Do transparent license plate cover s really prevent toll and speed cameras from catching the license plate?

I think it's interesting that the rules for this sub don't include asking/ advising about illegal shit.
Because obscuring your plate is illegal in every state, province, and country that I am aware of.
sp0rkeh93@reddit
🤓👆Um excuse me, mods? Shouldn’t it be against the rules to talk about this shits pants uncontrollably

Oh boy you are fun at parties…. Toll roads are are theft by our government. No voters ever voted on and passed to allow toll roads.
CardiologistOk6547@reddit
And you've never voted for basic maintenance or improvements to the street in front of your house. But you use it, don't you? Or is it just your mom when she goes to get you snacks?
Quick_Lavishness_689@reddit
I already pay hundreds in taxes per month and don’t think the government deserves to charge me to drive on a road that’s already paid off.
CardiologistOk6547@reddit
Tell me that you don't know what road maintenance is without saying, "I don't know what road maintenance is."
Paying off a toll road is only part of what you're paying for.
Eastern_Actuator_200@reddit
The biggest freeway in Northern VA is privately owned by a bunch of swampy big wigs and they charge like $6 to use it and like $20 for the express lanes.
Quick_Lavishness_689@reddit
That’s what I pay taxes for.
CardiologistOk6547@reddit
Every road does have a toll. It's called the fuel tax paid on every gallon purchased for road use. And toll roads are generally better maintained and receive frequent updates because there is more money available.
I get it. You want to announce your social outrage about The Evil Government. But you shouldn't be ignorant about the subject. I guess you should have paid a little better attention in school instead of worrying about who was popular.
Quick_Lavishness_689@reddit
So every road has a toll… except it’s not a toll, it’s a tax. Followed by an insult. Great point bud keep it up.
WiebeHall@reddit
If you can read the numbers with your eyes, you’re not obscuring it. However, I have doubt that you can throw enough infrared light to blind a camera.

You're looking for something like this: https://images.offerup.com/X_kYrIyj2xvN-bPUDkgiljzzuy4=/720x717/0571/05715bd7620644ccbf6c1d9ab22f1d3d.jpg

Looks like a cheap retail gimmick. If it’s obstructed when you look at it, it’s not gonna pass.
NCSUGrad2012@reddit
That has to be illegal though
SirCarboy@reddit
Yes. But the idea behind the really well designed ones is that a cop in a cruiser behind you wouldn't notice anything amiss - the plate is clear. But the fixed camera mounted higher and off the side of the road would get an obscured view.
Fantastic_Hour_2134@reddit
No. They don’t. Donut media made a good video about this
KnoWanUKnow2@reddit
Heck, Mythbusters did an episode about it back in like 2008. https://youtu.be/hiaCKFKPTqo?t=1031
So far as I can tell the plate obscurers haven't gotten any better, but the speed cameras have,
WiebeHall@reddit
You might have to manufacture it yourself

