New motherboard install, but Windows PIN and internet aren’t working
Posted by NaughticalSextant@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 95 comments
So I installed a new motherboard into my PC—both were ROGs. The computer booted up, everything went smoothly, but Windows is saying that “Your PIN is no longer available” and I need to create another one. Alright cool.
So I go to create another one, and it says I need to be connected to the internet. So I say okay, but then it tells me I’m not connected. I have an Ethernet cord in the back of the computer and it’s flashing green with a solid orange color.
When I click on the little globe in the bottom right corner, all I see is airplane mode—I don’t get any options to connect to anything. How does a mobo swap mess with the internet like that? I’m at a loss.
deleted_by_reddit@reddit
I used a generic USB Wifi dongle to connect to the internet. Was detected at the login screen and I was able to connect to the internet to then set a new pin.
Seems like this, or a generic USB to Ethernet cable are your best bets for avoiding a headache.
Gazzi_DK@reddit
Why does it need to be USB? I have an ethernet cable connected to the ethernet port, but it doesnt detect?
gr33nshell@reddit
You likely didn't have a working Ethernet driver, creating the same issue as WiFi. I think it's hit or miss depending on windows version and lan controller model.
Smooth-Mongoose-8849@reddit
I know this post is a few months old now, but I encountered this issue today when building a new pc for a friend. I managed to find a pretty simple fix for it.
USB Tethering didn't work when I was at the home screen. Only when I opened the BIOS did it allow me to enable USB Tethering, and from there I could get connected.
Hope this helps anyone with this issue!
Salt_Magazine_749@reddit
NOTE- this method does not work with iPhone, but thankfully as mentioned else where you can use a USB to ethernet adapter.
Hateno_Village@reddit
Yeah, I’ve been trying to do it with iPhone for like an hour. It doesn’t work.
gr33nshell@reddit
What a crock of shit. Apple is so fucking ass.
Hateno_Village@reddit
If you’re still looking for a solution, an Ethernet to USB adapter worked for me. I was able to put in my pin and download the correct drivers. Everything else I tried was unsuccessful.
gr33nshell@reddit
Thanks for sharing that. I commented yesterday that I ended up sharing my laptop WiFi connection by running an Ethernet cable from laptop lan port to the lan port on problem pc. Sounds like the onboard lan wasn't working for a lot of people though, so you would still need an adapter like you mentioned.
I really did not want to move my PC to where my router is and then back, so this was easiest for me. Hopefully this thread has covered most of the solutions so far. Super helpful for how old it is. I'm not sure this is an intended security feature, especially since there is no guidance from MS. I have a feeling it would be a significant security change for them to "fix" it.

Replaced a dead motherboard and ran into the pin reset issue, spent several hours reading and trying various "fixes" off the windows support site, nothing worked. Found this post and tried it, worked on the first attempt.
Cashman9001@reddit
Dude you're a legend thanks for this one. I didn't think it'd work since ethernet was a bust.

Thank you so much!! This worked!
For anyone in the future, I didn't actually change anything in Bios. Just opened it, went into settings on my phone (Samsung S25 Ultra), turned on mobile hotspot with usb tethering, and finally rebooted my pc. It went to the windows screen and then after about 30 seconds said "Identifying" and finally "connected" to internet
Pilomont@reddit
How do you enable usb tethering? Is it automatic from Apple IPhone?
SparksHumbleAbode@reddit
Did you ever figure this out? :(
ItsRylannnnnnn@reddit
Did you?
Smooth-Mongoose-8849@reddit
You could give this a try.
On your iPhone:
Nonlann@reddit
Hey man I recently swapped out my mother board and the ram. No issues with it. Other than this pin deal with the security. I’ve attempted all of the steps above and nothing is really seeming to stick. I just cannot get an internet connection for the life of me.
Smooth-Mongoose-8849@reddit
I feel like a recent update to iOS has caused some issues with hot spotting to the point where even if you are having no issues with your pc and try to tether your iPhone, it doesn't work for some reason. The only thing I can suggest is; check your phone for an alert when you reach the home screen to enter your pin, you may need to enable trust for the device you're connected to.
Nonlann@reddit
What if I just get a new m.2 drive and just do a new install. Would that fix this issue?
TSwazz@reddit
Still works :)
Substantial-Wrap3038@reddit
Can this be with a USB-C connection, or does it have to be the old-school squared-off interface? And if so, does it need to be 2.0, 3.0…? Thanks, still hoping I can fix this!
TSwazz@reddit
I think it can be any, as long as it connects the iPhone to the pc. For example I have a 13 pro max and used a random usb to lightning cable
Substantial-Wrap3038@reddit
Hallelujah! It does indeed work with USB-C! And hey, EXTRA STEP: After you Exit and it automatically boots to your home screen, CHECK YOUR PHONE - It will ask you if TRUST THIS DEVICE? Tap Yes, praise Smooth-Mongoose-8849! It should work!
SparksHumbleAbode@reddit
I didn’t - I don’t think it’s possible to use an iPhone to Windows USB tethering. Are you having the being locked out of your account issue? I was able to fix it without wiping my PC!
CaindaX@reddit
Found this post on Google and it worked for me.
Including the part where it only worked from BIOS

