WGAF. no one buys a Tesla CT because of the supposed win over the 911. The target audience for this truck will buy it regardless. The purpose of the video was to create a buzz and get free PR. That’s exactly what you’re doing, keeping the buzz going and generating more PR.

One of the most sane takes in this entire thread is profoundly downvoted.
It's hilarious that we have so many Very Serious People arguing about whether a pickup truck *towing a car* actually beat or did not beat a sports car in a drag race. Nitpicking a few hundred milliseconds this way or that. Nitpicking trailer weight, nitpicking the transmission in the sports car, nitpicking every little thing.
And yet, the bigger picture still stands: this *pickup truck* is in the same straight-line performance class as a dedicated sports car. That is bonkers, and that is the whole point of this silly marketing exercise. Yes, the marketing exercise is silly, and yes, they fudged it. Get over it.
Having a bunch of uptight Real Engineers contribute a bunch of "well, ackshually" only amplifies the point that a pickup truck is this crazy fast in drag races.

The fact that this thing is within a couple of tenths (and is ahead out of the hole) is pretty damn impressive, so this "debunking" definitely isn't going to hurt.
Just a couple of years ago, the TRX cracking the 13 second barrier was pretty wild.

I mean even in this video CT won 2 1/8 races. The video Tesla made is real, they hid that it was to the 8th mile Then they said they would have won even to 1/4, they never tried but they simulated it. Clearly most of the time CT looses to the 1/4. But I can easily see a circumstances where CT wins to 1/4. The gap wasn’t that big. But again who cares, this is such a dumb race that will never happen in the real world

I like that there are folks dedicated to finding the the truth, but I’ve never wavered in my love for my 911 and my rolling eyes when forced to gaze upon the cyber “truck” —
genuinely asking. i've seen the video and ive seen elons tweet. but does anyone actually say it was a 1/4 mile race? i can definitely see how it is inferred by the video (show a drag race state the 1/4 mile time after) but can't help but to think people are overeating a tad bit. if there is an official statement i can understand the backlash for sure though.
In a nutshell, engineering explained covers a few key points:
-Teslas claim was never performed for safety reasons. They did 1/8 tests but not 1/4 miles. However they back up their claim with their math saying it can do it.
-engineering explained goes on to say that their claims are possible but under a few modifications, supported by speaking with a Tesla employee who was part of the tests. They changed the geometry of the trailer attached to the cyber truck and its load for optimization, and reduced the weight of the trailer.
None of these were part of the EE and motortrend replication.
One key thing. Tesla claimed it was for safety reasons. Sure… no problem. The problem I have is they modified the trailer so it wouldn’t be safe to do. Prime example is the tires. The stock tires on the trailer had a high enough speed rating to do the 1/4 mile run. They put even smaller, lighter tires that were only speed rated to 80 mph.
Plus, it was already a “super light” trailer to begin with; rated for only 2500 lbs, overloaded with a 3100 lb car on it. How much weight can be cut from an aluminum 900 lb trailer before it’s compromised? Let alone one that’s about 25% over capacity.
Point being that to “succeed”, they had to make modifications that made the test unsafe to perform. And then use that as an excuse to only do “half” the test.
It’d be like me claiming my 25 year old truck is quicker 0-60 mph than a Miata while hauling a Miata, loading a Miata on a jet ski trailer, beating it 0-30, and then claiming success because it’d be too dangerous to do 60mph with a Miata on a jet ski trailer.
