My Cheap Company Doesn't Want to Pay the Toll
They're saying you can surely drive up the Parkway to the other Bridge West of Hudson River but I never have. They say it's 'legal' unless it's winter... Anyone knows current laws?

Don't drive on the parkway, but you really should use that bridge. It's got so much less traffic. The idea of willingly using the GW is insane to me.

stephenforbes@reddit

Because they are not the ones driving.

No trucks over 10,000 GVW north of exit 105 on the garden state parkway. Likely you're not permitted on the road anyway.
View on Reddit #26117343

StankyChicken920@reddit

No trucks allowed on the Palisades Parkway.
View on Reddit #26113291

Xalenn@reddit

Seems odd to not want to pay the toll but have no problem paying you to drive around, which I'm guessing is probably going to cost more
View on Reddit #26052968

Yz-Guy@reddit

Not really. The GW is like 90-100 for trucks. Time of day depending.

If you are in New Jersey going to Connecticut stay away from the gwb and the cross Bronx. It is cheaper and probably a lot quicker to go 287 over the tap/homo bridge.
View on Reddit #26103873

Slosky22@reddit

Homo bridge, I’m stealing that lmfao
View on Reddit #26108945

BlackberryVarious4@reddit

F that corrupt pos. Can’t believe they let him name a bridge after his “dad”. Just happens to have the same name.

Whadya Mean? He's being paid standard zip to zip rate.
View on Reddit #26053718

2017Fatbob@reddit

Zip to zip is no longer standard. Practical miles is standard. Even household movers don't contract zip to zip anymore. My company pays within 3% of hub miles.
View on Reddit #26054483

SpongebobAteMyAss@reddit

What does zip to zip mean?
View on Reddit #26055489

pyrodakalt@reddit

Zip code to zip code. Zip codes can be large, essentially cheating you out of the final miles on the load. In my experience, practical miles cheat you out of miles as well, but it is usually negligible.
View on Reddit #26055749

Hurricaneshand@reddit

How do practical miles cheat you?
View on Reddit #26058990

tehdanerer@reddit

For example 5 miles in downtown NYC vs. 5 miles cruising on the highway.
View on Reddit #26060385

HeGotNoBoneessss@reddit

That’s just mileage pay in general. Practical miles didn’t do that.
View on Reddit #26074832

Silent-Room-4987@reddit

Zip code to zip code. Meaning they only pay the distance between the 2 regardless of the difference between hub miles (actual route taken including detours and breaks) or actual address to address (not paying for detours and breaks). These little things add up quite quickly in an industry where driving around the world 2-4 times is considered normal.
View on Reddit #26055816

Heavy-Safe6999@reddit

Commercial vehicles are PROHIBITED on Parkways….to get up to the Cuomo bridge you will have to loop 287
View on Reddit #26054329

PathofEnlightment@reddit (OP)

Yep. Kinda figured it out. That's a slow out of the way haul.
View on Reddit #26055514

After-Fig4166@reddit

9w isn’t a parkway
View on Reddit #26055734

PathofEnlightment@reddit (OP)

Well then is it driveable from Jersey straight to Cuomo
View on Reddit #26055889

BlackberryVarious4@reddit

You take 17north to 287 don’t go 9w. I’m a local driver in NJ and Bergen county has truck restrictions for local deliveries only.
View on Reddit #26104078

PathofEnlightment@reddit (OP)

Yep. Lots of routes off limits. Thanks
View on Reddit #26106274

After-Fig4166@reddit

9W runs next to the palisades parkway. Idk what rig you’re driving though
View on Reddit #26056364

Regeth3@reddit

Most of the route shown is the parkway, outside of Orangeburg is where you hop off and take 9w up to 287 near the palisade mall.
View on Reddit #26068270

No_Teaching_8273@reddit

You can absolutely take 9w in a rig
View on Reddit #26058636

BlackberryVarious4@reddit

You can for local deliveries and honestly the worst route available.
View on Reddit #26104186

NoMoreDrivin@reddit

I'm pretty sure 9w is only a legal truck route for Bergen County deliveries. 80w to 17n to 287 is the correct move here.
View on Reddit #26066481

Edge2110@reddit

This is the correct and most direct way for a truck to get around that
View on Reddit #26089261

No_Teaching_8273@reddit

Technically you can say you're going to Bergen , 80 to 17 then 287 works also , it's usually what I use when the gwb is royally fucked .
View on Reddit #26068159

12GT500@reddit

Keep using google maps on the east coast so I can see what bridge you hit or end up on the parkway.
View on Reddit #26104282

PathofEnlightment@reddit (OP)

I've crossed these paths plenty and I know where and when to use trucker gps if needed.
View on Reddit #26105711

two_tapered_tips@reddit

I don't think it's about being cheap. Staying on 95 and taking the GWB to cross the Hudson and continue heading north into New England is a terrible idea. I wouldn't even take the Tappan-zee bridge or whatever it's called now Cuomo bridge, I think. You'll tend to hit a lot of traffic on that route as soon as you cross into CT. I would always go further north and take 84 across the Newburgh-Beacon bridge.
View on Reddit #26093749

