Gm doesn't really mind to see Ford using their designs in their trucks ? In that facelift Expedition, the front looks like GMC Yukon, the rear looks like Chevy Tahoe/Suburban.
I know Gm sharing Ford supply chains and gearboxes, but I don't think they now sharing their designers.
Ford is only doing that because GM has been outselling them so much in that category. Where I live pretty much any 3 row American SUV you see is a Yukon, Suburban, or an Escalade. If its not that, its a BMW X7 and occasionally a Grand Wagoneer. Ford really let themselves slip up, and the current Expedition is so expensive and very substandard in ride quality and engine for the price. I am shocked they took this long and I think GM pretty much has cornered that market at this point unless Ford really does something drastic.
I'm surprised GM is still at the top with the major lifter issues on their 5.3 and 6.2 V8 motors.
We are in the market for a 3rd row full size SUV again and I was thinking of getting the 2025 Tahoe (I've had a Tahoe and a Suburban) but there's no way with the lifter issue, so now I'm waiting to see what the 2025 Expedition is like and maybe wait until the 2025 Tahoe Diesel comes out and compare the two.
Honestly just or Suburban with the 3.0 diesel all the way and dont bother waiting for Ford. Ford is utterly incompetent because they keep trying to shove the ecoboost pos in all their offerings and soon will try the powerboost in the Expedition which blows up even more. You could also try the X7 with the B58 as another option unless it must be a true full size.
Honestly because the Chevrolets have intolerably bad interiors and feel drastically inferior to the GMC products. The only Chevrolet product I would touch
is the C8 Corvette. When I was looking for a half ton as my towing vehicle, I would not have even considered the Silverado as an acceptable option because of how bad it rode, felt, and frankly the name put me off.
The Sierra (especially the Denalis) are an order of magnitude better and so is the Yukon and Escalade. Keep in mind that is coming from a younger guy in his 30s who has zero brand loyalty or experience with the domestic brands and I just bought the half ton I liked best after driving them all.
I had an Expedition that was somewhere around $80,000 MSRP while my Maverick was at the dealer getting a recall done.
The first thing that I noticed once I opened the door is how much more substantial the whole thing felt than my cheap Maverick. To be expected for being 2X the price.
Then I took it over a speed bump and the entire thing started rattling. Got a good chuckle out of that.
Which furthers my belief that the Expedition lineup is too small. My MAX has a 131” wheelbase that still leaves me wish I had another foot or so of cargo room on the back with all 3 rows up. The f150 SuperCrew has a 145” or 157” depending on bed length. If the SuperCrew is the heart and soul of the F150 lineup, and therefore the company, why not build your largest SUV on those same tried and true chassis? Have the standard Expedition at 145” and the Max at 157” to better compete with the GM triplets for passenger and cargo volume.
I think they're also really protective of the F150, There's some design decisions with the Ranger, especially in the my Raptor that leads me to believe they purposely did some things to handicap it.
Not that the truck isn't great but there's some choices that makes me wonder..
tl'dr at the bottom.
Overall I'm still in love with it, But I'm only at 1500 Miles so it's still got the new on it.
The 3.0 is a blast in that truck and it carries its weight very well for a vehicle that weighs 5300 pounds.
I've owned an F150 Tremor (The 2014 one that was a single cab with the 3.5 Ecoboost) and a Ram 1500 Rebel Trim and a few Muscle/Pony Cars. I don't know if it's the Suspension or just overall how the Ranger was built but it handles a lot more like a Car than a Truck and the view out of the vehicle is much better than my Ram (Don't really remember the F150 all that well)
Admittedly this is my first 'Midsize' truck since the few years after High-School I was driving my parents old 2002 Nissan Frontier.
The Suspension performs as expected, I haven't had a chance to take on anything hardcore yet but I've bombed through a few fields and it glides as you'd think a Baja oriented truck would.
This is probably the first "Fully Optioned" out vehicle I've ever owned- the Full Screen GPS is nice and actually a little better than Android Auto's (Granted its not free after 3 years so,) It's routing is smart or just as smart as Android Auto/Waze's I tested both in Rush Hour Traffic and they were smart enough to get me around the hold ups.
The Seats are hands down the best seats I've ever had in a stock vehicle- But again I've never had basically full leather seats before in a vehicle either.
This is the First vehicle I've had with Lane Keep Assist and 'Smart?' Cruise Control that slows down automatically- While I don't care to use lane keep in day to day, I'll admit it's really nice when you're using cruise control and on the highway for an extended period.
Onto to the small nitpicks.
That Center Console sometimes locks or doesn't seem to start always and takes 5minutes to actually start? But there's a way you can soft reset/force start it I've found BUT I'm hoping there's a software update for it.
