That post about whether £1.5k a week disposable income makes you 'rich'. I got the point of some of the comments - the *really* rich would consider that pocket money - but damn you could tell the commenters who must have been teenagers or pensioners with how disconnected they were from the reality of salaries and expenses.

£1.5k of weekly disposable income, in my mind I'm basically a millionaire.
View on Reddit #28358341

somerandomnew0192783@reddit

You'd have to be earning considerably over 100k a year to have that much spare cash a week, so you probably would be a millionaire.
View on Reddit #28367548

MycoMacro@reddit

100k a year is 60k post tax. It would take 17 years of not spending a single penny of that money (so assuming you pay no rent and photosynthesise instead of buying food) to become a millionaire. The step between earning an ok salary and being a millionaire is massive. People earning 100k are not rich by a long shot.
View on Reddit #28419029

somerandomnew0192783@reddit

Yeah but we're talking about disposable income here, so you need to add rent/mortgage, car, food, bills, etc on top of that 100k. Realistically that's going to push you up to 140-150k/year. And assuming you're on that much, you most likely have an expensive house & car which are assets that add to your net worth. You also likely have investments which will go up in value every year. Suddenly it's a lot less than 17 years to reach millionaire status.

Assuming we're talking the wider Reddit rather than just UK-centric subs, any mention of letting cats outside can bring the rage.
View on Reddit #28342608

GaryHippo@reddit

I seriously don’t understand why yanks will buy a cat, knowing that their area might be dangerous for cats, and then never let the cat outside. Poor kitty.
View on Reddit #28345942

ladyatlanta@reddit

As a cat owner in the U.K., I can guarantee you that cats are safer and just as happy as indoor cats - given that they’re allowed plenty of room to play and explore inside. Also, making sure they can still go outside through walks, a cattio, or enclosing your garden gives them all they need with the outdoors. I feel that a lot of cat owners let them roam because they don’t know how to play with a cat, or they thought that cats were “less work” than dogs - giving them enriching activities, plenty of toys, etc.
View on Reddit #28352060

shiftyemu@reddit

Ignore the down votes, you're right. Outside there are cars, rivers, puddles of leaked antifreeze, foxes, dogs, FIV+ cats, sheds to get shut in and sick, twisted people. Not to mention the way cats decimate local bird populations. Letting cats outside is just irresponsible. Just because you're in the minority in the UK does not make you wrong. It's the same as any other animal, if you can't provide them the mental stimulation required to keep them happy then don't get them.

It's awful. My nana once let her dog out in her (6ft fence enclosed) back garden for a piss. A cat was hiding behind a large pot and the dog got to the poor cat before she did. It's injuries were unsurvivable and the cat died in her arms. Fucked her up for months. She was afraid to let her own dog out in her own garden. One of my aunts cats got locked in a neighbours shed for 5 days. The organ failure was unreversable. One of my cats crawled home after someone shot it. I get some folks don't have these experiences but that lass throwing a cat in a bin made nationwide news.
View on Reddit #28372046

Jamericho@reddit

I’m fairly sure the ones who are downvoting are the types who claim they care about animals but are actually just ignorant of the dangers their cats can face outdoors. I think it’s the feeling of moral superiority rather than actually caring at this point. It’s the old “My cat has never been hurt and he’s always outside” type. Cats are perfectly fine being brought up indoors as long as they are given the right mental stimulation and have enough room to roam. Nearly every one of my wife’s colleagues have indoor cats due to bad experiences in the past or due to what they see in work every day. As you very validly pointed out, it’s not just the owners of the cat that gets affected - it’s dog owners, drivers and even the people that witness it or find the body.
View on Reddit #28374986

Add that overseas, you have all of those problems PLUS scorching heat, very large predators, and venomous insects/animals. It’s extremely irresponsible to let animals outside unattended there.

>making sure they can still go outside through walks, a cattio, or enclosing your garden gives them all they need with the outdoors This is my point though. Many Americans on this site just seem to refuse to let the cat outdoors.
View on Reddit #28352713

AggressiveCry3659@reddit

I’ll elucidate for you. Everything is dangerous outside in almost every state, both in rural and in urban areas. You have the obvious threats just the same as we have here: cars, poison, and humans with nefarious intentions. What you also have are venomous insects and animals, extreme temperatures , and large birds of prey and other predators. By letting a cat outside unattended, it’s way too easy for them to be hit by a car, attacked by a coyote/bear/alligator (hell, even by other cats as well as stray dogs- people truly don’t realise how bad the homeless animal situation is in the U.S.), or stung/bitten by a brown recluse, cottonmouth, scorpion, etc. So it’s really not cruel at all by trying to protect them. Granted yes, they could put a harness on them and walk them like dogs, but most cats can’t stand that. 🙃
View on Reddit #28357641

Apidium@reddit

If the zoo can train their lions to have their nails trimmed and to get their yearly vaccinations then folks can harness train their cats. Folks act like it's impossible simply because it's difficult. Cats can come to like it, if you put in the time.
View on Reddit #28372133

