What happens if you make a mistake on your passport application?

I've just submitted applications for my sons' first passports. I did them last night and thought all was okay for a friend of mine (who meets the criteria) to complete the ID checks. On going through the data he spotted what appears to be an error in my wife's year of birth, it looks like incorrectly I put mine instead of hers. He put that the details weren't correct. I've now been asked to send through their ID to the passport office, so I'm just wondering if anyone knows what happens next. I can't see any clear advice on Gov.uk or the weird and wonderful Passport advice websites. Thanks in advance for any help!
