> “We will never build a Mustang that isn’t a Mustang. For instance, there will never be room for a small, two-row Ford SUV with a Mustang badge stuck on it. But could we explore other Mustang body forms – such as a four-door or similar? I believe we could, as long as these models possess all the performance and attitude of the original.”
Personally, I would love to see the Mustang sedan take the form of a RWD Lincoln sedan with the 5.0 V8 as the standard powertrain option.
Revive the Zephyr nameplate for it too.
Will make plainclothes cop cars easier to spot.
Pretty much every Crown Vic was either a cop or a taxi. The few others were typically driven by octogenarians.
My friend had the rare privately owned Crown Victoria, and it was amusing seeing everyone slow down as soon as they see him.
Should name as Falcon and LS for Lincoln. Crown Victoria is a BOF sedan and never intend as a sports sedan, but Ford Falcon and Lincoln LS were real sports sedans.
>Personally, I would love to see the Mustang sedan take the form of a RWD Lincoln sedan with the 5.0 V8 as the standard powertrain option.
I would love to see a Mark IX with Lincoln styling on the Mustang platform. Granted it'd be a good application for the HO Ecoboost too if they want to differentiate it a little more. Its just that 2 door luxury cars don't sell worth a shit.
If they make a 4 door car, RWD, V8 on the Mustang chassis and call it the Falcon I'm OK with it. Hell I'd be interested as hell in it. But don't call anything but a Mustang a Mustang, I don't get how manufacturers don't understand how much people hate that shit. Don't turn a product name into a brand name.
Would be awesome well executed niche 2 for Coupe vehicles, proper return of Cadillac Eldorado and Lincoln Mark IX LSC & a couple Designer Series editions
Man would I love to see a modern ElDorado! They have lots of great powertrain options in the pocket and Cadillac can build awesome stuff when they want to.
If your intent is to build a semi-sporty luxury car under Lincoln branding, the only logical choice is the Continental Mk IX. Lincoln built personal luxury sports coupes for 40-50 years under that branding.
I think a 4 door Mustang would be cool. It worked out for Dodge for two decades. It does baffle me Ford never reaches into their history to revive names more often. Like, idk how Thunderbird has still not been used for any EV.
It looks like a slick car. I'd drive it. But why can't they just call it a Thunderbird!? We've already suffered through the Mach-e. Stop fucking with the mustang!
Just stop calling everything a Mustang! Goddamn! Mach-E is a great name and one of the earliest Tesla competitors, but it got totally sandbagged by the dissonance of naming a crossover after the most important 2-door coupe in US history. Use some creativity, give it a cool name and have the balls to put out something that isn’t a transparent pander play. They’re turning into Disney with all these half-baked reboots
My biggest problem is that they were obviously desperate to attach it to a car that had name recognition. Instead of letting it stand on it's own 4 wheels.
No one's buying the Mach-E because it's a mustang. Shit every Mach-E Owner I've ever talked to has never even called it a Mustang. It's always called a Mach-E.
And here is the thing before Tesla did all of it's price cuts, the Mach-E was legitimately a good EV. And probably still is if you don't want to own a Tesla(Though Hyundai's options are probably better). It's an actual good car, and it doesn't need the name mustang for that. Ford wasn't confidant on the Mach-E and it shows with thier marketing.
And really at the end of the day calling it a Mustang Mach-E doesn't hurt the Ford Mustang. It's brand isn't diminished. But at the same time the Mach-E being called a mustang doesn't help it at all either. It's a net negative for it. People aren't buying it because it's called a mustang and people who might buy it but get pissed off at the name are now customers you have lost.
Personally I wouldn't be surprised if Ford Renames it during it's next generation.
Go to the mach-e sub, it’s nothing but old dudes bragging about how their “mustang” is faster 0-60 while having a car seat and groceries in their crossover. It’s embarrassing that they fell for the marketing trick.
Our local car meets turn around Mach-e owners when they try to come to mustang meetups
People did buy the Mach-e because of the Mustang brand name attachment though.
You’ve gotta remember that the average car buyer is much older than the average redditor and many of them were itching to get back into the “saddle” so to speak.