Melon1830@reddit
Did you ever have any solution to this?
ABrawlPlayer@reddit
I had to create an administrator profile by doing some tricks so from the administrator profile I updated the drivers and it worked. I don't remember how to create the administrator profile from the lock screen but its possible
Melon1830@reddit
I was actually able to get the original solution to work, but thank you!
No-Fishing9462@reddit
How??
Melon1830@reddit
I sadly don't remember at this point
cloughwga@reddit
Thank you so much, this saved me
javamaster44@reddit
This doesnt work anymore, What worked for me Was instead just using a USB ethernet adapter!
Smooth-Mongoose-8849@reddit
For what it's worth, this may not have worked for you, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't work anymore full stop.
Unless you have a link to something that states that it doesn't work, it is still a method definitely worth trying.

Was USB tethering enabled in the BIOS or in the phone? Is it compatible with iPhones?
Smooth-Mongoose-8849@reddit
I can't speak for iPhones, I'm not familiar with them. No, USB tethering would be on your phone.
GkElite@reddit

You're a legend, m8. Saved me from having to reinstall Windows. I updated my BIOS which caused the Windows security PIN to no longer work. On top of that, the Ethernet drivers broke for some reason. Great idea with the USB tethering workaround. Thanks again!
Legionnairey1@reddit
You're a god among men.
gr33nshell@reddit
You can share your internet connection in Windows 10/11. Each version is slightly different per below. This is what I remember off of the top of my head, but you can search it easily.
WIN11: right click on the internet connected adapter->properties->sharing->enable(other option doesn't matter for temp sharing)->OK
WIN10:right click on the internet connected adapter->properties->sharing->enable->choose the adapter you want to share over.
I am on 11 but I just used a jumper from my notebook Ethernet to my locked PC Ethernet port and was able to connect to the internet since my notebook could connect over WiFi and then share that connection via its Ethernet port.
Obviously this wont work if your onboard LAN isn't working and/or you don't have a usb->Eth adapter.
RepulsiveTable2016@reddit
Still worked with Asus am5 Mobo, but not right away. I had to reboot twice and on the second time I could see the network was connected right away
Ok_Sympathy8059@reddit
If you have an Asus motherboard, when you get to the screen in setup that says "No internet connection found" Press Shift + F10 and it should prompt an armory crate download. If that does not work or you have another mobo you can try and that same process but in the command prompt type OOBE\BYPASSNRO and that should bypass the need to continue setup without network, allowing you to login and download the drivers
Hateno_Village@reddit
I get “oobe\bypassnro is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.”

Eternity_Studios@reddit
I know this was from a year ago, but if anyone is still trying to figure it out, I tried all these steps and it didn’t work for me, but since I already had an ethernet cable, I just ended up buying an ethernet to USB adapter and plugged that into my motherboardand I got Wi-Fi so I can make whatever changes I needed to and install the drivers. Can always buy one on Amazon and then return it later.
NaughticalSextant@reddit (OP)
What I ended up doing is downloading the drivers for the mobo on a USB from my work laptop and loaded them up—I never realized that mobos can’t connect out of the box and require some sort of software installation.
But this is an excellent alternative. Thanks!

Post is old but I’ll ad myself just in case, I found my solution for a X670 AORUS ELITE AX to be the different version of motherboard I guess, mine being the newest version V1.3
SaraGallegoM10@reddit

scaluch@reddit
I managed to fix this by using a USB to Ethernet adapter. It was detected and setup immediately. It allowed me to start the pin setup process.
SparksHumbleAbode@reddit
Do you by any chance understand why this process worked? I’m having the same issue and have exhausted every other option I have at my hands currently and may try this as a last ditch effort. If the issue is having no LAN driver and being unable to get one, how does the fact it’s plugged in from a USB change anything? Just trying to avoid wasting anymore time and money. :(
Gazzi_DK@reddit
Hey i am currently asking the same question since the problem has hit me aswell. Did you find an explanation or a fix for you?

