Question About "USB 3.2 Gen 1 to USB 3.2 Gen 2 header adapter"
Posted by cj92183@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 65 comments
On PC part picker, the compatibility note says:
Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case has a front panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C port that can connect to the MSI X470 GAMING PRO ATX AM4 Motherboard USB 3.2 Gen 1 header. A separate USB 3.2 Gen 1 to USB 3.2 Gen 2 header adapter will be required.
Can someone explain what this means to me? And if possible provide a link to a " USB 3.2 Gen 1 to USB 3.2 Gen 2 header adapter." I'm quite confused.
Thank you!

My understanding is that it's trying to convey this:
1) Your case has built in USB ports on the front/top of the case
2) In order for those to work, you need to plug a cable from the case into the motherboard (this cable is pre-attached to the case)
3) The case uses a slightly newer version of the USB 3.2 standard than the motherboard. If you want to take advantage of the slightly better performance of that standard, you'll need a motherboard with a compatible plug
4) If you don't care about the slight performance boost, you're fine just plugging the cable from the case into the motherboard, and it'll default to the older standard. The USB ports will work, but they won't be as fast is if they could use the new standard.
Unless you're loading ultra-large files from the front USB port onto your hard drive, or trying to run software off a USB drive, this doesn't actually matter.
As an aside, when you're installing the OS, you should always use one of the USB ports attached directly to the motherboard, not one of the case ones.

does it work differently when it’s a USB 3.2 Gen 2 to USB 3.2 Gen 1 header adapter, or does it work the same way?

I get 2 of these notes about USB adapters:
Since I don't really care about the USB performance, I'll ignore the 2nd one. Could you explain the first one however? The parts are a Lian Li O11 Dynamic EVO and an Asus TUF GAMING B550-PLUS WIFI II. From what I have read on the internet I just lose the USB-C port and 2 other USB ports on the case itself. Is this true? And is it safe to just plug these headers into the mobo without any danger of frying stuff due to them not being compatible?
Limp_Ad_2912@reddit
Super late but I’m having this problem now. Did you just end up plugging them into the mobo with no issues? Thanks!
0_Nipa_0@reddit
I'm updating my rig next month, (you probably solved the issue already), but if others have the same problem: 1.) You can ignore the signs if you want, but your case's usb-c port won't probably work. (you can plug the USB 3.2 Gen 1 header normally) 2.) You can buy the two adapters so that your case's usb and usb-c ports work, but at lower speeds (usb 3.2 gen 1 will work the speed of 2.0 and usb 3.2 gen 2 will work the speed of gen 1). I'll link example adapters below:
https://www.amazon.com/LINKUP-Female-Motherboard-Compatible-Converter-USB-2-0-zu-3-0-Adapter/dp/B084D58HBP?th=1 (USB 2.0 to USB 3.2 Gen 1)
https://www.amazon.com/EZDIY-FAB-Internal-19-Pin-Header-Adapter/dp/B0B5D5GZX9?th=1 (USB 3.2 Gen 1 to USB 3.2 Gen 2 type-C)
(I'm really not 100% sure about anything I said because I haven't build mine yet so I'll see in a month :) )
Tigblu@reddit
Does the case already come with the USB 3.2 Gen 1 to USB 3.2 Gen 2 header adapter i ?

So your case has a front panel USB Type C port. To connect a front panel Type C port to your motherboard, your motherboard needs to have an internal Type C header. (USB 3.2 Gen 2 is essentially a Type C port)
Since that message is appearing, it seems your motherboard doesn't have an internal Type C header. PCPartPicker is telling you that if you want to use the front panel Type C header, you'll need an adapter to connect an internal Type-A port to the front panel Type C port.
Agitated_Emphasis810@reddit
im gonna route all my cables to the back anyways, so i wouldn't need any adapters? i also need a usb 2.0 to usb 3.2 gen 1 adapter, would i really need it if i won't use the front (meaning will the pc still boot?)
A-D-Rrox@reddit
Wild that I’m asking a whole 2 years later, but that essentially means I don’t “have to” get one. It will just be a necessity
