My PC keeps freezing and I can’t turn it off unless I hold the power button.

Hi, I’m gonna be honest, I’m not that tech savvy.
Recently, a month or so ago, my PC started to crash. I’m not sure if a file is corrupted or something of that sort. For instance:
-
A lot of times when I first start my computer, it will crash and I need hold down the power button to fully turn it off.
-
Sometimes when I’m watching videos, it will freeze and stutter before again me needing to hold down the power button.
Do you guys have any advice on how to fix this?
EDIT:
Build:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Motherboard: MPG B550l GAMING EDGE RAM: 32 GB RAM OS: Window 11 Pro.
Also not sure if relevant but it’s in a NZXT H1 case.

I have a similar problem, it started earlier today specifically when I play beamng drive I'm not sure why it's happening

Hello ILoveDadsCum (I love the username btw). I've been building/repairing desktops for over 3 years, am certified to troubleshoot hardware and software, and have 1.5 years experience in help desk.
Please look at Windows Reliability Monitor (type in "View Reliability History" in search bar) and post any errors that show at the time near the crash.
While you wait for my response to those errors, update your computer to the latest version of windows, and make sure your graphics card is up to date as well.
Now run these commands in your command prompt:
"sfc /scannow"
"chkdsk /f"
"DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth"
These will check the integrity of your windows operating system, drive partitions, and drive sectors, and promptly repair them. You may need to restart during this process.
Let me know if anything comes back for those checks, or if your issue is solved.
Edit: misspelled a command (ouch, that hurts lol)
LostStype@reddit
Hey! I also have the same problem, and it's already a bit annoying. :( since previously it happened to me when I did multiple tasks on the laptop like playing and streaming at the same time, but now just by playing any game like (Valorant) the laptop freezes and the only solution is to turn it off from the power button I'm a bit tired and frustrated, could you help me? :c
Savings_Cat2143@reddit
Hey, did you get it fixed? A month ago i was playing video games, rocket league to be specific, and my laptop crashed. I thought it was just a small issue but upon restart i kept getting a bunch of errors, screen flickering, not turning on, saying windows fatal errors, both blue and black screens of death Initially thought it was to do with my updating the nvidia drivers but since then i decided to not update anything but the issue still persists, if im watching yt or just browsing on chrome it still freezes. Repair shop said that it had to do w the ssd but they replaced it and realised it wasnt, they then said it might have to do with the ram stick or the whole motherboard which i hope isnt the case.
Im_benevolent@reddit
It's so annoying. mine freezes randomly but it has a higher chance of freezing when I'm watching videos. It also make me paranoid about any academic thing I need to do
Comeino@reddit
Hey same issue! Started happening since a Windows Update 2 weeks ago. Anyone else?
WorldlyBet4172@reddit
Mines been doing it for the past week
When I'm playing fortnite my pc will freeze completely and I have to power it down, it does it here and there and it's annoying
Seems like alot of us are having the same issue so maybe it is a windows update that's doing it
Comeino@reddit
I resolved the issue by deleting a clone of "Microsoft Gaming Services" and "GameSomethingImput", for some reason I had 2 listed in Services after the update. Uninstalled and removed the related entries from registry. I also noticed that my power settings changed, my screen started turning off after 10 min and PC began hibernating after no use (both have been set to Never turn off before) so I guess Microsoft fucked up something related with power management as well. I changed the mode back to max performance, disabled windows selectively turning shit off to save power, disabled hibernation, sleep mode and quick boot. Reinstalled my drivers for GPU, CPU and network/Bluetooth adapters. Did the DISM stuff and found corrupted window files. Ever since I've done that I didn't have a single freeze.
throwawayyourmom92@reddit
ty for dropping your solutions, realized windows pulled the same sht concerning the sleep settings

