way, is if they put Trump in jail or restrict him with parole. That would get interesting very fast, especially since previous similar cases for previous similar crimes don't usually do much. And it is the US. Anyone can become president.

We're definitely hearing about it, but tbh it's basically Trump v Biden 2.0 and both of them have had a first term for us to judge them on. Also I think people definitely got used to Trump's media circus while he was in office and now that Biden has a more normal media presence, we forget that's what it's supposed to be like.

I think it’s part outside perspective (a good portion of front page news here is about the election) and partially that this is a rematch of the past two candidates plus this major wild card of one of them now being a convicted felon. So you have this weird mix of “ok, it’s Trump and Biden again, been there, done that” and “the only thing anyone is saying is we have no clue how this will go, that’s not a very interesting conversation”. My sense is also that at this point a lot of people are a little burnt out from the constant political panic that’s been at the forefront of a lot of social circles for the past almost 10 years.

I think the big reason is we know who the candidates will be. The primaries are over. There just isn’t much to talk about. You either are on team Trump or team Biden and I don’t see many moderates ready to be swayed one way or the other. Trump’s legal issues have been dominating the news. Biden gaffes have been dominating the news. So in part I think you are underestimating how much each candidate has been in the news and this election just isn’t an exciting one.

I think this is a good example of the sort of media silos that we all exist in, in the current media environment. Nearly everything we see is fed to us by personalized algorithms unless you make a serious effort to avoid them. Even then, our choices between different countries are massively limited. Without some trickery and more effort than most people want to put into it, it's impossible to see what's on TV right now in a different country. If you don't follow the social media accounts of American political media outlets, you might think nobody's talking about the election. If you *do*, you might think *everyone* is.

You literally can not open a news site without news about Biden and Trump. Click into 'Politics' and that is about all you get. Polls are being published weekly. If you are looking for coverage of the election itself - there is nothing to report as we are in the lull between the primaries and party conventions (where the presumptive nominees are officially nominated). Politically Biden and Trump are known quantities so there isn't much to cover from that sense - just "what was said and done today". The usual media partisanship is obviously at play - Fox is focused Hunter Biden's conviction and Biden supposedly freezing and MSNBC is focused on Trump's legal troubles.

In no particular order: * It's June. There's normally a bit of a lull right now, between the primaries (see my next point) and the conventions. The election still isn't for five months. It will get plenty of attention when it's closer. * Since the primary system took hold, there has never been a primary season as boring as this one was. * Unlike in 2020, the incumbent administration has a much lower profile and is not ginning up nearly as much attention.
