With the iGPU rumored to be on par with 4070, and with the iGPU using system RAM instead of having separate VRAM like dGPUs do, I wonder if it's going to be good for running larger LLMs that otherwise won't fit into 4070's 8GB VRAM.

*4070 Mobile.
No shot a 120W APU with up to 90W for the iGPU can perform the same as a desktop RTX 4070 let alone a 4060TI.
calcium@reddit
I would say it depends on the memory interconnect, but one can hope.

I wonder if LPCAMM can easily used with 256-bit? i have the feeling that its not gonna happen and well be back to soldered memory for mobiliy/miniPC high-end platforms like Strix Halo.
hishnash@reddit
The LPCAMM2 modules are 128 Bit each you would need 2 modules to get 256Bit, that does end up taking up a large amount of internal volume.
fatso486@reddit (OP)
So we're back to not having an upgradable/modular solution for high end systems. It's a real shame because producing the whole platform apu+board +lpddr5 memory will not be cheap. Especially for Chinese mini pc vendors like minisforum /blink/morefine
timschwartz@reddit
Since they won't need memory slots on the motherboard anymore, maybe that space could be used for multiple CPU sockets. You would upgrade by adding more chips.
Sopel97@reddit
apu and highend dont belong in the same sentence
INITMalcanis@reddit
How are you defining "highend" in this context?
bluepx@reddit
MI300 is an APU
Forsaken_Arm5698@reddit
and so is something like the M2 Ultra or M3 Max
hishnash@reddit
APU can be high end
throwaway0986421@reddit
But it is relatively flat internal volume. Each module has a dimension of 78 mm x 34 mm x 4.5 mm, which is comparable to M.2 2280's dimension of 22 mm × 80 mm x (thickness of components 1.5 mm per side, thickness of the PCB is 0.8 mm +/- 10%).
In other words, if the device has enough room for two M.2 2280 slots, it can fit two LPCAMM2 modules.

LPCAMM just like soldered LPDDRX must be placed right next to the CPU for signal integrity. That isn't always possible and will limit how other components (e.g. the heatsink) can be placed.
throwaway0986421@reddit
The alternative is using SO-DIMM, which still has to be placed relatively close to the CPU anyways, and comes with all of its drawbacks (slow speed, high Z-height, etc). Also each SO-DIMM stick is 64-bits, which means a massive amount of board space would be needed for four of them for 256-bit bus.
Forsaken_Arm5698@reddit
why oh why didn't JEDEC create a standard for 256 bit bus LPCAMM module.
1731799517@reddit
Because it would be very large, and if you need that kind of performance you would want to go directly soldered anyways.
hishnash@reddit
Size needed for the number of pins
Exist50@reddit
Yeah, it's perfectly possible. Though obviously it would be a bit more rigid in terms of PCB layout vs soldered. I don't think we'll see it in Strix Halo just to cut down on the number of configs AMD supports, but there's no inherent reason we couldn't.
riklaunim@reddit
It may end up that only selected LPCAMM modules would be compatible.

bUt AmD is DoNE with GpU
conquer69@reddit
When people say that, they are talking about discrete gpus. The article is talking about an apu.
aminorityofone@reddit
give it 5-10 years and there wont be a difference.
bubblesort33@reddit
What I'm curious about is machine learning on this thing. Sure, it's not very fast, but you can run 64GB models on it.
fatso486@reddit (OP)
wouldn't be surprised if this is how AMD tries to sell this as a premium product. The 4070M is only 8GB after all.
lifestealsuck@reddit
Steamdeck 2 with this pls .
fatso486@reddit (OP)
It’s a bad idea. The Steam Deck’s (Van Gogh) strength lies in targeting the best performance at less than 10W for its 720p/800p display. The Strix Halo (even Strixpoint) offers excessive performance at the cost of too much power.

I thought strix halo was a 2025 release. Is this a juiced strix point or did AMD changed their roadmap?

Anyone know what the change for RDNA3.5 is?
fatso486@reddit (OP)
Not sure but I assume its a fixed slightly faster version of rdna3. so with 40CUs it should perform somewhere between a 7600 and a rx7700xt, that should but it at around a 4060ti. that should be around mobility 4070m.
BleaaelBa@reddit
that would put it around 5050ti.
zofran_junkie@reddit
The 5050 Ti doesn’t exist. There isn’t even a 4050 Ti.
996forever@reddit
4050 mobile even at max TGP can’t match 140w 3060 so I highly doubt it.
bubblesort33@reddit
If the RTX 5000 series is just the same architecture as Ada in rasterization but clocked like 10% higher, then yes, possibly. If the 5050ti desktop model has 24 SMs clocked to 3ghz. Most of the changes on Nvidia's next generation I'd imagine are to do with RT and machine learning. Effectively this thing might perform like an OCD RTX 4060 to 3ghz.
PetrichorAndNapalm@reddit
I would guess RT
riklaunim@reddit
They changed the ISA quite a bit, adding things that will be in RDNA4, there was an analysis on chipsncheese. It likely won't be groundbreaking but it should improve efficiency.
Slyons89@reddit
Would these chips have hardware accelerated AV1 encode capability since they have RDNA3+ GPU cores?
fatso486@reddit (OP)
Don't know for sure but would be weird if it didn't. Their older Pheniox had is a long time ago.