My freezing/ shutting down started the day after updating Windows. I play 5-10 minutes of COD BO6 and my PC freezes up. Seems to be a few different solutions? I’ve noticed my Ryzen 5600x 3.7 CPU, is clocking at 4.6 ALL the time.
Any suggestions?
Comeino@reddit
I solved my issue but the solution will depend on your build and error log.
Press Win + R and run Perfmon /rel what does it say under critical events?
Can you give me your build info? (Motherboard, RAM, Videocard etc.)
Downtown_Cobbler_375@reddit
It just says “Windows stopped working”
PC specs: Ryzen 5600x Nvidia 3080 MSI X570 MOBO 16GB GSKILL RAM
TotallySnafu@reddit
Did you fix this? Mine started after playing BO6 too and now I can’t play games without experiencing a hard crash
SnooComics3429@reddit
Mine kept freezing too. I reseated the ram and set the voltage lower and it works great now. I just need to not use it to the max for a long time.

Do you found the solution?
deleted_by_reddit@reddit
I'm late to the party but Thanks for adding all this, completely forgot Windows Reliability Monitor still exists, seems a fair few people are having this issue and Event Viewer doesn't really show or say much except "Windows Stopped Working and was shut down unexpectedly" seems like these freezes are happening when Windows forces updates.
Been getting the same odd audio loss, then inch by inch freeze up til you are forced to turn it off at the switch. These are my errors and specs

Hey same problem as yours here. Have you found a way of fixing it without a hard reset?
deleted_by_reddit@reddit
I did a complete reformat and it still does it every now and then, more when watching youtube/streams etc then anything and did notice it's when Windows trys to push updates. Tested an older Windows build on another machine and it didn't have the same issue so I think it's just a pretty shit current windows build cross with a lot of new hardware.
Do you trim anything off of windows? Bloatware/edge etc? Cause I think that might be the underlying issue, Windows/Microsoft getting shitty people are debloating their spyware cause these issues only really existed once I started going through and Nuking Edge/Cortana/Skype and their registry keys/remaining files etc.
Remarkable_Map8993@reddit
You are the first person I've ever seen with my exact same problem. I did nuke Windows bloatware, but I also had this exact same problem with Ubuntu, I'll try reinstalling Windows, hopefully this will end the problem. I'll reach out if it didn't lol

Same here . Returned the PC for another of of different specs. Same freezing issue when trying to watch you tube and play a game . No rhyme or reason it seems.
Quite frustrating as something as basic as that causes a hard crash / freeze.
Specs are as follows. I5 14400 - 32gb 6000 Corsair - ASRock b760 m-c - Asus 4060 8gb
Previous rig was a i7 14700 with 32gb 6000 Corsair - MSI b760 pro - Zotac 4060 8gb .

Same here. This happens around 1 month after I upgraded my GPU, so this is a bit scary to me, not sure if my GPU is defective. But if multiple people had this issue then maybe this means something wrong with Windows Update.
Level_Substance_3116@reddit
please tell me that you found a solution. i have had this problem for so long but i dont want to reset my pc

hi, did you ever find a fix?
Camilo-alvarez@reddit
that's true, i turn off/debloated my os cause i don't have any room in my ssd for the moment, and this has sense
lukenog@reddit
sfc /scannow gets stuck during the verification process for me, at exactly 69% every time. Then my PC crashes. The crashes I'm getting are strange because I don't get any error messages, blue screens, or even any programs telling me they're not responding. It just freezes to where I can move my cursor around the screen but can't click anything, and ctrl+alt+del doesn't open the task manager menu options. I have to shut off with the power button.
Medicallyree-Tartd@reddit
So this is still happening after doing said things. Any idea what it could be?