Nothing. Ford picked the name because they wanted it to resonate with young buyers. They already used the Maverick name 3 other times in Europe and Australia, one of which was on a pickup.
And the last Maverick model was in 2005–nearly 20 years ago—and was never one of their main brands. Mustangs have been in continuous production for 60 years and make up a solid portion of sales for Ford.
I think it's their longest-running nameplate after the F-Series. Not really counting Econoline because that name was quietly phased out c. 2000 and nobody in the '70s called them "E-Series".
It’s one of those names that they just slap on random things because it tests well and sounds fun. It’s been used on two rebadged Nissans and the European/Chinese version of the first gen Escape and the original Maverick coupe/sedan isn’t particularly well remembered
Ford f150 is the number one selling vehicle in America x years in a row* (because they have a million different variants but it's great marketing) so let's apply that to our new ev lineup!
I'll never forgive Ford for missing out on reviving the Thunderbird branding for the EVs in favor of M******. Thunderbird F-150... Thunderbird Mach-E... Thunderbird Maverick. Hell, Thunderbird Focus would intrigue me
Aston Martin V8 Cygnet - a Toyota iQ with a 4.7l v8 pumping out 430hp
AMC Pacer + Gremlin
Ford Capri Perana - mustang 5.0 in a capri body
SLK55 - not a hatch, but a tiny roadster w/ a V8
Wait, that's what was in the Cygnet? I had no idea. I thought it was such a strange move to sully their name on a shitty subcompact. Was it mid mounted? How did it fit?
It wasn't really a factory option. IIRC from Doug Demuro's video the owner basically told Aston Martin he wanted a V8 in his Cygnet. And they somehow fit it.
It would be like if I went to Ford and said "I want the Godzilla engine in a Ford Focus". They then would find someway to make it happen.
It was commissioned through Aston Martin's Q program, which is basically their coachbuilding service. For most of the multimillionaires using the services, it's a custom trim builder - paint matched to your mistress's eyes, petrified wood accents, etc. - but they'll basically build anything you ask for if you pay for it (including development and design). So every now and then you'll hear about an oligarch requesting something silly like this, or something crazy like the manual v12 [Aston Martin Victor](https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/aston-martin/victor).
The regular Cygnet had a 97-hp 1.3-liter inline-four. It was made to “comply” with brand emissions rules.
The v8 took Vantage S subframes and drivetrain and shoved them under a Cygnet
I actually owned a Ford Focus ZX5 RWD V8.
Obviously it wasn't stock, but man was that ever a quirky fun car.
Until it caught on fire.
Don't install your fuel pressure lines backwards people!
There's actually a kit to swap a V8 into a focus. Ford racing had a hand in developing it back in the day. It's still available from kugel components

Mustang HPP. Very limited numbers, but it uses the Spanish engine block from the RS. It is tuned a little different, but still has 330hp and pushes 20+lb of boost.
[Surely it hasn't been that long](https://www.autoweek.com/news/a2016331/ram-brand-created-gilles-lead-dodge-cars-and-fong-leaves-chrysler-shakeup/)
> Published: Oct 4, 2009
It has been that long. For whatever reason it feels like they only did that a couple years ago. I still haven't been able to completely kick the habit of calling them Dodge Ram despite knowing better. Similarly I often generically refer to everything under their umbrella as Chrysler despite them not being the owner of the week and they haven't been for at least 2 owners.
Some models [really were that.](https://www.mideast.ramtrucks.com/content/dam/cross-regional/emea/ramtrucks/en_crossregional/2018/ram-1200/static-configurator/trim/1200-st-Bright-White-Clear-Coat-Exterior-image.png.img.1440.png)
I mean…non-car enthusiasts don’t really care about the semantics of Dodge vs Ram. They’ve been calling it Dodge Ram for many years and it’s likely not going to change.
It also doesn’t help that Ram Trucks still use the old Dodge logo that has been on tens of millions of Dodge cars, trucks, and minivans since the 90’s. So when they see a modern Ram Truck, it immediately invokes “Dodge”.
