My new neighbours have four dogs that bark day and night. What's your most recent "Why do people do this to themselves?" question you've asked?

I seriously don't understand why you'd want four dogs that constantly bark? In what world is shouting "Shut up!" and "fuck off!" at the top of voice fun?
Neddlings55@reddit
Woman that lives behind me has around 16 dogs. All she does all day is shout at them; tells them to shut up, tells them how annoying they are. Tells them constantly to get out of her way.
Baffles me why she even has one, let alone 16 (ish)
Dimac99@reddit
Hoarding behaviour.

I don’t understand the hype of having dogs at all. They smell, they’re boisterous, make noise, cost money. It all seems like a major inconvenience just to get maybe some love back sometimes? (Also could be describing kids)
fiendofecology@reddit
I quite enjoy walking my boyfriend’s dog that he shares with his ex. I also enjoy handing him back to her for the next week!
PollyPutty@reddit
I’ve never heard of this before! Is the dog cool with being apart from each owner or is s/he confused?
fiendofecology@reddit
He seems fine to be honest!
WorcsBloke@reddit
I understand why many people feel that way about them. I just don't like the slightly superior attitude some dog owners put across that you're "missing out" if you don't personally share that view. It comes across badly, a bit like when people who choose not to have kids are looked down on for similar reasons.
Balnagask@reddit
Dogs are great. 4 out of control barking dogs are shit
Middle-Background-52@reddit
Aw you should try owning one, they make life so much better
Lassitude1001@reddit
As a father, you're definitely describing kids.
Browneskiii@reddit
Having a dog and a disabled child is no different.
Polarwarrior@reddit
It’s not a ‘hype’, the humble ‘dog’ is one of the oldest domesticated animals and is often referred to as “man’s best friend”, we’ve been looking after them for thousands of years. So less ‘hype’ and more like the fact a lot of us are programmed to be compatible with dogs.
Maybe find an excuse to chill out with any of your friends pets (if they have them), it will hopefully help with your understanding and maybe then you will the hype.

It's the smell for me I don't know how people do it. I do have a pretty sensitive nose which is a shame because I do like dogs, they're lovely when raised well. I also have terrible misophonia, cannot stand the sound of them licking themselves lol
Demonthief27@reddit
Because you can train that out of them, my dogs don’t smell they get groomed and don’t go through shit up areas. Not boisterous at all just sleep all day and active when I take them a walk. Never really hear them, one barks here and there at people outside but that’s their job and it’s very rare and always for a cuddle.
They do cost money but it’s cheaper than having kids.
mrayner9@reddit
They seem more suited to a rural lifestyle like on the farm. Couldn't imagine having one in a modern city with an office job.
loadofoldcodswallop@reddit
My boy is smelly and scruffy and stupid and my wife definitely has a type haha
Relative_Shop4676@reddit
You should make a report to environmental health and RSPCA these dogs do not sound happy
burneritiswhatitis@reddit
16 ish💀💀💀 they could eat her