Bump need help, I got the same problem after upgrading my Asus crosshair vii hero x470 to Asus rog dark hero x570. I need it solved asap, it says I'm connected online but it won't open. Side note I got hacked from someone online, who uses macid address /ip changer, he keeps targeting me, due to the fact I caught them in the act, mind you my Malware bytes and win defender didn't detect him on my network, he changed all administrative aspects to the point I couldn't access anything.
This all happened after a game of Mw2. Started on 11/29, whomever it was installed a fake AMD gpu software, I noticed this due to the fact my screen blinked and couldn't access Amd Adrenaline to change my resolution after. Well he noticed but I was playing along to make him think I didn't know anything about computer and software. Well as soon as I brought up VPN of my own and turned it on, it didn't kick him off, so I opened CCleaner and uninstalled recently upgraded programs and so on. And he turned off the pc when I opened (notepad)...
I typed in I know you see what I see, and your obviously phishing, and also using a overlay posed as my software for my gpu, just a heads up my uncle works in the FBI, and if you please politely disconnect from my network I won't pursue it further
PC shuts down, booted into safe mode, but this wasn't the typical safe mode, it was a well programmed safe mode with all the tools in it but it just made you go in circles every time you try to do a check disc in command prompt, you'd get a error. So my last resort was do a reset (keep my personal files).
I was desperate at the time and it didn't work out come to find out, it had a config somewhere installed in the system 32 folder, and it was set to previously all to run where it would just install all the previous drivers and so on. So I'm thinking of my head whoever this is is very very talented and I've never came across any of this since I've been on the computer. I'm 33 years old single, no kids and all I do is just work and play a few games on the pc.
I apologize for the long story but this is all within a week and a half. After downloading the windows ISO, I installed that and unplugged all my hard drives, but for some odd reason it kept installing the fake AMD software and it's like he hard coded it into my Microsoft Live account. Because this is how it all started was from Microsoft Live, the email and OneDrive software. Well come to find out he somehow flashed my graphics card bios and within the memory and stuff Within the GPU it would Auto install that software.
Well apparently it had just every single thing you could think of it installed over existing software programs and put it this way, it would just mere everything you did on that program it would watch everything you type, every website and so on. And within this fake AMD software cuz that's where it first started after the OneDrive incident. So I contacted Microsoft and apparently they don't do over the phone so hours of them technically doing nothing while they were connected to my PC cuz I was doing my best to remove any Trace of whatever he or she put on there. I then asked him is there anyone connected to my network after I literally wiped my OS hard drive clean and did a clean installation, he said no, I then open up administrative tools for Windows. I then pull up the firewall rules, and networking rules and so on. I then list this one specific username in my registry edit, I said well apparently he keeps somehow putting himself in my network when my router has a block on it where no new devices can even connect to it so he had to be just connecting directly to the IP and so on and this is after my IP address was changed when I contacted my isp.
Sorry for the read, but I'd post it for more help but I'm asking for help, and like minded people who enjoy pc gaming, and having a good time.

If anyone sees this post and feels theyre experiencing something similar: first of eat something and then go to sleep. Come back fully rested so you can actually take in the stuff you see on your screen and logically procces it or else it turns into paranoia. Windows is filled with weird file names and glitches and other stuff that can make it seem like youre the victim of some extremely complex hostile takeover not even the Pentagon has seen. But its not. This is what happens when bunch of shit breaks in Windows, probably because youre tinkering with system files like changing registry, blocking important systems in your firewall and disabling services that are needed. Example if you break Windows Update and processes that check certificates and licenses you will get a PC that acts like its remote controlled. These strange processes and user names are Windows Service profiles that probably started up to try to unfuck your self-sabotage. Just calm down and reset. Reset all your devices to a clean slate and let them be. Install a good antivirus if youd like to feel secure. Enable 2fa and change passwords just incase. Reset with a full harddrive wipe (cmd ”/clean all”) and start fresh. It will work. Unless youre some top secret spy or high official you are not target of these kinds of attacks.
csills89@reddit
Nah, here it is a year later. Found the issue. My email was leaked on a data breach, yes my MS account the @live domain. (was Hotmail). Anyways they were using SSO, so even if you changed your pass it wouldn't sign you out of old devices. But simple fix was to ask MS to please switch my domain. So my backup or reformat was useless. They've kept getting in with certificates within my settings and backups(within account user sync) through Powershell and WMI (using vm techniques to avoid detection). But yeh I see a year later why youd say that. Completely nuts lol.

Hi! I’m having this issue right here, I see op had a fix of putting his ssd into another computer to fix it. I don’t have the option to do that and am hoping that getting a wifi adapter would hopefully work, i don’t know if it will run with just basic windows 10 drivers. Any other ideas anyone?

Don't know if you're still trying to fix the issue but I found a solution. A very complicated solution but it works.
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2969-enable-disable-elevated-administrator-account-windows-10-a.html#option4
Basically you have to use a USB that has windows installed so you can bypass having to type in a password to access the command prompt. Once there you can make an administrator account and download your driver from there.
Oh and the option for that will be OPTION 5 on the page.
illmatiictwofour@reddit
HOLY FXXX, I am so thankful for the link you shared! I am troubleshooting my PC for constant crashing in WZ/MW3. I decided to switch to a spare GPU. I pre-downloaded the drivers for the replacement GPU and disabled ethernet adapters to make sure Windows didn't install GPU drivers upon next boot. Anyways, I figured I'd switch the CPU to a spare, along with my GPU, since I already had my case open. BIG mistake. When I booted, I was prompted to change my PIN for log-in; however, I was not able since the PIN change needed internet connection.
With the link you sent, I was able to create an Administrator account. Logged into that. Re-enabled my ethernet adapters. THEN I was able to reset my PIN. Thanks again!