Oh yes, I'm not faulting them; it was not a clean break. Especially since about that same time FCA decided every dealer was going to be all-in-one Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram (and Fiat sometimes). So there was never a standalone Ram Trucks dealer.
I don't mind that the newest Escape went full blob; its a good contrast against the Bronco Sport. The 3rd gen that was kind of blobby but still a little square in spots is my least favorite.
I would legit consider a 4 door electric mustang. But it would have to be like a poor mans taycan. Not a model 3 with pony badges on it. (And I own a model 3).
Same chassis, different cars. There's a big difference between a Falcon and [this abomination](https://www.carbodydesign.com/gallery/2013/09/design-history-ford-mustangs-that-never-were/8/).
Mechanically they are nearly identical, with the Fairmont it IS mechanically identical. And some versions of the LTD came with a 4 eye front end that is very close to the style of the Mustang.
This for [example](https://www.hemmings.com/stories/2022/04/25/1984-85-ford-ltd-lx-fox-body-mustang-profile-0422)
That thing's gross... Another good example of why a four door Mustang shouldn't exist. And even Ford had the sense not to call that thing a Mustang. Too bad they apparently lack that sense now.
I'd gladly take an ~'80 Fairmont wagon, though.
yessum. and to think gm planning to do very same thing to the Vette. I guess personally IDC anymore tho because for me the true and real Vette along with it's unique personality & it's soul died with the awesome C7. at least before it turned copy cat wanna be, it peaked at it's zenith and went out with a bang.
I just noticed that this type of branding is being done by Toyota now too. Apparently the Corolla is an entry level hatch back, hot hatch back, sedan, and suv/crossover.
As a new owner of MUSTANG Mach e GT I’m not complaining lol. I was surprised to see a Corolla Crossover yesterday and figured this type of sub branding may be a new trend
It's always been a thing with Toyota. The 4th gen 4Runner was sold as the Hilux Surf internationally, even when it wasn't actually based on the same platform as the Hilux pickup.
It’s the whole model as a sub brand that I think Range Rover started-RR, RR Sport, RR Evoque. I hate it. It’s just a way to recycle a design and parts share. I don’t hate the idea of a Mustang 2/4-dr. But that should be it. It shouldn’t be a crossover. I realize cars are not as popular as they were. But the car market has actually picked up the last two years. I think Ford could use a fwd model in between the compact and mid size market and it would be sufficient. Have it come in a sedan and hatchback form. Have it share the platform with Maverick/Bronco Sport to make it more cost effective. It its profitable enough you can do a littler rally inspired off road hatch Subaru won’t give us with the Crosstrek.
You need to calm down, it's just a sarcastic comment about a company that has no feelings. Everyone can see that it's been edited, everyone knows you can't hide edits, so there's no point in trying to hide it, therefore it's not even an attempt at hiding anything.
> “We will never build a Mustang that isn’t a Mustang. For instance, there will never be room for a small, two-row Ford SUV with a Mustang badge stuck on it.”
Ok so is that not exactly what the Mach E is?
Yeah, this nonsense is so illogical.
'We'll never build an EV mustang'.... But you already did... 'that's not really a mustang'... Correct, we all know that, so why TF did you put the mustang branding on it?!?!?!?
Enough is enough with this circle jerk nonsense.
If they want to build a four door mustang, that absolutely makes sense. Every other brand builds both two and four door versions of their four seat cars.

The only logical reasoning I’ve heard is the following: by calling it a mustang, it lowered the collective values for EPA fuel numbers. (Which is part of the reason dodge and Chevy discontinued their lineups)
I hate it too and think it’s ridiculous. But if that is the reasoning, I can at least understand the why behind it.
Not sure how that works exactly. Does the “lineup” include all cars the manufacturer makes in that year? I (possibly incorrectly) assumed it was separated into like trucks/SUVs/coupes or something like that. Thought maybe there was a loophole by calling the SUV a mustang, maybe that worked. but again, no idea what I’m talking about. Just guessing lol
Light trucks and cars and SUVs all get counted towards CAFE. For now super duty is exempt as are all 3/4 ton and up trucks for all manufacturers.
They called it a Mustang to try to give it cred and buzz and get people to buy it.