Resident-Impact1591@reddit

No, you can not drive on parkways. Lanes are narrow and bridges are low.
View on Reddit #26088451

fastnsx21@reddit

Company did you a favor. The Tapp is faster anyways
View on Reddit #26087494

Green_Lawyer_1049@reddit

The GW toll for trucks is like $120 and it's honestly faster to take 287 with all thr GW traffic. And you don't have to worry about breaking down in the south bronx and getting your shit towed from CBE to some sketchy ass shop in South bronx. Yankees fan but the SB is not where u wanna be my guy if your truck takes a shit

In general, at least what I've always been told, is commercial vehicles are not allowed on parkways. Haven't had to try and route through a parkway tho so I'm not 100%. I really wouldn't want to work for a carrier that doesn't pay for tolls. Unless they're paying me a shit ton more per mile It's just not advantageous to me.
View on Reddit #26071494

Primedirector3@reddit

Cuomo is a toll too
View on Reddit #26070216

ironeagle2006@reddit

To run through NYC your carrier is looking at over 300 bucks in tolls plus traffic delays. Freaking 95 through NYC your nuts if you're wanting to go that way. The only time I ever went over that Freaking GWB was if I was going into NYC proper or had to go to either of the 2 airports for airfreight pickup. The rest of the time it was F that go around and this was in the 90s. One carrier I drove for paid 250 bucks for any load that delivered to any of the 5 bourghs and Long Island even then they still had trouble getting driver's to go.
View on Reddit #26064768

unwantedrelic@reddit

Yup. We get paid a NYC surcharge of 250 for going in. Also charge the 100 buck toll back to the shipper if we have to go over it. Y’all want the load to go into that hell hole you gotta cough it up.
View on Reddit #26069670

deezkeys098@reddit

Na if they are sending me anywhere near New York City they can pay the toll screw all that especially with all that traffic
View on Reddit #26068050

bloopie1192@reddit

They want you to take the parkway? Parkway is illegal for trucks no matter the season. The bridges are short. Hell, even getting on a parkway in Ny can be impossible for a truck. They got those weird stone half circle entrances that only 1 car can fit through at a time. There are even signs in NY stating that trucks can't take the parkway. If ive got it right and they want you to take a parkway, Your company seems like they're trying to dump you. Or they're ninnies. Now... there are some exceptions? Off like 19, you can take the playland parkway for a bit. And there are a couple other ones that i think trucks can take but I try not to mess with parkways at all. Too much of a gamble unless you know what you're doing.
View on Reddit #26064920

Odin4456@reddit

lol when the fuel they pay to go around tolls equals more than the toll itself and they still insist you go around…
View on Reddit #26063145

Left_Ad_1354@reddit

Naw tolls on that bridge are very expensive for semis. I’d send you around as well
View on Reddit #26062869

bicyclewhoa17@reddit

You can use route 17 to get up to 287
View on Reddit #26062246

NS-13@reddit

Somebody told me the toll for the gw is like 500 for trucks. Not sure if that's true or not. I gotta imagine it's hefty considering the alternate route burns a ton of fuel and you still have to pay a toll over Cuomo right?
View on Reddit #26056857

DuaLipasTrophyHusban@reddit

GW was 155 back when I lived in NJ years ago, no idea what it’s up to now.
View on Reddit #26061206

brsrafal@reddit

Ain't they wasting fuel time and driver pay and time is $ cheaper to pay toll.
View on Reddit #26060712

NomadTruckerOTR@reddit

View on Reddit #26060349

CaptMike76@reddit

Save the toll money but spend it on fuel scratching your ass on the Cross Bronx?
View on Reddit #26060339

Lopsided_Pension_@reddit

That’s a $100 toll plus traffic, you’re better off going up there anyway, less traffic.
View on Reddit #26055190

ShortCurlies@reddit

There's a toll on the GWB? When did they do that? Did they fix it? Last time I went over that bridge was in 1989 and there was hunks of concrete missing the road was rough as hell. I was sitting in traffic on top and the trucks underneath were shaking the bejesus out of the bridge.
View on Reddit #26057998

Lopsided_Pension_@reddit

Not only did they put a toll on GWB but they’re putting in a congestion toll in manhattan. If you’re delivering in Manhattan that’s another $100 fee on top of the toll.
View on Reddit #26059744

atomictoaster94J@reddit

The GWB has always been a toll bridge. But also, it’s still falling apart as are much of the roads in New York and New Jersey
View on Reddit #26058626

Chamelion117@reddit

**Newburgh-Beacon bridge has entered the chat** You're lucky they let you take Cuomo.
View on Reddit #26059577

hugothebear@reddit

That is not a legal route. You gotta take 80 to 17 to 287
View on Reddit #26059567

Nozerone@reddit

I would have already been planning on taking the long way around, cause I won't touch 95 through NYC unless I absolutely have too.
View on Reddit #26059154

Do you really want to deal with the GW anyhow? That's a nightmare. The "new Tap" is a much better ride imo.

I avoid the GWB whenever I can but not on parkway. Thats a great way to get a big ticket. Trucks are not allowed on parkways and you probably won't fit even if you try

Lopsided_Pension_@reddit

Wait, trucks aren’t allowed on that parkway. Take 287.
