At what point did we get SO obsessed with these generation labels like Gen Z, Boomer etc?

You seem to be repeatedly misunderstanding me and it's not clear if it's deliberate so I'll have one last try. Imagine two people are born ten years apart. One is 18 years old during an economic boom, and enjoys a successful start to their career throughout their 20s. When the second turns 18, an economic crash happens, austerity is bought in and they have a very different experience throughout their 20s. The first person has some job security and although things get tougher for them, they're not part of the same cohort of young people with no prospects. Now imagine there's a third person who lives in another country with no economic boom or crash. These people may well fall into the same arbitrary "named generation", despite having little in common. So that's one criticism, the dates may or may not line up with impactful events and even when they do, they may not be global. Another complaint is that the generation lengths aren't actually a generation. Generation is an established word which people understand to mean "your father's generation, your grandfather's generation" and so on. Most people have children in their late 20s or 30s, but these labelled generations are shorter. That means these named generations are advancing faster than the actual human race and it's not clear to me why they do that. When I speak of cohorts of people, I'm talking about something more specific, such as "people who entered the workplace around the 2008 financial crisis" or "people who were teenagers in the middle east during the Arab uprisings". Probably 5-10 year groupings that might actually offer some insight.