It can yes. I’ve tested this thoroughly. In nj their toll cameras couldn’t even capture my plate. I came up accidentally to an ezpass lane. They had the thing marked something horrid. I was an honest person though and waited for someone to come over to me. I offered to reverse and pay as running toll wasn’t my desire. The guy got really vile and was intentionally a jerk. He came out and said, “ go ahead and go it’s too late now you’ll get your ticket in the mail.” I was livid to think that even stopping at the booth not blowing it he was so rude. For no viable reason I said back we’ll see about that ticket. I had a super protector plate cover on that car. Needless to say 15 yrs later I have no summons from the nj turnpike. Now to a different part of the country. I crossed a bridge from Kentucky into Indiana. A known toll bridge. I was mailed a bill still a month later. So either one of two things the technology has advanced which I know to a degree it has. Some camera systems now have full time video backup out more straight on so they can reach out to that if the initial image is blurry to send a summons. I’m guessing this is what happened on that bridge just a newer system. So will it stop all cameras no. But it surely can mess with many of them. Over time I was going into Canada from USA with one on. The customs agent for Canada had to get out of her booth and look at my plate physically because even those techy cameras at customs couldn’t read my plate. Ontack used to make such covers obviously good ones for their time. They have since went out of buisness. And discontinued the super protector plate covers. Other retailers are making them no idea if they are as good or better but they look similar. I was only ever pulled over twice for it. One time by a fluke of luck in northern Michigan but honestly that cop didn’t even give me a fine. He just said take it off which I did on the spot using a penny. But then later down the road put it back on. I never had a single issue after that until about 2014 that first warning was in 2005. That’s a long time to go without a stop. And I drove all over ny, pa , oh, mi, fla, ga, tn, nc, sc, mo, wi… Michigans up.. just to name a few and Ontario Canada.. the only other time I got pulled for it was in a bigger city in Pennsylvania on the eastern part of the state. Local officer. He wrote me my first ticket for it was only 175$. I figure for all the tickets I missed in about 14-15 yrs I still got my moneys worth. After that I got a new one and continued running one and never had an issue until I quit running one in about 2018 as they were getting really tough to find anymore. So do they work sure they do why do you think cops don’t want us having them. Just like radar jamming of course it worked. That’s why they made it illegal. They don’t want to play fair they want the upper hand. Simple as that. And as for myth busters. People who stand by that show are inept and incompetent. Don’t listen to their bs testing. I’ve got plenty of lidar guns of my own and laser jammers also. They claimed laser jammers don’t work after putting together their idea of a laser jammer. It failed in their tests because they had no idea what they are doing. I know I’ve tested my lasers which I have 6 of that police actually use against a laser interceptor and blinder laser jammer and an alp. The guns were the ones that failed. So clearly mythbusters is full of myths and Sh**. They just didn’t know what they are doing. And I made countless runs against real guns and even real officers the jammers work. Even had msp one time tell me yeah I know you have a jammer. Meaning yes he got jammed. And he admitted it in what he said. Later that same month I saw the type of laser gun he used on me from that part of the state for sale on eBay lol!

A ticket for intentionally obscuring your plate is almost always much worse than anything they could grab your plate for.
bdpowkk@reddit
No it's not. In a lot of states they aren't even allowed to pull you over for it. It's just an extra $70 charge if you get caught speeding.
VulpesIncendium@reddit
A standard clear or lightly tinted one will do absolutely nothing except attract extra attention from the cops. The few that actually can obscure your licence plate are even more noticeable to cops.
If you really want to avoid speed cameras (and following the law is just too hard for you), put a few super-bright infrared LEDs right beside the plate. They'll completely blow out the image on a camera, especially at night, but are invisible to human eyes. Just know that if you get caught doing this, it's just as illegal as the other plate covering methods.
No_Instruction_7730@reddit
Well that was a stupid reply..
Gamer30168@reddit
Is it illegal (as in laws written against it) to blind their cameras like that though?Â
wrd83@reddit
Probably falls under obstruction of justice. I'd assume the crime is worse than being caught.
Talentless_Cooking@reddit
Depending on where you are a clear plate cover, and I do mean the nonobstructive type, is considered a plate obstruction and a reasonable reason to pull you over and possible fine.
Top_Donkey_711@reddit
I Wear transitions lenses that are clear indoors but appear darkly tinted in photos. When the toll camera flashes some clear license plate covers respond the same way( sold specifically to cheat tolls). It can't be determined which covers do this without a camera so all plate covers were made illegal.
ownyourhorizon@reddit
no, cause if they did, theyd be illegal
fukreddit73265@reddit
They are illegal. Police just don't care unless it's legitimately obstructing the view of your plate, or if they need an easy excuse to pull you over.
pglggrg@reddit
No they dont. If they did, then this would be #1 priority for road pirates to pull you over for, since you are taking money away from the city
palmoyas@reddit
Donut did a video on this on YouTube.
