It looks amazing, some colors are a little oversaturated sometimes or blurry faces when theyre far from the main scene but it's interesting.

Yes... these series were recorded for television, usually in 480i... even the dubbing into other languages ended up on VHS tapes and are extremely hard to find.

When they digitized it on DVD, they increased the resolution a bit. But it still looks terrible on an HD or 4K TV.

The same goes for other series from that era. And some cartoons like Biker Mice from Mars.

Absolutely... I like the original color grading of the series.

But I'm experimenting to see if I can get a result that stays true to the classic look but in a higher resolution... I'm using the Artemis model of Topaz for now. 🤞

Seeing Xena clips on tiktok that looked like they have been enhanced so I googled and it lead me here. Are you still working on this project? I'm currently rewatching Hercules on Amazon Prime but I would love to watch the ai upscaled version of the show. Is your link to it still available?

Yes, I like how the results turn out, it's incredible...

And yes, I know... I was able to find posts from some people with a few episodes, or with magnet links... but none with all 6 seasons of Xena upscaled. That's why I decided to make my version.

Moreover, I'm taking the time to find some dubbings and subtitles in other languages to add to them.

I also have the Hercules movies.

The upscale Xena I watched had some issues especially with the backgrounds so its always welcome for a more modern version to come out that slowly fixes some of the issues previous versions had.

Yes, there are always some details that don't turn out quite right, for example; when there are curly hairs or distant faces. Unfortunately, the original resolution of the DVDs doesn't help much, it's poor even for DVD format. Perhaps in a near future, AIs will improve further and it will be possible to see better results. 😁

I know it may be unpopular, but I don't think the upscaling is very good. The AI does a lot of smoothing stuff to faces and I really don't like how that looks because it's not better and sometimes it's not even accurate.

I noticed that the over smoothing of the faces and such was more noticeable with certain Frame Interpolation settings within upscaling programs. If you stick to the original frame rate and turn frame Interpolation off, the weird over smoothing doesn't happen or happens significantly less. The image is still upscaled and is pretty clear without much oversaturation as well.

This is just my experience after messing with some settings in Topaz AI.

I think you're right, the technology is relatively new and has a lot of room for improvement. I do my best effort making some tests with different settings, because I love this story, but still far from perfect.

Xena is a series that, on its original DVDs, can look pixelated on a modern TV. This upscale is a good alternative for those who don't keep vintage TVs or DVD players.

I believe it's harder than upscaling... after all, you would need the AI to "extend" the shot of each scene in the episode. Maybe in the future. 🤔

I'm sure it will be possible in the coming years. There is this video of Akira being vertically extended using AI to fit a phone screen. The AI software, basically drew static backgrounds to fill the gaps.

I'd say give it a few more years and it will probably be able to produce animated backgrounds too. Maybe a few more years before they look like live action... But it seems almost inevitable.

Honestly, it'll be a better solution than cutting the image to have it match the wide-screen. I hate that they cut some of the screen image for Seinfeld, X files and Buffy.

I agree, stretching the image or cropping it is the worst and most annoying... as far as I'm concerned, the square format doesn't bother me for watching those classic series... my versions of Hercules and Xena in 1080p are kept in the classic TV format.