GaryHippo@reddit

No one seems to be listening to what I’m saying. They still buy cats even thought they know the risks involved and that it would be at harm in their environment, so the cat just lives indoors for its whole life.
View on Reddit #28365662

AggressiveCry3659@reddit

I’m genuinely confused. Are you advocating that no one that lives in these areas with threats to the pet’s safety should get pets?
View on Reddit #28365865

GaryHippo@reddit

Sort of. I just don’t understand why you’d purchase a cat with the knowledge that the cat would be extremely threatened when it’s in its environment.
View on Reddit #28365970

AggressiveCry3659@reddit

Yeah, okay that’s fair. I think part of the issue is there are SO many strays and cats in shelters desperate for homes, so the idea is that an imperfect home is better than starving or being caged until inevitable euthanasia. It’s honestly heartbreaking
View on Reddit #28366308

ladyatlanta@reddit

Can people not make an outdoor enclosure of some kind? It’s really not that expensive especially when it’s considering that you’re giving your cat more safe space to play and explore. Ps by “enclosure” I do **not** mean a cage. Please google cattio’s.
View on Reddit #28361437

AggressiveCry3659@reddit

Tbh ever since I saw that lass throw a cat into a bin I have thought letting cats outside unsupervised is a shite idea. As a kid I had one cat just vanish and another cat shot. The shot cat dragged it's limp rear end home and collapsed in the kitchen. We were able to get the fucking bullet removed and he recovered for a little while but then died when a blood clot in his back end worked loose. I belive the two issues were linked. Then my aunts cat wandered into a neighbours shed and hid for a nap in there without the neighbour realising. That cat was locked in there for 5 days. The subsequent organ failure was too much. My nanas dog was then out in the garden. Cat came on in and she got the cat before my nana did. It didn't survice. My own dog was attacked by a cat in our garden. Cat was unhurt (and clawed me up something awful when I grabbed it to make sure it was not bitten) but my dog had to be rushed to the vet for a gouged eye. If my dog had been big that cat wouldn't be alive. For years after both me and my nana have been afraid to let our dogs out into our own enclosed gardens because some wandering cat might be out there. A lot of cats would live longer and healthier lives of they didn't just get to wander off unsupervised to be ran over, locked in sheds, thrown in bins, mauled by dogs because they went into the wrong garden, fucking shot etc etc. That's ignoring brawls with other cats and the issue of disease spread by the difficult to track feral population (since it's a coin flip if a cat wandering about is feral or not). My sister has harness trained her two cats. One is a former stray and has 0 interest in going outside and will yowl soemthing horrid when he has to be dragged out to go to the vet. Yes it looks a bit silly but you only need a cat you love to be shot in the back once before you start getting the idea you don't want that to happen again.

It's all blown up as a means of deflecting attention and manufacturing consent. It's nothing new. Locally relevant one. I've seen multiple people post a question asking what county my Borough is in (Havering). This is simply answered by looking at a map, reading the law, looking at local road signs, or just simple fact finding on Google really - it's an incredibly simple question to answer in this day and age. Unfortunately, people arnt capable of doing that - so you end up with an argument between those that want to use logic in a discussion - and those who refuse to consider any logic. A local poll found more than half the local population don't know where they live - and it's something that really lowers your view of the human race. (The answer is Greater London btw)

View on Reddit #28369457

View on Reddit #28370022

Yeh, it's a really weird phenomenon that I don't think you can really appreciate unless you live here. Being in London affects the majority in Havering on a daily basis I'd say - at least weekly. I can understand children being taught it mistakenly, but surely they grow out of it as adults and quite literally learn to read the signs?

View on Reddit #28343013

Garfie489@reddit

Old habits die hard, I guess? Havering is on the border of Essex - and unfortunately, a LOT of businesses never updated their address... including the NHS. It's one of those things, however, that no matter how many ways you logically prove something - people are set in their ways and ignore the logic. The experience even forms part of one of my lectures at university, where I argue to students that a triangle has 4 sides - point being to encourage them to learn not to say something is "because it is" and instead provide genuine authoritative sources on a claim.
View on Reddit #28343137

Sweet-Annual-3964@reddit

I mean, it's better than the line I used where the illuminati supress the knowledge of the 4th side as part of a conspiracy :p But yeh, you have the 3 corners - plus the inside. The inside is a side. Hence, it is called the in side. I pre edit Wikipedia for this lecture to support me as well. It's one of those the students are confused at the time but come to really understand the point. Asked one student what's SQRT(-1), they said i - asked them how ridiculous does that sound?

I've nearly been mowed down by a number of cyclists as a pedestrian, and yet I still have more human decency for them than your average car driver.

Anything about children. Some redditors are so proud to announce that nobody will fuck them.

BannedNeutrophil@reddit

This is a website full of weirdos who will only talk positively about a child when they want to fuck it. That's not even a joke. Reddit was a major hub of child pornography back in the day. Subs like Jailbait were huge and stayed up because they were on the very knife edge of legality.
