this looks nice, would live there if i could. I cant see anything wrong with more housing in a housing shortage.
sarsar69@reddit
Yawn! Boring skyscrapers, again. Who wants to live in crappy high rise flats pretending to be apartments🤣
Entity2D@reddit
They should put a lit up pyramid on top of the red building that can be seen for miles.
darybrain@reddit
There isn't even a point on it, ffs. At the very least make the top pointy and put strip lighting down the corners.
These flats are going to be super expensive due to the location, but also annoying to live in from the noise.
TechboyUK@reddit
So dull looking.
First a hotel that looks like a cheese grater (Hotel la Tour), now this.
It looks like they've just gone with the cheapest architect.
Super_Sundae@reddit
Shame - quite like the point. Nice little landmark, I’ve been to quite a few technical exams for Pearsons in there!
DragonWolfZ@reddit
:( I was hoping for a giant concrete cow building....
cflyssy@reddit
They look shit.
Typical cut-and-paste, boring new-build flats. No imagination.
If the Point really can't be kept and repurposed into something useful (I'd say I'm healthily skeptical of such claims made by money-hungry developers), then it would at least be theoretically possible to replace it with a similarly distinctive, landmark building of some kind of architectural interest.
But no. Lowest-common-denominator new-build swill it must be, apparently.
TreKeyz@reddit
They really should put the point on the roof. It would look amazing.
Major-Peanut@reddit
I don't mind the point being made into something else but I don't think flats are the way forward. I am not a big fan of housing right next to the centre, I think it looks ugly and I'd feel sad for the people who live there as it would be loud all the time. Opposite a massive shopping centre doesn't seem very homely to me. But I suppose people have to live somewhere right and not everyone minds living in a city centre. I just hate the idea of mega expensive flats going up and being a massive eyesore. The new hotel is so ugly!
nitram343@reddit
housing in the city centre will benefit the city centre, it will infuse life to the pretty dead city centre. Think in all those business that are hardly working mon-Friday.
Also the alternative is what? empty office buildings? leave it as it is? useless and rotten?
Major-Peanut@reddit
Is the city centre pretty dead? It's always absolutely heaving whenever I go, and I usually go mid week.
Yeah idk that's what I mean. Flats are fine but if it's massive high rise that is ugly AF and doesn't really suit the vibe. But, like I said, people need to live somewhere right?
With escape round the corner it doesn't need to be anything in particular. Maybe a nice park where people working in the shopping centre can eat their lunch and get some air on their breaks? Campbell Park is a bit far when you only have 3mins
nitram343@reddit
are you having a laugh? have you been to the city centre of other cities? Its not crowded by any length of the imagination.
high rises are the perfect way to fit lots of people without occupying all the land. Visually, if anything will improve the skyline. NY, London, literally any Australian city... and then MK. Recently drove someone not familiar with MK to the city centre, and they thought we were in some industrial state.
I'm all in for parks, but right now the point is in between shopping centre and a car park. A park there makes no sense.
Major-Peanut@reddit
Yeah I don't think high rises improve the skyline but that is my opinion.
Putting up flats because you want people to shop more ain't it. People should be able to do things without having to pay loads of money all the time. the public transportation is shit and there is no way they're going to build good enough parking for the amount of people who would live there. Living in a flat sucks, I used to live in one, on a high street, it was shit. I think mk had it right when it had the bit for shopping and the bit for living.
The shopping centre is always so busy!! Unless you're talking about other areas like the hub, which actually isn't very busy in the day even though that has flats close by.
nitram343@reddit
but no one is forcing people to live in the city centre. Lots of fancy apartments are being built, I would say the standards are pretty high (as the prices). People living in the city centre don't rely as much in cars, as they have everything at walking distance. I do know people living in the city centre, and is lifestyle more than anything. Some of them either don't have cars, or use the car very infrequently.
Notagelding@reddit
Why feel sorry for the people that live there? 🤔
Major-Peanut@reddit
"because it would be loud all the time"
Notagelding@reddit
Potential buyers will be well aware of this
RadicalDog@reddit
God those look dull. Don't mind the idea of new apartments, but those ones need to go back to the drawing board.
Substantial-Rip2571@reddit
I only moved to MK in 2020, so the point holds absolutely no sentimental value to me and I’m honestly glad it’s going. I like the idea of having some taller buildings (might be biased bc I’m from North America where there were tons of sky scrapers haha) but tbh these proposed buildings look a bit bland. I think they should make something unique about them at least, especially since it’s right in the centre
Megaprana@reddit
Honestly I’m not too sad about the point going. I understand the nostalgia, but it seemed like it wasn’t a useful space.
I’m not even bothered by the height. I actually really like having a few tall buildings in the centre. It helps give me a sense of direction/perspective when I’m driving around MK.
What bothers me is how boring these buildings look. It’s called “the point” yet there’s nothing pointy about it. Why not give MK its own lil Shard or something?
Substantial-Rip2571@reddit
Good shout actually
Baking-Soda@reddit
I'm a point fan but I would accept a MK shard as a suitable replacement
mach2001@reddit
Such a shame that it got in such a state, but if it’s not viable it’s not worth having there, is the multi-story car park being pulled down too?
damesca@reddit
Boring buildings replacing an iconic one.
I don't mind the Point being replaced, but give us something architecturally exciting when doing so. Real shame.
GavUK@reddit (OP)
As well as the sad loss of such an iconic Milton Keynes landmark (although perhaps I'm just being too sentimental about the red lights of the pyramid that I used to see as we approached MK on the motorway when I was a kid), these new buildings look like they will tower over the other buildings around them (sadly most of the newer developments in the city centre area).