Ok_Cartographer4036@reddit
what did you do?
Own_Bullfrog_318@reddit
Just followed the instructions mate - ran cmd as administrator, did the three commands - "sfc /scannow"
"chkdsk /f"
"DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth"
With a restart after the "chkdsk /f" command, and it solved my issue.
TheRealChikBitz@reddit
I did all of these things and nothing led to a fix. I ran the system diagnostics in bios and it said there were no hardware issues. I've ran my antivirus software thru a few scans and nothing came up.
The first few crashes it would blue screen, but the recent crashes flash it for not even one second and immediately the screen goes black. When the screen freezes I can move the mouse for a few seconds but I can't click anything, then everything freezes until it crashes.
Are there any other possible fixes?
Yukio_fpsgenius@reddit
same issue, i also turn off the xmp profile or set it to 1030 mhz although my ram is 1600 mhz and still couldnt run anything, still crashes, when i try to play some valorant or genshin, it freezes at the lobby , and then crashes. To speak honesly, i cant do anything but hold the power button to sut it down, i cant find any solution for this problem, may people come help us i promise
deleted_by_reddit@reddit
Hey I’m having the same issue and for the second command I got “Chkdsk cannot run bc the volume is in use by another process”
And the third command it says “The cleanup option is unknown”
deleted_by_reddit@reddit
For the second command, you just need to restart the computer and windows will run the check on start.
For the third, I mispelled it. Try it again (typing all this on mobile, sorry)
deleted_by_reddit@reddit
Okay the third command still says the same thing.
not_a_nuggets@reddit
DISM.exe/Online/Cleanup-image/Restorehealth
bivoir@reddit
This has been happening since I ‘upgraded’ to windows 11. Except it’s happening more and more often even without running anything. Even hard reset it doesn’t turn on immediately.
kvngbako@reddit
Hi, did you get any fix to this issue. My issue is exactlyike yours.
bivoir@reddit
Nah, I just have to hard reset each time it happens… I think it’s on its way out because once in a while it boots to bios. One day it probably won’t turn on at all.
It also has a loose hdmi connection for the monitor to the video card so it’ll often turn on but no signal to the monitor.
BelleUxo@reddit
I know this is old. I’m having this issue right now pretty much where the PC keeps freezing whether I’m playing a game or just sitting in desktop I’ve been able to run games before on this PC perfectly fine like cyberpunk at 200 FPS and I’ve run every kind of diagnostic possible on this PC. I’ve reinstalled drivers. I’ve reinstalled windows I’ve run disc checks. I did DDU. I turned off XPO and now I have done a new install of Windows completely fresh with no graphics drivers or Wi-Fi drivers installed in. That seems to affect the issue however I have reinstalled the drivers before like I said and it still was corrupt so now I’m nervous that if I restart the PC and re-download the drivers it’s gonna corrupted again am I downloading the wrong ones or what’s the issue here?
TheKrafter2217@reddit

Time_Marsupial_7252@reddit
Hello! I have been having these issues for a while and FINALLY found a solution that works for me. It is as simple as going into the BIOS and disabling c-states.
The freezing used to happen at least once ever few hours but it has been days since the last freeze. Try it out and see if it works for you
4NAX_1@reddit
Hey man! I know it's been a year since you posted this comment, but I’ve been suffering from the same issue. My old gaming laptop which I still use to this day randomly freezes, forcing me to hold down the power button to reboot. But it isn't actually truly random, it only happens if I boot it up and leave it idle for about 10 minutes. My temporary fix is running a blank video in the background to "distract" the laptop from freezing, but if I turn the video off for long enough, it freezes. Interestingly, if I boot it up and immediately play a game like Nightreign or Elden Ring, it won't freeze for literally hours. However, if too much is running in the background at once, it still freezes even with the video running. A friend of mine previously fixed this for me, but he has since, let's say "no longer exists" and after a recent factory reset due to a virus, the problem is back. I’m completely lost on how to fix it. Reminding you that i absolutely don't know anything about computers, At all.

