Some places do have the option to choose between Evri and Royal Mail which I appreciate. Royal Mail has its failures but I feel like their staff have more accountability.

If i had the choice of any courier, I'd probably pick Evri! They're the only courier that actually seems to bother putting the parcel in the shed as requested. Half the time DPD or Yodel refuse to deliver to a safe place, Royal Mail knock and run, and Amazon dump it at the back door when it's pissing it down!

Evri and Royal Mail are both great in my area. And for all people say it depends who you get with Evri, we rarely seem to have the same person deliver for them and I've still no complaints. Yodel is terrible though.

With Evri it depends on the person that delivers to you and the type of delivery. Our old Hermes lady was the best out of all delivery companies. As soon as she left it became the worst. Our old royal mail postie was amazing and the service after he left was poor but nothing compared to how terrible Evri are to deal with. If something goes wrong. You can't contact Evri at all. There is no way of speaking to the local hub like other companies. We had a little beer fridge made by a small company delivered by Evri. 3 were delivered broken, 7 never made their way out of the local depot. It took this small business 11 fridges before we received one. The 7 that disappeared I'm sure we're taken home by the warehouse workers. A little look on reddit/the news/companies house will show that they have a unusually high turnover of staff, recruit using unpaid trial shifts and have a blasé attitude towards right to work requirements. The fines they receive are eclipsed by their profits so they have no incentive to change.

Likewise, I know my local Evri lady well enough that we recognise each other in the street, and she’s always patient enough when knocking (there’s no safe place). Failing that, I can send and receive items using Evri from the local co-op 100m down the road seven days a week, from 7:00-22:00. Can’t do that with Royal Mail.

Yes, love our particular Evri lady. When she's on holiday she posts on the local FB group. People then know their packages will be drop-kicked over a distant side gate into someone else's pond, and hold off placing orders until she's back.

I would pay more to have the option to reliably collect from a locker or local shop with long opening hours. I live on my own and can't work from home, so I usually can't be in when deliveries arrive. Sometimes I can arrange a weekend delivery but then I have to Spend my weekend at home waiting for it. I keep ordering from Amazon because they have lockers that are across the road from my house and accessible 24/7. Other couriers have collection options but either ignore my requests or give me a "sorry no one was in" at whatever shop I have chosen.

Yea, I'll only buy something if it can be delivered with Royal Mail or DPD anything else isn't worth the risk. DHL just lost something I bought online, took 3 weeks of back and forth emails and calls for them to graciously offer me a refund.

If you split your.parcels to different couriers you will never get good rates from them as they need guaranteed quantities for discounts. Also, there's the chance you send it by the wrong courier and just upset them even more.

Yes, I would always pay more if it meant avoiding Evri. I assume most retailers don't bother because of the logistical implications on their end of separating different parcels for different services. Or, and this is purely speculative, if I were a courier service I'd offer retailers discounts for exclusivity arrangements and/or contracts that required x% of their postage to be done via me.

I'd choose Evri if I had the option. Our local lady is lovely, and she knows everyone well enough to know who's home, and who will take parcels in for their neighbours. I like being able to divert it to the little Tesco at the end of the road if I know I definitely won't be in too.

Hard agree, my Evri courier is fabulous, knows everyone nearby and where to leave parcels safely if I’m out. Even texts me sometimes if I’m not in and he thinks something looks expensive to check where I want it. Unlike some generic Amazon couriers who just leave stuff on my doorstep even in pouring rain (I have quite obvious “safe places” which are sheltered). It’s a shame that Evri have such a bad reputation, cos I will always choose them as my delivery option if I can. Guess it just comes down to how dedicated the local driver is.

Controversial opinion but I don't really care. I don't think the issue is the company but the people who work in your area for those companies. Sure how the company is managed is a contributing factor but not the main issue. For a while, evri was my preferred service because the guy who did deliveries for them in my area was great. Always knocked, left the parcels in my designated safe space. If he had a signature required parcel he'd leave his number on the slip. He was meant to hattempt delivery 3 days in a row and send back if it couldn't be delivered. I was going to be at work on all of the days so gave him a call and he offered to stop at my place before he started the rounds so he could catch me before I left for work as he only did morning shifts. Unfortunately for me, he decided to retire. So it's back to the unknown now. I've probably had issues with deliveries by all of the different companies at one point or another.

Our local Evri driver is as by the book as they come. They are the only delivery person who refuses to leave a parcel in my safe place as they deem it not safe enough. Personally, I prefer the companies people seem to think are shit as they aren't bothering to take the parcel back to the depot they are leaving it no matter what. So this means I actually still get it if I'm not home.

Parcel Force and their make a mild effort to get it to you in 2 days but cant be arsed to fucking do it are shit as well.

I’m the opposite and find Evri and Yodel are just pot luck for me. I love Royal Mail delivering my parcels because they arrive quickly, my posties are great and they’ve never lost a parcel for me. The cheaper ones above are fine if you have a good driver (which is rare). If the decent one suddenly disappears then it’s pure luck as to whether their replacement is competent or it’s some random scumbag who doesn’t seem to care whether he’s even delivered the parcel to the correct address or not.

I work for a company that sells things online. We actually refuse to use Evri just because we know how shit they are. They have offered us a cheaper quote than what we pay now but it’s not by enough to justify the increase we’d get in complaints and lost parcels. As for your idea that’s not realistically possible. With economies of scale the retailer gets better prices based on sending more parcels with a delivery company. If you’re splitting your orders between several different couriers then the postage cost for each parcel goes up. Also as much as you say you’re happy to pay extra most people are not. We sell far more items if we price it at £20 with free shipping than if we price it at £15 and then charge £4 for shipping. The customer would save more money the second way but seeing free shipping makes people way more likely to buy.

This wouldn't work. E-commerce companies agree prices with 3rd party shippers in advance of the order being placed. Each online seller would have to set up an order processing channel with each available courier. The setup up costs of a user being able to select a courier would be unfeasible, except for the highest value products.
