Yes, but the important part is the politicians. With the current party dynamics if someone says they put significant importance on the second amendment but votes democrat, they are lying to you or lying to themselves about the quality of the representation they selected.

There's virtually no federal level democrat politician who will break party lines on voting around anything to do with gun ownership, regulation, etc. Hell, like half the field of republicans don't defend gun rights if it's remotely inconvenient.

We can convince democrat voters all day long about the significance of gun ownership from the serious, to the practical, to giggle inducing fun range toys - but if the politicians don't listen to constituents through threat of being voted out (and many of them don't actually listen to their constituents on both sides of the aisle) nothing will change. And so long as they know people will vote party lines every major election and they can keep ideological opposition out of their own party races - being a gun owning democrat voter, specially in a democrat majority state, makes one merely a temporary gun owner.