I vote ram as well. Remove it all, put 1 stick in, run it. See if that freezing stops. Repeat until all sticks have been checked. Label bad and good, replace as needed.
This was what solved this issue for me. Other option would be the power supply. Often overlooked, but bad power runs EVERYTHING badly. Sadly a cheap psu tester only says yup, this circuit has power, or not.
trailsman@reddit
I believe this is my issue. Going to test them individually. Only problem is I'm not going to be able to get a replacement set. And in today's market, given I got the RAM kit on sale by luck for about 25% of today's prices, just getting a refund isn't going to help me
Flat-Distribution268@reddit
This worked. It was one ram stick causing the same issue
Alarming_Honeydew_35@reddit
I solved this. It was occuring for 3 years even after changing PC. To fix this just remove ram volatge a little and cpu MegaHertz. ask chat gpt for your specific cpu how much you need to decrease ram voltage and MHZ.
The problem occurs because you are using ram at max speed and not all CPU silicion can handle it.
deleted_by_reddit@reddit
That's a hard crash, could be caused by bad hardware, bad power, too much overclock etc.
Check cooling first, clean fans etc. Then remove overclock. If still crashing check power - did you add new gear that uses more?
girIinRed@reddit
I got this issue today, but I never over locked anything and the only thing I added is an antenna I bought off Ali express. could it be the issue?
Hawk3y305@reddit

Zealousideal-Rain566@reddit
The computer could also freeze if the hard drive which contains the OS is detached.
So OP, check the SATA cables, or if it's an M:2 SSD, seat it into its place.

ILoveDadsCum@reddit (OP)
No, I didn’t add anything else to the initial build.
deleted_by_reddit@reddit
Was it stable in the past, and now it's not? Or has it always been like this?
Have you ever updated the bios? Definitely do that. Then make sure stuff is set correctly in bios - the defaults are not ok. Set memory to use DOCP (on intel this is called xmp). Can leave rest of stuff on auto.
Rk9qa@reddit
Did you found solution ?
Alarming_Honeydew_35@reddit
I have fixed this. Go into bios and lower ram frequency. For example I turned mine from 6000 to 5600. Just ask chat gpt how much to lower it.

I know it's been a year ago but I'm legit having freezing issues with my H1 pre built PC... Can't figure out how to stop the resets
Indi_Drones@reddit
I know it's been a year, did you fix any issues?
The H1 is a piece of shit.
AIO failed on me (And a lot of other people) not even a year in. PSU is 'meh' at best.
Ended up doing a case upgrade with a better PSU, and had to buy a new CPU Cooler. Fuck NZXT H1 case.
Garbage.
a1stakesauce_lol@reddit
Hi drewolf.
Is your issue freezing like program (software) freezing? Or is it more like hardware freezes, then resets?
I would start by checking temps. If temps are high, try checking your cooling solution/case. If it's really dusty, try cleaning out the dust ( try this first because cheap). If this didn't work or temps were not high, try a system refresh (back up your data. Again this step because easy and free)
Another question. Did this happen suddenly? Or has your computer been slowing/glitching out/lagging/stuttering? If you are here, it's potentially hardware related.
AbsolNotFound@reddit