I kind of like the Ford Mach-E.
If I were to buy one, I’d absolutely have to remove all Mustang badging from it, though.
Unnecessarily lifted hatchback just isn’t a pony car to me. Ever

Getting that vaunted "light truck" status opens you up to lower CAFE targets--or alternatively, lets a high-MPG vehicle "shine" more by bringing up your fleet's average MPG, like the PT Cruiser did--but it doesn't exempt a vehicle from CAFE entirely.
I've been saying for years the Mustang Mach E is the worst missed opportunity in marketing and should have used the legacy naming convention Ford is known for and just called it the "Model E" and saved "Mach E" for an actual EV mustang if that's something they wanted to do.
Nothing is by accident... I'm sure they knew it was going to cause quite a media stir.... And as such more people watched and read reviews and ultimately got the desired result... People who would have otherwise not even bothered, now know "hey, this has nothing to do with a mustang but it's really really good"
But they didn't turn the Mustang into anything, it still exists as the Mustang. Mitsubishi killed the Eclipse and slapped the name on a totally unrelated car in an unrelated segment without even trying to connect it to enthusiasts. The Mach-E at least made a nominal attempt at sporty chassis tuning.
In *some* fairness to Farley, the Mustang Mach-E was technically introduced before he took over as CEO. However, he sure as hell didn’t rectify the mistake by simply dropping the Mustang moniker and simply calling it the Mach E. I wish the interviewer would have pressed him on that line of thinking.
Farley is the last reason I’m still a fan of Ford. It was nice hearing a CEO say they wanted to maintain their brand’s ethos and joined F1 and brought back Raptors and challenging other CEO’s to a track race in the Dark Horse.
But, he really did say to look out for 2025 for announcements that would make Ford a leader in the market space. I was hoping they’d plop a truck motor into the Maverick, or PHEV a Bronco, maybe bring back a sedan.
Now we are just going to have 4 mustangs and 1 of those is an actual mustang. I can’t say I’m not disappointed. It seems that Ford was just positioned better to weather the economic downturns with fleet vehicles and I’ve given their leadership wayyyy too much credit.
I have zero faith in Farley. When asked about entry level vehicles he said “get a certified used Ford.” After saying there was no profit in “commodity 2 row crossovers.” I took two things from that. 1. Plebeians don’t deserve nice things. 2. Unless there were profit margins like F150 it was considered a failure. That’s not a man with vision. No vision on how to build a customer base and no vision on how to build a full complete lineup that balances profits and volume in a balanced and sustainable way.
I think you missed my point. Like I said “balanced and sustainable.” What is profitable now may not be in 10 years. Look at the argument over sedans as an example. You need to be able to pivot. Toyota is benefiting from this. Ford and Dodge aren’t because they worked themselves into corners with suvs and evs.
At one point Farley was arguing against 2 row commodity crossovers because they aren’t profitable. What exactly would he have left? Large vehicles that would have a hardtime meeting EPA standards or they would morph into $100k EVs.
They can't hear their own thoughts over the sound of money dropping in from F150 sales.
Ford and GM are what Toyota was 10 years ago but without the reliability. It's clear the people in charge are not enthusiasts.
>It's clear the people in charge are not enthusiasts.
That's a good thing. Car enthusiasts would make horrible all-around decision makers for profitability at automotive companies.
When enthusiasts have a strong say in the process, you get good cars because no one who loves cars is going to sign-off on a turd full of marketing gimmicks. They'll want the car to make sense and feel good for whatever it's purpose is. And good cars turn into good profits.
Ford and GM have always been bad about putting low effort into vehicles. Like, if it's not a Mustang, Corvette, or truck, you know it's gonna be lackluster from them. But that's not the case with other companies. Toyota's main lineup all feels good to drive. Honda Civic is still great even if it's mundane. People can tell when a company puts some heart into the cars and when they don't.
You certainly don’t get the Raptor made by bean counters and suits. And look how important it is to the brand. Imagine what the ST or RS line could have been if Ford actually improved the Focus (the damn transmission) and Fusion, those were solid starts to vehicles that provided profit. But not enough of a profit. Note to Ford not every car can be the F150.
