How many MiG-15 planes are still flying today and where do they fly?

Photo (taken by me) of Lim-2 owned by Squadron Foundation in Poland.

I flew one in Czech Republic last week. The pilot was telling me there are only 2-3 air worthy, one in Poland, Czech and he wasn’t sure about the third.
Definitely worth the 30 minutes. Holy Shit.
GinnyJr@reddit
Kitchener Ontario? Waterloo warbirds

I am looking to buy a mig-15 and I don't know how challenging they are to fly. I am IFR certified and have 550 flight hours in a cessna 182 though, but I don't know if I can handle an old jet.
Arbuzek2000@reddit (OP)
That's really cool! I dont know much about how they handle in flight, but I hope you will succeed.

Poland and Russia
Arbuzek2000@reddit (OP)
I know that in Poland there is Squadron Foundation, but what demo or private MiG-15 fly in Russia?
Wide_Plate5175@reddit
Not sure, pretty sure I’ve seen them around at maks airshow once but migs are really big in russia, most of them are owned by a company that sells flights in them I think they are called “mig flug”

I am sure if you want to go really really fast, it is basically your only option, beside paying to suborbital flight.
I do not believe there is even any military planes that can go this fast today.
joesnopes@reddit
No. The MiG-15 was, I think, just subsonic. Lots of current military aircraft are faster: F-16, F-18, F-35, F-22, a bundle of MiGs and Sukhois, all the Mirage variants, a number of SAABs - perhaps even the J29 was faster.
GeologistOld1265@reddit
Did I mix it up with Mig23? May be.
joesnopes@reddit
We all get things wrong sometimes. :)
Beautiful_Bat8962@reddit
Can I quote you on this joe?
joesnopes@reddit
Absolutely! And it can happen to you too.
MaddingtonBear@reddit
There are about 15 registered ones remaining in the US. How many are airworthy at any given time is a different question. At least a couple may be parts planes only at this point.
Admirable_Dig6160@reddit
How do you tell it’s a 15? The wings? ITAP of a mig 17 last week that stopped at my FBO that looks almost identical outside the paint job.
bnzgfx@reddit
Yes, the wings have more sweep on the 17.
Arbuzek2000@reddit (OP)
For those who didn't understand, I meant some Demo Teams or private owners, but still thank y'all for informations you gave me.
on3day@reddit
As an addition; I think that the ones that do fly fly in the sky.

The Museo Nacional de Aeronáutica in Buenos Aires, Argentina has an airworthy MiG-15UTI (LV-X216). I will be visiting in November and they haven't yet replied to my email asking if it's scheduled to be flying at that time.
Saddam_UE@reddit
Here is good idea of how many are left in 2023/2024:

I think there was one at the dover Air show last month.
Phantom_sidewinder@reddit
I know that the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, CA has a MiG-15 that they fly sometimes. They had an aircraft show case a few months ago where they took it for a spin.

My dad was in the soviet army in '79 and he said these were obsolete then already. Were used for learning.
WizardMelcar@reddit
You say this like it should be a surprise. Mig15 is a Korean war Era fighter.
Clover2008@reddit
What the NATO designation for the MiG-15?
WizardMelcar@reddit
German word for bassoon.
Not to be confused with a bundle of stcks.
Or if you're under the age of 12 a guy person. Please note the different spelling. 1g vs 2.
PerformerPossible204@reddit
Well, I flew one about 10 years ago. MiG-15bis. Unless it's wrecked, at least one!
nbd9000@reddit
China has tons of them still active
jnhwdwd343@reddit
They made drones out of them, not even joking
StringerBell420@reddit
It wasn’t that long ago where you saw them in every issue of Aero Trader for a few 100k.
ChevTecGroup@reddit
Ebay for $35k in the 2000s.
David Tallichet imported squadrons of polish mig-17s and sold a bunch during his divorce
Careful-Bicycle@reddit
There is a warbird flight training school in Santa Fe New Mexico where you can actually do flight training in their MiG 15 and get type certified in it.
pavehawkfavehawk@reddit
Pretty sure north Korean is still the worlds largest operator
unlessyoumeantit@reddit
Before the war in Ukraine, I could see MiG-15s at any air shows in Poland.
not_so_subtle_now@reddit
When I was a kid my dad took me to an airshow at Edwards AFB in CA. I saw a red Mig-15 shooting around and it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen at the time. I also saw Chuck Yeager fly by and I remember an SR 71 absolutely hammering it at pretty low level right passed us.
It ignited a fascination with aviation in general, and I always have a special place in my heart for Korean war era fighters like the mig and the f86. They are so beautiful.
KacpAire@reddit
They still appear on almost all air shows in Poland
Terrible_Log3966@reddit
Polans has two now! (Technically Lim's)
zerbey@reddit
There's a number of them still flying in the US, you'll have to see if your local air show has them.
magnumfan89@reddit
Saw one fly (the Chinese verison) about a year ago at the thunder over mi airshow
LutherRaul@reddit
There’s one flying the uk airshow season
TyrannoNerdusRex@reddit
I don’t know the answer to the first question but as for the second, I’m confident that they fly in the air.
Terrible_Log3966@reddit
North Korea atill has them in active service afaik. Mainly two seaters as trainers.
Individual-Count6595@reddit
I’d guess that due to the merits of capitalism, somewhere in the West…