Careful-Computer-685@reddit

brt_kokan@reddit
i have it too now, i think after updating windows, this happened to me before too but stopped for months and now came back, i think it's just amd drivers/windows update
KirenSensei@reddit
I have nvidia so it probably just windows. Turning off xmp fixed it for me and I haven't had any problems since. Is it possible windows broke something with xmp and expo for some people?
brt_kokan@reddit
what's xmp and how do i turn it off?
KirenSensei@reddit
I think on amd it's called expo. But it basically let's you ram run at it's rated speed instead of the default speeds.
brt_kokan@reddit
what is it like an application or some setting i need to turn off?
WraithOfGluttony@reddit
Ye it happen 2 more times since my last post.
KirenSensei@reddit
I disabled xmp and it went away. It's weird everybody had it at the same time like this though. Maybe a windows 11 memory issue?
Fearless-Brush-1908@reddit
It’s been happening to me for literal months now, it happened to the point my computer couldn’t take it into and gave me the Bsod and was stuck on there permanently until I had to remove the ssd and install a new by data wiping. But now it’s back on my new ssd…. So I’m concluding it’s no longer a software problem but hardware issue.. I’m fiddling with my ram as many other said to see if that’s the issue
WraithOfGluttony@reddit
So I updated to windows 11 and it hasn't happened for 3 weeks now, I am happy I decided to upgrade. It was probably faulty windows 10 update for me or whatever it could of been disappeared after the upgrade.
Fearless-Brush-1908@reddit
The thing is unless to change the ssd I had to install the new windows, so we’re on the same boat. The point is I did exactly what you did but now 4 months later the issue happened again, so might happen to you beware.
WraithOfGluttony@reddit
Oh damn, hope it does not happen to me. Thanks for the warning.
Fearless-Brush-1908@reddit
I honestly think it’s a mix of hardware and software problems, because the freeze only happened once after. And it was when I was actively playing ghost of Tsushima and left my pc running for the night. So I think it’s because of an over exhaustion of the hardware plus corrupted or files also being responsible. Because I had way more crashes than this one before I reset my entire pc
WraithOfGluttony@reddit
Yeah I have no idea why mine started freezing, the only solution I was thinking of was the windows 10 update and when I upgraded to windows 11 it stopped doing those weird freezes, I haven't stopped playing on my pc as much as I did so if it would be from it's exhaustion then it would probably start doing the same thing again, so it most likely was a faulty windows 10 update, but yeah, the freezing thing can occur in many ways I suppose.
Busy-Hovercraft-8241@reddit
Was ram the issue
Solruil@reddit
When this happened to me it was a RAM issue as it didn’t happen with XMP. All I did was set the voltage to 1.4V on the bios manually, that seemed to fix the issue and it hasn’t freezed ever since
ZapScarlet@reddit
Hello! I'm having this issue and I'm pretty sure it's because of my RAM. Was the original voltage 1.35V and you rose it to 1.40V or did I get the numbers wrong? I'm trying that today. Thanks in advance
JackRadcliffe@reddit
Did you end up resolving it? I get frequent system lock ups these days as well and it's driving me nuts.
iYellRacialSlurs@reddit
Have you found any solution a year later? Same thing keeps happening to me now.
JackRadcliffe@reddit
It might have been a fluke, but disabling hardware acceleration in Microsoft edge browser seemed to stop my computer from locking up sp frequently. It sometimes still does, but once in a blue moon. It was happening almost always when watching YouTube videos at the time if I recall
Total-Rain2873@reddit
How to access bios?
PublicCabinet567@reddit
For anyone still experiencing this issue, try unplugging your drives. I asked a friend of mine who has a lot of experience with computers, and he said the problem was likely caused by the HDD. I tried unplugging it—I use a 256GB M.2 SSD and a 1TB HDD—and it seems to have solved the issue. He told me I just need to format the HDD, and if the problem returns, I might need to replace it.
Significant_House246@reddit
Just wanted to say for anyone else who's been googling this. After two months of trouble shooting I finally just tried a different CPU and the problem stopped. So maybe try a different CPU if you can.
kronosbit@reddit
Had to change everything basically until now, CPU is remaining piece. Started one year ago, changed motherboard. Stopped. Now a year later popped up again
Significant_House246@reddit
Yeah I had the same process. Replaced the motherboard that didn't fix it so I finally remembered I had an old CPU I could try. Got a replacement from Intel and haven't had any issues since.
G-Style1401@reddit
I had the exact same problem. My computer would freeze completely at random, and the only thing I could do was press the power button to shut it down.
After a lot of searching, I finally found a solution!
Apparently, since a certain update, a conflict has arisen when using a dual monitor setup.
This has caused some sort of "short circuit" on my HDMI port. It's not a real short circuit, but for some reason, this port triggers a system freeze.
I checked the HDMI port, the cable, and the monitor — nothing seems to be wrong with any of them. The issue only occurs when I use that specific HDMI port.
It might be something related to the graphics card, but all the other ports work just fine.
Solution: I connected both screens using the DisplayPort (DP) ports. Since then, I haven’t had a single issue!
kronosbit@reddit
Interesting I have one display port and the other hdmi
ThePiercerEffect@reddit
So far I've ussed an air duster and removed my rams and it sseems to be working fine, touch wood.

