Picard’s commitment to justice inspires me and seems timely. You? (Example 2 of 2)

From The Measure of a Man:
PICARD: Your Honour, the courtroom is a crucible. In it we burn away irrelevancies until we are left with a pure product, the truth for all time. Now, sooner or later, this man or others like him will succeed in replicating Commander Data.
And the decision you reach here today will determine how we will regard this creation of our genius. It will reveal the kind of a people we are, what he is destined to be. It will reach far beyond this courtroom and this one android. It could significantly redefine the boundaries of personal liberty and freedom, expanding them for some, savagely curtailing them for others.
Are you prepared to condemn him and all who come after him to servitude and slavery?
Your Honour, Starfleet was founded to seek out new life. Well, there it sits. Waiting.
You wanted a chance to make law. Well, here it is. Make a good one.

Ha. Came back searching for this quote. All this time I thougth he was talking about burning the court down, which despite that we are still left with the purer product, the truth, indistructible.

Picard had such great speeches—Bravo to the writers and to Patrick Stewart

The character is the pinnacle of morality, ethics and empathy. Even in First Contact when his rage got the best of him, it only took a 5 minute confrontation to get him to reflect and see reason. He even corrects his mistakes graciously after insulting Warf. This is the person we all should strive to be.

Yeah 100%

TOS went recklessly. TNG went BOLDLY!

It speaks about the human condition, will forever be eternally relevant.

New star trek makes their characters TOO relatable. They feel like modern day humans, flying space ships. Which misses the point. Star trek is supposed to be future us, BETTER us. They're supposed to be better than us, because we're supposed to aspire to be them.

We need this type of wisdom as we move headstrong into a world where technology just mindlessly moves forward without forethought, direction, or regulation.

It's always timely.

You’re absolutely correct and I wish I had said that.

“Your Honour, Starfleet was founded to seek out new life. Well, there it sits. Waiting.”
That is such a great statement.

I just watched this episode last night. I LOVE a Star Trek court episode.

Nice! It’s a fun and inspiring way to review law and civics.

I like that he wasn't above a little dig at his friend the judge in his close!
onthenerdyside@reddit
It's an appeal to her ego and a call to action.

One of the things I like about that scene is that Picard's speech has kind of an awkward start, like he's still not quite sure what he's going to say or how to say it.

It feels like when I start making a speech in my D&D campaign and know I need to make a point, sort of what that point will be, but not quite how it will land.

I said godDAMN that boy can pontificate!

I always loved these kinds of episodes, that get really philosophical about what they're doing, and the relevance to us about what this show is about.

They don't write them like they used to.