I appreciate the ACTUAL BUTTONS for Ambient Controls but I wish the Lockers were also buttons and not in the center console .
While I like the Material that's on the tops of the doors and dash I wonder how that's going to look 40 -60K miles later and a few years down the line vs keeping it all Plastic.
And finally here's my \*Tinfoil hat\* things I personally believe Ford did to sort of Handicap this truck vs the F150.
There's no AC Vents in the backseats which is strange because the Australian version and I believe the European version does- There are vents present but they are just under the Driver and Passenger Seats blowing straight back.
There's no Cooled Seats- Again I'm sure Ford would argue it was for cost but I just find it stranger there's no cooled seat option- though it does have heated seats at least for the 2 days a year it gets cold here
The BRONCO Raptor has the same Engine but 13 more HP and 10 more pounds of torque which I'm sure that's nothing on most days, BUT the Aussies are getting an easy 450+ out of them and Hennessey (If you can trust them) got 500 out of it which leads me to believe the 3.0 as a whole is being kept under that 450 which is what the Regular F150 Raptor has.
Tl'dr:
Truck is great and handles more like a car, Overall I'm in love with it but its not without its Ford hiccups and other strange design choices.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing. It does look like a great package overall from all the reviews I've watched.
Agree with you on the cooled seats and the on-screen buttons. Kind of strange decisions at that price point, especially since the Colorado ZR2 features both ventilated seats and physical buttons for the lockers. But...they don't offer physical controls for the lights, which arguably could be a bigger pain in the ass for some.
Anyway, exciting time in the midsize segment and you definitely have one of the sweetest trucks out there. Wishing you many more miles of fun!
Ford cannot do SUVs right honestly, the Expedition feels incredibly cheap and budget bin compared to the Yukon or the Escalades, its not even a contest. This is a hot take, but frankly the F150 even has not even shed its commuter car feel and interior. I drove the refreshed version of the Platinum and legit asked the dealer "so where is the change", and he couldn't tell me either.
The same stupid interior, same infotainment screen with the resolution of a gameboy, same bed flex, really wheezy turbo engine that feels straight out of a budget Toyota, and the ride quality was very substandard for such an expensive vehicle. They must bribe auto journalists and websites to be recommended so much. The Maverick and the GT500 are the only products they have I would honestly want and I wish people called them out on it more now that pickups are so strongly desired.
Ford doesn't really increase quality of anything as the price climbs. It's just...more stuff.
I think the EcoBoosts are mostly fine, but the interior can feel like a step down from other competitors in that top price range.
This is not even me being a fanboy either, this my first half ton truck and honestly the Ram Limited rode the best, but the supercruise is just too good especially because you can tow with it. The Ecoboost/Powerboost is OK, its not bad but its not good either. I wish Ford tried more in the half ton and SUV category, or else they will suffer the same fate that Toyota is starting to go through right now where that their new vehicles are not as reliable and they are coasting on their brand name.
Trust me I hate the duramax 3.0 and the 6.2L V8 too. None of the domestics are better than the other reliability wise. I like the B58 the most of the modern engines and its a shame BMW wont make a pickup. I really do despise the turbo lag in Ford's offerings, those engines are dogs and I learned the hard way about hybrids.
I never ever would want one in a vehicle I am towing. That X7 m60i was so bad and my friend's Tundra with the V6 hybrid grenaded itself trying to to a small boat easily in the towing weight.
Tell that to the 10r80 in my 2020 F-150 that is on its way out at 45k miles. Keep in mind it was rebuilt (new CDF drum and valve body) last fall at 34k miles.
I think it will be a mistake if Ford doesn’t offer the Powerboost engine on this new Expedition. Especially when last I checked I think around 30% of F-150 sales were for the Powerboost option.
I’d love because I could power a camper directly from the SUV AND it has the ability to function as a home backup generator. I am VERY surprised that the 7.2kw ProPower Onboard system isn’t standard on the Super Duty. Especially for the RV market, with a SuperDuty Chassis, theoretically you would have no need for an additional generator system. It would be integral with the truck.
It would probably sell better paired to the SUV than the truck, I remember seeing designers talk about minimizing the hybrid logo on the Maverick because the typical truck buyer doesn’t like hybrid powertrains.
I don’t think SUV buyers share that same sentiment, Jeeps and Toyotas for instance are mostly full/mild hybrids and they’re selling better than ever
I don't think it's that truck buyers don't like hybrids as much as humans in general are resistant to change. A hybrid setup is change and people are just stuck in their ways. People hated all over the ecoboost in 2010 when ford announced it. Now every manufacturer is making their own version of a turbo v6. Same displacement and all lol.
People are only buying hybrid jeeps because that's what's on the lots. They put them on the lots to meet emission standards. People who want jeeps will buy them regardless of the drivetrain.