Just found the fix for my issue last night. There was a pci driver that was not auto updating for some reason. I would check all drivers for everything and just make sure they are up to date obvious thing but I overlooked it so maybe you might have too.
PYasonX@reddit
Hey silly question, how did you find a driver not auto updating? I checked device manager and don't see any yellow warning signs and no glaring warnings etc.
calebbaleb@reddit
Been running into the same problem for months now. I’ve done a fresh install of windows 10, run memtest to confirm my ram is ok, swapped psu’s, tried single stick of ram, etc.
5600x w/ 3070 FE, 16 gb ram, asrock x570 itx mobo, also in an nzxt h1 (though I swapped into an ATX case to see if it was related to thermals or nzxt’a pcie riser cable)
Super frustrating. Can’t reliably use this pc to work or to game. It’s been a glorified paperweight for months now and I can’t find any real answers
Rk9qa@reddit
Did you found solution ?
calebbaleb@reddit
Yes, sort of. I suspect it was an overheating problem. Swapped to a full size ATX case which has much better thermals, and fits a full size 280mm AIO.
I think the included aio in the nzxt h1 crapped out. It ran fine for about two years then gave me a lot of problems.
ThatNoobTho@reddit
That's pc gaming for you tbh. In my 6 years of owning computers, I've never had one that functioned flawlessly throughout its lifespan
calebbaleb@reddit
Amen to that lol
I’ve been a pc gamer for my whole life, and building pc’s for around 10 years. But there are a few thrulines or common solutions for a lot of the problems ya run into, so most troubleshooting is just working your way down the list of possible errors.
I’ve become the go-to informal IT for everyone I know now :(
ThatNoobTho@reddit
Ah damn you're way more experienced than me then. That's true but it's just a headache overall ngl.
Had random shutdowns back in 2019, replaced faulty power supply Had random game freezes in 2020, repasted cpu cooler Cpu started overheating again in 2024 so had to repaste again and check if the cooler was seated properly (it was) And then right now I'm getting random lockups which requires a hard reset get back, haven't found the solution yet. Also pc randomly decides not to wake up after going to sleep sometimes
calebbaleb@reddit
Sorry to hear that! You don’t need to read all of this, but your troubles might be somewhere around items 4 or 5. Tl;dr some common troubleshooting feedback loop tips from my experience.
Not that this necessarily applies to you, but in case anyone else comes across this thread. As with any repair, start simple and eliminate possible causes one by one. I cannot stress enough how important it is to make 1 change at a time when troubleshooting— it can be tempting to open the computer and try to make all possible changes at once, but you’ll only create new problems down the line, and won’t be able to eliminate old problems.
My usual diagnosis order of operations is something like this, though by no means is this extensive:
Determine if it’s hardware or software related— a good rule of thumb is if the computer is hard-crashing, i.e completely frozen, unresponsive, or power cycling— it’s probably hardware. If the program is crashing but you can still get back to desktop, get error codes etc. it’s possibly software. Since software tend to be more easily google-able, the rest of the list is for hardware. Issues with the operating system are also pretty annoying, but a fresh install of your OS is usually a safe way to fix most of those problems.
Check that all the connectors are properly seated— the number of times that “my computer won’t work!” Is solved by plugging it back in…. It’s astonishing. Internal and external connections— people often forget to turn the PSU on, or to plug the video connector into the GPU instead of Mobo, or forget to plug a sata power cable into a drive, etc.