I disagree. I thought Alan Mullally was more in line with an enthusiast and we got some great cars that are the part basis of Fords business today. The Raptor for example was created under him. I would also argue that some of Fords beat sales numbers for cars were under him ie Focus-ST and RS and Fusion. Ford’s stock went up those years. Just because Ford can make more profit on F150 is fine but to say those years were a total failure is incorrect. Ford also had a larger market share then too. Their business priorities changed. I don’t think a company lasts long doing either approach for too long. It worked for Toyota because they still kept up quality and reliability and worked on things in the background like hybrids. What exactly is Ford perfecting? I haven’t heard of any new ecoboosts development, no hybrids, I guess EVs but surely quality is a disaster.
The Mustang Mach E was unveiled in November 2019 with the attachment to the Mustang moniker and everything. Farley didn’t become CEO until October 2020, almost an entire year later.
It could have been Hackett that wanted that. The dude was so horrible for Ford I am not sure how he lasted as long as he did with all the questionable choices. I understand Mark Fields wasn’t great as CEO and was probably better in the role he served before, but Hackett literally hacked all of the good out of Ford.
It seems even more weird to me they introduced the Mustang Mach E with its name then discontinued the Edge. A two-row crossover with decent name recognition. If they just made the Mach E the next gen Edge it would have been seamless
'Falcon Mach E'
Why ford didn't you do this!! Your sales would have been just as good. You could even have called it a mustang in China! But now the name is sullied.
I won't get into whether the Mach-E is a Mustang or not, but how does its very existence affect the Mustang coupe in any way, shape, or form? It's not like they made the Mach-E to replace the original.

Curious what you think it is, if not a crossover SUV
Give it a chance. I heard all those funny comments already in Germany years ago as Porsche announced the Panamera a 4 door sports car. And now, seems to be they are pretty popular.
Here's the thing. Before the mach e I heard a lot of people say the wanted a 4 door mustang. Specifically as a sedan. What we got was the mach e which is not what any of the enthusiasts wanted.
If they made an actual 4 door mustang people would be there for it but the real question is how many? Would it sell outside of the enthusiast crowd at all?
I think a 4 door mustang would sell decently well. If they nailed the styling, and made it spacious enough in the rear seats, I think it could appeal to a lot of non enthusiasts.
The Charger was popular with both enthusiasts and non enthusiasts alike.
True. And really it wouldn't be too hard to put compete the Charger. Since it's not going to be made for a year or something like that and then it's going to have an I6. If a 4 door mustang was sold with a V8 it'd probably be competitive against the new charger.
Id love to see a Lincoln variant go up against the Lexus IS. Lincoln is in desperate need of some excitement. It’s not going to come from crossovers. Their lineup already looks nice but the market of crossovers is so saturated it’s hard to make exciting headlines.
Oh dang yeah. If FMC threw some performance models Lincoln's way that that would be awesome. And yeah especially to compete with some of the other luxury performance vehicles like Lexus and Mercedes.
I don’t think a RWD 4-door pony/muscle car is all that niche. It was almost the entirety of one brands portfolio for two decades (Dodge). People just got tired of those because they were 15 year old platforms with poor reliability. Idk if it necessarily has to be a Mustang but the basic premise I think people would buy.
Which is probably why you do it you just don’t tie it to the Mustang. I think the Mustang is like Wrangler. You just can’t change it. Idk what the size of the Mustang is and if it would be considered a midsize or full size sedan but maybe use a different name. Maybe a sedan and sport wagon like RS6 could be done. Call it Torino (sedan) and Gran Torino (wagon) and use the Explorer platform.
Such a baffling move considering how well the Civic. Corolla, Elantra and Sentra are doing. That class of vehicle just requires some reliability the Focus just lost because of the 💩transmission. I had one and everything else about that car was great. I can see why they don’t offer a midsize car (even though the Fusion was great). But Ford should easily make a case for a Focus. Size it between the small and midsize so you have a space all to yourself. Offer sedan and hatchback and a lifted variation like a Crosstrek. I think it would be a hit. I don’t see why they couldn’t use the Bronco Sport/Maverick Platform.