There's a house near me with incredibly bright cold white lightbulbs and no lampshades in apparently every room.
It must be like a torture dungeon in there.
PollyPutty@reddit
My neighbour has a light brighter than the sun in his garden that stays on all night and shines straight into my house - luckily I already have black out blinds in my bedroom but I am always momentarily stunned when I need to use the bathroom. Not sure what his deal is, had a break in maybe.
LunarSymphonist@reddit
Our drove is particularly bad for this. For a good mile there's at least 5 houses with aggressive larger dogs that constantly bark at anything that goes past, and they often keep on barking long after the "threat" is gone. Usually it's because they learned to do it early on, and parents being at work & children being at school, the habit had no pushback. One can try to train them when one is present, but if there's 8h a day when nobody's around, that's more persuasive to a habit.
AceusErin@reddit
Wow are you living near me lol. It’s actually distressing - the dogs are left for hours barking. Or if they are home they shout and swear at them. I wish I could do something sometimes I feel like cutting a hole in the fence
LaraH39@reddit
Get a silent dog whistle. Every time they start a good blast on the whistle they'll stop. Every time they do it, blast again.
It's effective and cheap and very easy.
Wearethedevil@reddit
There is an app you can download that does the dog whistle. I had the same issue and it bloody works!
Ok-Exam6702@reddit
Wow! Fantastic suggestion.
ShinyHeadedCook@reddit
100% I got a new neighbour who has a French bulldog that barked constantly all day. I did the silent whistle thing whenever it started , now I rarely hear it
Emergency_Cellist754@reddit
A lot of dog owners get completely desensitised to the sound of barking and either don't notice it or more often just aren't bothered by it. It doesn't grate on their nerves the way it does for others.
Ironically if this guy is shouting at his dogs to shut up he's probably, in his own way, trying to keep them quiet because he knows he's supposed to.
I have similar neighbours and one of the things that make it hard to complain is - because they're not bad people on their terms - they just have a different threshold than I do, and for them barking dogs are just part of life. They know it bugs me so they tell the dogs to shush, but they ultimately don't get it.
gremilym@reddit
What's ironic is that by shouting at barking dogs, you often encourage them because they think "great, now we're all joining in 🙂"
Kibby9331@reddit
Simple - get 4 very sassy cats, make sure these cats are serious divas, and wait, if not your cup of tea call the rspca or battersea ASAP.
Glass_Mouse88@reddit
It’s not fun at all. My husband wanted one, so we got a little patterdale and all she does is shout, she’s cute and everything but lord I’d have preferred a cat. Can’t even imagine having 4!
Zacsquidgy@reddit
Patterdales are very cute yeah but are known for their tendency to bark a lot! Lots of other breeds are easier to train to be virtually silent. Quieter even than some cats!
SpamJavelin00@reddit
Play this as loud as you can and keep it going , while you get some peace !! I tried it only yesterday with a nearby Jack Russell and it went very quiet !! Play this as loud as you can !! LINK
Huge_Horse_8945@reddit
I've found myself shouting "STFU" through the wall a few times, even though I know it makes no difference. I like dogs but I hate the constant noise
vkreep@reddit
Ive been waking up at 7am to the neighbours shit barking and if I shout loud enough they take it in
KelpFox05@reddit
They want dogs but don't realise that dogs, y'know, have needs. They put no effort into training them or giving them enrichment and therefore the dogs become super anxious, and so they bark all the time because that's what they do when they're anxious. The owners, because they're uneducated, assume the dogs are somehow doing it on purpose to be annoying, and so don't realise that they can fix the situation.
You may want to make a report to the RSPCA. These dogs do not sound well taken care of.
boobalinka@reddit
Sounds like conditioned dysfunction and dysregulation. Poor dogs, basically stuck in vicious cycle with their "carers" of constant escalation that never gets resolved. And those carers are stuck in their own unresolved shit from whenever and whatever.
Best to report to council as a neighbourhood/noise issue.
Independent-Ad5593@reddit
I despise bad dog owners. Had neighbours similar who just shouted at the dog for barking constantly. Never once saw them leave the house to walk them. Only let out for toilet and even then, just screaming at the dog for bad recall when it was probably just desperate to get away. Just takes a particular type of asshole to keep pets that way...
dreadtreacle@reddit
Theyre not being looked after properly .. so theyre barking for food / water/ walks n so on .
Have you rang anyone about them ?
Decard_Pain@reddit
It's what happens when you get dogs and done train them
Waste_Ad4554@reddit
Same here. Neighbour has 4 dogs that bark a lot . Then his sister visits him most weekends with her 4 dogs. The stink of dogshit in this weather is terrible as well(he lets his dogs shit all over his garden).
Phoned the council to make a complaint and got passed around so now going to our MP. Not that he will do anything.
Hellchild400@reddit
Because the simple answer Is their needs aren't being properly met. People buy dogs on impulse/ based on looks and then do very little research into whatever breed they are and the specific requirements. And if they do the follow through is mostly lacking.
loadofoldcodswallop@reddit
My sister, my son's mum, and my sister in law are all expecting their own, 3rd baby each soon. Me and my youngest sister just over here with the little side eye meme. I have called them all fucking idiots to their faces, but in our family we are mean to show love. Like, I love you, I'll be glad to be add to the hoard of children I can teach to swear and be annoying, but you're fuckig idiots. Lol
donkey_OT@reddit
You are shouting that or the neighbours?