Boot into bios, use whatever tools your bios has to check your hardware and make sure everything looks right— temps, memory timing, remove any overclocking, check boot config etc. kinda dependent on whatever issue you think you’re facing. If you can’t even get into OS and/or BIOS, Remove your ram sticks, then put one stick into the 1st slot, repeat bios investigation, boot back into OS. If that doesn’t work, reset CMOS per Mobo spec.
3a. If you can get into BIOS but not into OS, it’s probably a boot config issue— check that your boot drive is showing up, disable (or disconnect) all other boot options and force it to use your selected boot drive. If it’s not booting, swap the cables and see if that works, otherwise prepare a new boot drive if you can. Presumably you want to recover your data from your boot drive because most of us don’t have to foresight to keep our data off our boot drives… so get a second drive to create a new boot drive, and see if you can access your original drive’s data once you get back into OS.
3b. If you can’t get into BIOS at all, your hardware is not installed properly. Go back and fix all connections, reseat your CPU and remove everything that is non-essential. But if that doesn’t work your CPU or Mobo is likely damaged beyond repair.
4a. If your computer is randomly crashing/restarting/powering off during “standard” actions like web browsing, productivity, etc. (NOT more intense stuff like gaming), there’s a good chance your power supply is on its last legs.
4b. If you’re crashing when you launch a game, it could be PSU (pc is now trying to draw more power that PSU cannot provide, triggers a shutdown to protect itself) or it could be cooling (CPU is quickly getting too hot as workload increases, triggers shutdown). This is where I have often ended up, But it’s been a 50/50 split between failing power supply and failing cooler. If you have a water cooler, there’s a good chance that’s the culprit. There’s just more moving parts and points of failure. Try switching to an air cooler and see if that helps. If air cooling doesn’t do the trick, swap the PSU.
5a. If you use decent thermal paste and apply it correctly, it should last you a good while, a few years maybe. Anytime you take your CPU cooler off, though, you should clean and reapply thermal paste. Thermal paste can go bad in the tube, becoming dry and flaky or having liquid kinda separate from the paste.
5b. Depending on your cooler and cpu, there may be a bracket or mounting hardware that is actually preventing your cooler from making proper contact with the CPU. I swapped coolers and didn’t realize that the mounting bracket on the two coolers had a millimeter difference in the standoff screws. Thus, even with the screw fully tightened, and the cooler appearing to make good contact with the cpu/thermal paste, it actually wasn’t transferring heat efficiently. This can be really difficult to diagnose if you aren’t looking for it.
Anyway, enough ranting! Good luck!
ICGeneric@reddit
What if it freezes to a still frames when sitting idle but never when it is being used/mouse moved around? I cant leave this flarking thing alone for a minute before it shits itself but can play high intensity games for HOURS before I have any kind of issues at all. Also if I leave the PC idling with a game active it never crashes either.
gramme01@reddit
This is my exact issue. PC plays games but freezes within 2 mins if I’m not gaming.
ICGeneric@reddit
I fixed it by doing a frsh windows install. Turned out to be a windows update not going through and causing major issues
EndersR3ign@reddit
Did you find a solution to point 4?
ThatNoobTho@reddit
I reinstalled windows and that seemed to fix it