It didn’t make sense to get rid of every car (sans Mustang) anyways. It was strictly a for profits move but the day was always going to come where the market would be saturated when the box you worked yourself into was the F150 and 3-row midsize crossover. Which is where Ford was headed. Toyota proved you need a range of products. You also need a vehicle that’s actually entry level to introduce your brand to young customers, everyone knows this even tech (Apple has perfected this). While I think this makes more sense than the Mach E did as a Mustang they still need a fwd, fuel efficient sedan and hatchback.
I don't know why people are still convinced at this point Ford gives any semblance of a shit about enthusiasts or sports cars. If the Mustang didn't have the heritage that it did it would be gone yesterday. They have milked the same platform since 2015 and haven't done the things people asked for like putting the Tremec in the regular cars.
Not to mention the fact they've starting whoring out the nameplate. Mazda and Porsche don't have to do that with their sports cars to keep them relevant. Go compare Late 90's Early 00's ford or 13-18 Ford when Ford Performance was at it's peak to current Ford and it's an absolute joke.
What's all the fuss about this sacred, iconic Ford Mustang branding?
Aren't we talking about the cheeky re-skin/rebadge job that Ford threw together in order to convince teenage boomers to buy a two-door Ford Falcon?
And then for the second generation they stuck the badge on a Pinto, yeah.
I'll never understand the fuss about this. I get people occasionally telling me my car isn't a Mustang. Like, okay? Mustang is in the name but go off I guess. It's fast and fun to drive and I have a backseat that I can actually use, good enough for me.
I'm sure it's a great car, but man I just wish it wasn't called a Mustang. A Mustang (even the Mustang II) has always been a two door coupe. A Mach-E isn't that, it's a 4 door CUV like every other car on the road.
But it hasn't always been a coupe, there's been a convertible version for ages and the second generation was a hatchback. For decades the Mustang was whatever Ford felt like rebadging as a Mustang, it wasn't until the late nineties that it even got a dedicated platform. It's had different engine sizes, different levels of performance, and different body styles. The only thing that's been consistent about the Mustang through its entire life is the name. That and the fact that it's been a two door but given the article we're commenting under even that's not set in stone and I have a funny feeling that the "it's not a Mustang" crowd will be strangely quiet if that does come to pass.
Look, you're entitled to your opinion. You think my car shouldn't be a Mustang, fine, you're allowed to feel that way. But there's basically no line where you can say "this is a Mustang and that isn't" that doesn't get arbitrary to the point of silliness. It's got a pony badge on it and it goes like stink. What else really matters?
Ford admits defeat and changes name of all cars to mustang. Now you go to the mustang dealer and get your:
Mustang Focus: 4 door hatch car with Mustang looks
Mustang XL : 4 door mustang
Mustang OG : self explanatory
Mustang convertible
Mustang VAN (now called the stable) : the current transit van with a mustang face
Mustang EV : that forgotten one they just put out
Mustang cross : a ford escape with a facelift
Mustang explorer: large family SUV
Bronco
Lone Ranger : a Mustang truck
F1M- a Mustang face glued on an F-150
As an owner of a chevy ss sedan for almost 10 years, I'd be all over a rwd 5.0 sedan. A falcon would be incredible. I also would like to see a lincoln variant. I have never ordered a car before but I would order that. But don't just put the motor in there, mag ride, active exhaust, and good weight distribution and handling.
Other than the insane amount of double-speak coming from Farley/Ford, I actually find this article pretty exciting. A hybrid and/or 4 door Mustang in the future would be amazing. Also the focus on lowering weight (lol we’ll see about that) and offering a bunch of different variants like the 911 is a neat idea.
Assuming literally anything from this article is true I’d never buy anything else lol.
Man these days the Mustang isn't even a heavy car. The Mustang is 3500-3900 lbs depending on the trim level. A BMW M4 is 3800 to 4300 lbs. EVs like the Porsche Taycan are even heavier, at 4800 to 5100 lbs.
Yeah I wasn’t saying the Mustang is super heavy now. I was just saying that I doubt that weight will be getting any/much lower when in the same article they’re talking about hybridization and adding 2 more doors lol.
