Agree or Disagree? The Boeing 717 is one of the most underrated airliners of all time

Air Tranny as I used to call it was MY CHOICE from HPN to PBI and FLL and MCO. I lived the 2/3 seating and the huge luggage bins. Comfortable and very quiet. Wish there were more! Now only Delta uses them to ATL and when I choose to fly anywhere i travel on them whenever I can

My gf, a flight attendant, had an interesting opinion when I asked her. She loves working in them. Apparently they're really easy to board/ de-plane, but don't have many modern amenities because they're getting old. So in her opinion, they're great for crews and aviation aficionados that appreciate its utility/ legacy, but not so much for the super sky-miles jet setters looking for bells, whistles, and pampering.

Aw man you're living the dream!

VERY underrated. Right plane, Wrong time

Mediocre at best. It’s like the Toledo of airliners.
Chunk75@reddit
Only losers would take that early upgrade…I also heard they’re closing the DTW 717 base.
redvariation@reddit
It's a DC-9 with newer engines.
I prefer the 727 myself.

Agreed, T. Agreed

I know a lot of folks love the 717's predecessors, those being the DC-9 and MD80 series of aircraft, but I rarely see much love being given to the current incarnation. It may not be as flashy or as glamorous as other commercial aircraft, but it is an incredibly reliable airframe with a near-spotless safety record. It's unfortunate that only a few notable airlines still operate these workhorses, as they truly deserve more attention than what they've received thus far. At least, in my humble opinion.

it is definitely underrated. I love it!

Fun fact: In its 22-year service life, there have been zero hull losses and zero fatalities involving a Boeing 717.
CastelPlage@reddit
Same as the A340 except 29 years and more than twice as many of them built
loafer@reddit
No hull losses eh?

Thats not the boeing 717 though, that was a totally different aircraft.
Intelligent_League_1@reddit
Yeah they were talking about the other aircraft in that crash

Isn’t that also true for the MD-90 as well?
ryanov@reddit
Nope. 1 death on the MD-90. Uni Air.

Sorry, I meant to say, is the Boeing 717 more technologically advanced than the earlier MD80s and DC9s? Siri messed me up, which is quite rare. 🤣🤣

I flew on the Boeing 717 round-trip from Orlando to Atlanta with AirTran. I must say that it was a very nice airplane. I believe our plane was very new. My question is is the Boeing 717 more technologically advanced, and the earlier series of MD 80s and the DC9? Again, I really enjoyed flying on that plane.