Lucky. My freezing persists even after a fresh OS on a different drive.

HERE'S WHAT WORKED FOR ME.... after about 2 - 3 months
I know this is necro..... but people are still posting and updating so for me it was my GPU extension cables.
I tried everything from various windows commands, refitting every cable in my PC plus components, updating everything, Temps and power draw seemed fine even up until the hard freezes, stress testing (OCCT, Furmark95, 3D Mark, Memtest86) , putting everything back to default (eg. no overclocking on anything at all), buying a new MOBO, PSU and CPU.
I know it seems like a small thing but if you have extension cables PLEASE do test your PSU ones directly to your GPU just to make sure, it doesn't require a lot of effort especially if your original PSU cables are long enough and could potentially save you a lot of money.
JRMiel@reddit
I have the same issue as you with almost the same config
Case: NZXT H1 V1
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060Ti
Motherboard: Asus Rog Strix B550i gaming
RAM: 16GB
OS: Window 11.
I have looked on all answers on this post. As well as deep search over the web.
I have done almost everything possible regarding my situation
Reinstall windows, done
Change the RAM, done
Perform multiple stress tests, done
Following CPU/GPU, done and temp followed everyday with MSI tool on taskbar
Cleaning computer, done
Installing new SSD, done
However, I cannot test PSU as part of NZXT build, I don't have any spare
Same goes for GPU and CPU.
I'm so so so close to switch to Apple Mac, fed up with those little issue. I want something that simply work
lawrencetito@reddit
Happenings to me too.
Just freezing and i have to restart it from a button i have on the case.
Only thing i've added is an USB hub.
No overclock at all, latest bios.
Dont know whats happening, anyhow i can cache the error from the windows event viewer?

this has just started happening to me every few days. i didn’t install any updates prior to it beginning, though i have updated since. i’m on windows 10 with a factory hp envy 700-ea, the only upgrades it’s received are a new wifi + bluetooth card and some antenna, installed over a year ago.
my pc is already pretty slow (it is a decade old), but it definitely has been feeling slower generally of late. that has mainly manifested in slower load times which is not the end of the world for me, but this new development is a pain in the ass.
the crash happens slowly, i can still move my cursor for about 15 seconds before the whole thing goes. i have managed (once) to get the computer to shut down by acting fast when the crash begins.
i’m going to attempt some of the fixes here and document the result in the hopes that it can help somebody else, or somebody can help me.

Putting in my comment in case someone comes across a similar issue. This comment is to update my process by doing as recommended in the comments. Will have specs below all updates.
Initial update: My PC has randomly frozen a few times starting today after a few hours or so of being on, never had an issue before. I leave my PC on when I work from home sometimes, letting just the wallpaper sit there because I like the vibe of my moving wallpapers, and I can quickly play a game during breaks. Originally I deleted and uninstalled a few larger games that I basically don’t touch. Figured it was maybe a RAM thing. That hasn’t seemed to work. At the moment of writing this, I’m letting task manager sit open while the PC runs to hopefully catch the “culprit” by monitoring what overloads my CPU, especially at the time of freezing if it happens to freeze again. Will update once it freezes again (or maybe it won’t and the problem is solved, hopefully).

How full is your hard drive? Your operating system will begin shutting down regularly and freezing a lot if you get close to around only 10% space left.
m4tic@reddit
Windows will run with 0% disk space free.. not very well, but an otherwise normally running system won't crash.
** To the single downvoter.. you don't make money from working in technology, do you?
kikazztknmz@reddit
I've been repairing computers and fixing OS and software issues for 30 years, but even if I hadn't, just googling if a full hard drive can cause system freeze and crashes gives you tons of affirmative answers. Working in "technology" is a very broad term btw.
m4tic@reddit
Same, 31yrs... can't count how many systems (Windows desktop and server OSes) people complain about that are just sitting there with 0% free disk space. No crashes... Windows, in my experience within my career, does not do anything (literally) if you fill the system partition.
Exchange server runs with 0% OS and mdb disk.. your database(s) will dismount but will be no headache if you have a DAG.
vcenter server likes to fill up the SEAT partition. It'll still run, but web frontend will be wonky until you fix it through PSC root/cli
same with ESXi, because the OS runs from memory, you will have no scratch space and it will just complain about logging. hopefully you dont have your VMs on the same datastore because they no worky
Zealousideal-Rain566@reddit
Will it fill up the Volkswagen and Audi partitions?

If you have 2 sticks of ram, have you tried removing one and swapping them? I just had a similar issue and currently it's just a single dead stick of ram (hopefully). I'll confirm tomorrow.