Article just seems all over the place is all I’m saying.
I didn’t get a rwd mustang bc I can only have one car and don’t have space for winter tires.
Putting hub motors in addition to the ICE power plant would give it a major performance boost, especially for the EcoBoost with turbo lag.
A lot of people give up sports cars when they have kids if they can’t afford an extra car.
Yeah, I mean there are hub motors that are brakes that weigh the same amount as a wheel brake combo, so combine that with an engine and regen brakes in the rear and you’ve got, well for stop and go traffic it wouldn’t use any energy, but if you got the EcoBoost there would be no turbo lag bc the hub motors would pick right up.
I didn’t get one bc even the ford service person was like it’s not good in the snow, he said it made more torque than his fox body 5.0, so I’d def need winter tires I didn’t have space for.
I was bummed bc heated and cooled seats and CarPlay with 300hp rwd manual sounded great, I had mk1 Miata with snow tires but that was 142ish? Also not direct injection or variable anything so less torque and less of a torque curve.
Ie, it was hard to lose traction with snows or summer tires, I’m sure with 300hp you would need to be really careful, plus the Miata had 14” wheels so you could fit all four in the car, not the case with 17-18” wheels. They’d be heavy and expensive.
If it works out to be something like the 8 Series GC, that could be a really handsome sedan.
I agree with another comment here, though, that Falcon or Galaxie would be a better choice for a new performance sedan built along the lines of the Mustang. There are good nameplates in Ford's history, no reason to call everything a Mustang.
branding the Mach-E as a Mustang was really stupid. It should have just been another car altogether, or even just call it the Mach E with design cues to the Mach 3 and that would have been fine. Now they insists on screwing this up even further.
Ford f150 is the number one selling vehicle in America x years in a row* (because they have a million different variants but it's great marketing) so let's apply that to our ev lineup... Mustang is back, baby! Except, no one considers a 4 door crossover a Mustang, not even us. But marketing!
I'll never forgive Ford for missing out on reviving the Thunderbird branding for the EVs in favor of the pony. Thunderbird Mach-E sounds a million times more sense. Hell, use it as a variant branding: Ford F-150 Thunderbird, Ford Maverick Thunderbird, or even Ford Focus Thunderbird would serve the purpose for clear branding. But noooo they decided Lightning as a variant name because what a surprise Mustang doesn't make sense to even their loyal customers. Farley needs to clean out the boomers in the C suite from making these antiquated marketing decisions.
Imma be real with you. Ford can call it whatever they want. If they offer a 4 door sports sedan that isn’t that shitty Taurus I’m parking it right next to my 350. A 4door mustang would be sick. A wagon would have me throwing money at a preorder.
Okay, it sounds like we would've Mustang sedan in the future, and diehard Mustang fans are now yelling again.
But, if we open the history book, Mustang sedan wasn't a new idea in today, [it was already happened in 1964 when first gen released](https://www.classiccarstodayonline.com/article-guide-by-pictures/ford-mustangs-that-never-were-1965-four-door-mustang/). However, some reasons Ford never make a Mustang sedan in production, and more people forget its existence by time. Farly just brings back this concept just like Corvette done in mid-engine, but he wants Mustang in more practical, not more sporty.
Ford has so many great names sitting in the wings: Falcon, (Gran) Torino, Ranchero, Fairlane, Galaxie, LTD (Crown Vic), Thunderbird… but no let’s call it a Mustang.
Personally I think a Mustang based EV sedan with a revived Gran Torino name would be sick
Bold Claim To Say "We Will Never Make An Electric Mustang." They already made the mach-e because the market wanted it and if hypothetically, the muscle car demographics wants an all electric mustang, Ford will make it.
Besides the point, this is a good and clever decision to possibly take away dodge's market. Hopefully, they give the the 4 door mustang a liftback or fastback since many customers aren't into sedans with notchback designs.
>A four-door Ford Mustang could enter into competition with the Dodge Charger, which will be offered in as a coupe and a sedan in both ICE and EV forms.
Strictly speaking, the new Charger is a liftback whether it has 2 or 4 doors.
