PC keeps losing internet connection but all other devices are okay

Since a few weeks ago, my desktop PC keeps losing wifi internet connection once or twice a day. The networking icon would suddenly say “Not connected” and any attempts to reconnect leads to a few seconds of “Checking network requirements” followed by a request for the security key. Upon entry, it would say “Verifying and connecting” followed by an endless loop of asking for the password and trying to reconnect.
The only way to get the connection back is to unplug the modem/router (combo) and plug it back in. This is fine but it’s very disruptive to all other users in the house to have the internet cut off solely to get my computer connected again and this happens twice a day. The PC also has no problems connecting to my phone’s wifi hotspot with no droppage in signal. Is there a solution to fix the signal dropping from my PC or at least a better way to reconnect to the internet without shutting it down for the entire home?
Specs:
- Windows 10
- CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10600K CPU @ 4.10GHz 4.10 GHz
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070
- PSU: ADATA XPG CORE Reactor 650Watt 80 Plus Gold Certified Fully Modular Power Supply
- Wifi adapter: intel wifi 6 ax200 160 mhz
Things I’ve tried:
- Forgetting the network and readding it
- Restarting the computer when the connection drops
- Updated the network adapter driver
- Updated windows
Things I’m suspecting:
- My modem/router combo is getting old and is having connection issues (but I don’t understand why it’s consistently only my PC that’s dropping)
- My PC wifi adapter is faulty (although it still connects fine to my mobile hotspot)
- There’s a mysterious setting for the router that I’m overlooking that’s messing up my PC connection
I’m going to continue to google solutions for this but if anybody can help me out with this issue in any way, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!.

It works with me most of the time otherwise you have problem with your wifi adapter.

What do you do if when you do the release step it says No Operation can be performed on WiFI while it has media disconnected
Essa_ea@reddit
It can't be executed on disconnected media. If you are using wifi make sure it's connected to a source.

This works like a charm even 4 years later reddit is so amazing for these kinds of stuff

I'm coming to your 2021 self from 2025 to let you know that this worked for me, thank you so much. My laptop just kept blipping in and out while trying to play games online for the past couple weeks, and this fixed it for me.

I'm happy that people are still finding this helpful 🙏
Sampsa96@reddit
Damn sadly this doesn't work and I have to return to a system restore point every 2 weeks...
Essa_ea@reddit
Tried uninstalling network driver and reinstall?
Sampsa96@reddit
Yeah I tried it. The only way to fix it is setting my computer to a previous system restore point. If it happens again I'm going to try to set my modem to factory settings.

I wish this solved my problem :(
Tornado_Hunter24@reddit
I know you’ve seen many comments by now, and thanks ALOT as this fixed it for me, but may I ask why?
What was the reason this helped, what was the issue? I had my pc for 5+ years, very new/mid/high end too, and only recently had this issue, what was the cause and why did the fix fix it?
Also during the ‘renew’ step my cable status was at ‘media > disconnected’ which was weird
Open-Beyond2142@reddit
Do you know how to fix it on windows 11?
Puzzleheaded_Ice8260@reddit
Hi, do you know what would work for windows 11. Having an absolute nightmare with the Internet dropping out every other minute on my desk top. Thank you
Tommy2Timess@reddit
3 years later but figured i'd input this info. So I did this remotely for a client and it worked wonders, however when doing ipconfig/release you lose connection. you can type in "ipconfig/release && ipconfig/renew" and you will get connection back without having the client type in the cmd.
Thanks for your help, and hope this helps someone down the road
Essa_ea@reddit
Glad it helped 🙌
Pianovania@reddit
I have no clue if you'll even see this but doing this has bricked my internet. It's giving me issues that a bunch of media is disconnected like ethernet 4 (I never had an ethernet cable) as well as "wireless LAN adaptor local Area Connection" 9 and 10. Maybe there's an issue with the way my PC is built? But it was fine before other than occasionally my internet dropping out on my PC but no other devices. Restarting my PC now displays that I have a wifi connection but I can't connect to anything and the troubleshooter is just telling me to plug in an ethernet cable (again, I don't have one and my router is across the house from my PC). I can't find any info online about this so this is a desperate last attempt by reaching out on a year+ old Reddit comment
Essa_ea@reddit
You tried the commands and bricked your internet? Do you have any virtual machine installed?
You might have issues with your network driver, maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling latest drivers.
Pianovania@reddit
It ended up fixing itself after a router/modem restart, but it took its sweet time (an hour+) and freaked me out. My anxiety definitely blew it out of proportion a bit but then again I've been faced with unusual tech problems before. On the plus side, after my wifi was done it's tantrum, the DNS flush plus router restart has solved my connection issues.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to me and others throughout the months though, hugely appreciated.
Sea-Significance-462@reddit
Thanks for the help
TheGiant406@reddit
It was probably an IP conflict. With DHCP enabled, a router or client reboot would assign new IP addresses and clear the conflict.
Marshboiii@reddit
3 years later, just wanna say this still works for win11, i been disconnecting all day, ethernet an wifi, no networks showing up, this happened around 10 times, then i tried this method going into the command prompt. and what do you know... haven't disconnected since in hours. Thanks.

Can you give guidance for windows 11 ?
Essa_ea@reddit
Yea basically you can use the same commands, just run cmd as admin.
vrpoljanin@reddit
Tnx, I did it now. On first internet look much faster while surfing than it was last 2 months. Will see if disconnect again
Essa_ea@reddit
Did it work for you?
vrpoljanin@reddit
For now, yes! Tnx. Will keep updated
Jaredbftball@reddit
Just ran into this issue and was able to fix it with these steps. The problem though is that it happened again a few weeks later. This solution still fixes it, but is there a way to prevent this from happening again?
Jaredbftball@reddit
Happened again today. Is there a longer term fix or do I just need to replace my WiFi adapter?

seviperfan@reddit
Didnt work for me :/ after the reset i still just get “cant connect to this network”
Essa_ea@reddit
Are you connecting via wifi?
seviperfan@reddit
Yes, ive been staying connected wirelessly for about 5-10 minutes before it disconnects me and i have to restart pc/repeat. My only guess is the card somehow faulty? But when i connect via mobile hotspot its good and doesnt disconnect…. Also if i speedtest for the shorttime my pc is connected, i get amazing speed results so its not slow just disconnects..
Essa_ea@reddit
Okay, did you try updating your wireless driver? Disable / enable? Uninstalling driver and reinstalling?
If not, download the driver first then reinstall it
seviperfan@reddit
Yes ive tried that :( also tried setting it to different bands (802ac stuff) and a bunch of other settings been at this for 3 weeks now 🥹 ive uninstalled drivers, reset routers/modems, and more
Essa_ea@reddit
How many devices connected to the router at once?
seviperfan@reddit
My phone and pc thats all :/ my nintendo switch maybe has the connection too but i havent used that in months?
Essa_ea@reddit
I see. Get a long ethernet cable if your router isnt very far and connect it directly. Also you can get one of those usb sticks wireless adapters. I use D-link and it works perfectly.