The ability to run tools or power a house with the power boost seems to win guys over, outside of the V8 for life crowd. I would love a power boost 2.7 to replace my 18 F150 eventually.
I agree. I have a 2023 powerboost lariat. Wife has a 2013 expedition that we've owned since new. The mpg on the powerboost is about 10mpg more. I averages 24.7 on a 130 mile one way trip to our beach place and that included city driving down the beach. That's insane for a full size 4x4 truck. We would buy the expedition with the powerboost if given the option
The problem with an electric 3 row suv is that most people who purchase them haul families around. They run children to sporting events, school, vacation and also drive them to work. They rack up tons of miles. Imagine taking you're family on vacation with a full electric suv, loaded down with vacation shit. Then getting 190 miles of range and finding a charger. After finding a charger sitting 45 minutes to charge. Then find out charging isn't free. It's simply not practical. Till these things have better charging and 500+ miles if range they are just not going to cut it. That's why they can't give away the lightning right now. It's a cool concept and super tricked out. But it's not cutting it for every day driving.
You ever road-tripped with kids? Man, you want them to get out of the car every 2-3 hours or so to let off some steam. You aren't having kids piss in bottles and downing runners gel on some marathon cross-country trip.
And for everyday driving? I think 200+ miles of range is more than enough for the vast majority of people.
I have vacation homes. So yes I've road tripped with my kids. 200 miles of range ain't cutting it and I think if you poled most american families they would tell you the same. I drive 130 miles one way. Drive for 3 days and drive home and still have a half tank with my f150. I don't need to charge it or fill it up. I also don't need to stop for 45 minutes when we do stop. We stop. People piss or shit and we get back in the truck. Even if we get a sandwich it's 15 minutes tops.
If you are only considering reasons why an EV *won't* work for you, you probably weren't seriously considering one, anyways, so I don't know why you would reply to an EV-related comment.
You do what works for you, I'm not trying to change your mind. EVs work for me, regardless of your arguments.
I am doing me. I'm not anti ev. I have a hybrid. Yes you buy what works for you. I'm quite literally saying an ev will not work for me. It also won't work for most Americans. That's why the ford dealership up the road has an entire row of 2022/23 lightnings that they can't sell. Not because they are bad vehicles. But because they aren't practical for most people. Now a plug in hybrid? That's a completely different story.
They delayed it, they want to focus on a smaller EV platform that can result in a $25K small suv. With the price wars started by Tesla and MachE/Lightings selling slower than expected last year, Ford pushed out some plans by a few years.
Having an X5, the split tailgate is so fucking clutch. It really should be something standard for all SUVs. That and the ability to open just the glass portion on the back a la 3 series touring.
Flop down tailgates do put things a reach away, making one lean over to grab say a bag of mulch or the like. You know, bad lifting angles for the back and all that. So having an option to split open so one can stand more upright to lift stuff is hella cool.
Is it too much to ask for a traditional drop down function on top of the split? So a couple people can sit on the gate and dangle their legs when hanging out, or for extended loads to be supported when hanging out the back? Hell, Ford managed something like this in the early 70s with their station wagons, why not in this day and age?
The splitgate is great, but I would like to add that the 4Runner slide down window is still I think the best of all the tailgate designs, especially when the high trim models literally have a button to roll it down from the outside.
>That and the ability to open just the glass portion
I get why they don't have it much these days, but more SUVs and crossovers should go back to this. It was so handy on my Tribute (until the inevitable bolt rust).
I like the F-150-influenced grille. Not sold yet on the B, C, and D pillars all blacked out like a Lincoln. 24" wheels are gaudy and dysfunctional, but people like 'em.
I hate how modern pickups also have the shitty tasteless blinged out wheels too just like the European SUVs. I took my tires down in size on my towing vehicle despite the dealer protesting it would mess up the suspension and the supercruise. Turns out they were liars and it rides even better without an issue.
I feel the same way about 22"s or even 20"s on a car. I wouldn't want anything bigger than 18" on a full-size truck or 16, maybe 17" on a smaller vehicle. A small wheel with a dummy thicc sidewall is your first line of defense against potholes.
Front looks better, back looks like a Yukon. I don't like what they're doing with the interior, copying the same design philosophy as the new Lincoln SUV with that wraparound screen.
Split tail gate is great for access. My brother got a new bronco and the single door sidge hinge makes it borderline dangerous. The things is fuckin huge and the swing out gets some momentum if the wind catches it.
I'm waiting for a comeback of the [Excursion design](https://platform.cstatic-images.com/xlarge/in/v2/stock_photos/7e6e9020-a50e-4c16-98e3-d03a415f7d80/aaff2498-8947-42da-9125-e30e7b084373.png) combining the best of barn doors and a hatch. Just put them on double hinges so they swing around like a van.
