Jet2 seats- is it worth paying to reserve for flight now available to online check-in?

Just booked a last minute jet2 holiday which departs in less than 28 days, so online check in is now available. Is there any point in paying to reserve seats for 4 of us with 2 young kids at this stage, or will we just get the same seat selection (for free) if we just do online check in now?

Update as of June 2025: recently checked in to 2 flights with approx 3 rows left (checked during booking as booked last minute)...took a punt and then we were actually seated together so saved on money. Apparently it's RyanAir and Wizz air to be cautious of as they seat completely at random. If you check in as soon as possible it's more likely you can be seated together of course.

We checked in first for a jet2 flight and I was seated with my daughter who’s 5. My 8 year old was sat on his own about 6 rows away in the middle seat as was our 12 year old. My husband was sat on the complete opposite end of the plane on his own so jet2 can be a bit of a pain too. We paid for seats and booked early this year 😂

They won’t let kids under 12 sit on their own. Here is their statement: If you're travelling with children, don't worry - we'll make sure passengers aged 2-12 sit close to an adult in your party.

I believe so, I know that they always try to sit everyone together , even if over aisles. However, on our flight out a family of 4 was split up. The mum with the boy about 2 were sat together at the front of the plane. The dad was sat in the window seat in front of us towards the back and their other boy who looked no older than 8 sat in the window seat on the other side of the plane 3 rows down. He was very upset and crying, luckily there was a big family next to the dad and the grandad swapped with the boy so he could sit with his dad.
Obviously it is completely your decision. I always book our seats. My son will be 8 the next time we go away and I know he wouldn't want to sit far away from us. It might also depend when you go, as we have to go in school holidays then planes are always full.
Sorry just realised you said Jet2, we went with easyJet but I think all carriers are the same.
Have a lovely holiday 😀

I would definitely suggest paying for seats if you are traveling with kids regardless of age and you know that they will not be able to sit alone.
We went away at Easter to the canaries, the plane was full both ways and both times people were asked to move to allow families with very young children and to sit together.

But I don't think jet2 will allow kids 8 or under to sit alone anyway, so feels like paying for no reason surely.

I always book seats with Jet2 when I book, as I want to be sure we're all together. If you wait until you check in, most seats will already be gone.
But yes, if you check in and are happy with what you're assigned at random, no need to pay more.
Jet2 just encourages very early check and also tries to upsell on seats when people book, so often there's not much choice this close to the fight anyway.

Depending on quite how young, they will never sit a young kid without a parent. So if you wanna cheap out you can either check in all 4 at once and see what's what or you can check in parent1/child1 then parent2/child2. Or you could check in parent1 and both kids and then pay for where parent 2 goes.
I have 3 hours ago got off a jet2 flight where we checked in mum/dad/young kid and my wife was sat on a different row to us two but we were sat together. I would say paying for all 4 is probably a mug's game

Kids are both aged 8 and under, which I think means jet2 would have to seat each kid next to 1 parent regardless? We don't mind being split as long as each kid is next to 1 of us adults. Sometimes better that way anyway to stop them arguing! 😂 Seems daft paying for it in that case as end outcome will be the same.

I’d pay for seats. Don’t pay for priority boarding though because so many people do that you end up queuing for longer those that haven’t and can just stroll on when the mob has gone through.

If you don't book seats there is no guarantee that you will be able to sit together... Depending on the age of your kids you might see that as an attractive proposition 😂

Check in now. Usually it gives you options to pay for seats in preferred sections, like at the front or exit row (which you won’t be allowed anyway with kids).
Even if you have to pay for seats, with kids I’d include that into the holiday budget as it’s not worth being separated.
