Where to go from here?

Working on my first build. On a bit of a budget but that hasn’t stopped me yet. Looking for suggestions on how to set up a decent truck that’ll keep me adventuring for a few years until I have a larger budget. Truck is a 2002 v6 SR5. Any advice or criticisms welcome. Also looking for friends to go on trips with. No one I know is interested unfortunately. I’m from northern CT, not much fun to be had around here unfortunately.

Real sliders welded to the frame, not bolt on steps.
Remove the brush guard, it’s basically a lever that’ll get bent downward as soon as anything catches the bottom. Replace with a high clearance tube bumper or “Ranch Hand” replacement bumper with built in grill guard. Could do the same for the rear (high clearance).
A winch is massively helpful in every condition and you’ll likely find yourself pulling other folks out much more than you’ll rescue yourself. That’s been my experience anyway.
GMRS radio and or CB radio & antenna. Learn the channels of the nearby districts you’re wheeling in, just in case.
Maybe a larger fuel tank if you’re often heading way out to nowhere.
But really, just enjoy driving it and when a problem arises, you’ll be able to choose the solution. Enjoy!

What does it not do that you would like it to do?

Well as of right now it’s been good but I’ve only done fairly mild and short trails because that’s all I have access to around here. Same trails my stock chevy 1500 can do. I’d like to test its limits now and go from there but struggling to find trails that aren’t either super mild or just downright mud pits.

Oh wow thanks cap, seems like you missed the first sentence where the question is about the build. Not where to go drive it. I’ve exhausted most options around me either in a truck or on a dirtbike. So I am also looking for people to go new places with.

I think Learnigstuff247's point was that none of us know what your goals are. Are you intending on going out for 3 days or 3 weeks? Are you sleeping in a tent, in the truck, or on top of the truck? Are you driving forest roads, desert roads, or 4x4 trails? Are you looking for advice on suspension, a sleeping platform, or electrical systems?
The point is, go out and use it. Then decide what you need.

Fair enough, unfortunately don’t usually have time for 3 week trips although that would ultimately be the goal. I have no idea what would work best for me for the sleeping situation. Ideally something that is quick to setup/take down but also like the idea of having the use of the bed. Considering building a drawer setup like I did for my old Chevy. I’m in CT so mainly forest roads but I’d love to explore a lot more of the country if I can. Advice on suspension and maybe a small lift would be appreciated. I’d love to do a full custom setup at some point but for not just regular aftermarket parts will have to do.

The point is go to the woods and figure out what you need. What works for us won't work for you. The best way to figure out what you need is to go out there and need it, make a list and go from there.

I would start with maintenance for the truck. Then just do regular camping gear like a ground tent and stove from Wal-Mart. Keeping stuff from sliding around while still accessible is half the battle for me. Get some basic recovery gear, like a shovel, a way to air down and back up, a full size spare and tire repair stuff.

I appreciate the input, I guess I should have been more clear, I’m not a complete novice I’ve done a good bit of local camping and off roading, and have quite a bit of experience working on vehicles/maintenance. I have the basic essentials, I’m more looking for advice on what gear to get or recommend brands/ones to stay away from. Again, I do appreciate the input that’s on me for not being specific in the post.
