8gb GPUs, like the 5060ti 8gb, are so much cheaper than 16gb ones these days so would it be enough?

These days a 5060ti 8gb is 280 pounds, meanwhile the 16gb is 400 pounds. AMd is similar. So should I just get the 8gb gpu instead, it's insanely better price per performance, but don't know if the vram is adequate.
SavedMartha@reddit
If you enjoy missing textures, incorrect lighting, stutters and low 1% and unbalanced raw performance to vram ratio then sure, waste the 280.
Riipp3r@reddit
Enough for... What?
1080p? Barely but yes. Might have to adjust settings though depending on game.
4k? No.

A good video I watched recently about the topic: https://youtu.be/agOFPSwbaiU?si=J2_NDNRZb3BmpMGD
My additional point on this video (copied my comment from that video here): I think a point tons of people are missing is, to fight the VRAM limiation, you do not need turn the whole preset down. Typically you just need to turn down the setting that affect the VRAM usage the most, so it will be texture quality (and of course RT is another setting that uses a lot of VRAM). Chances are, if you are on a 1080p display, lower texture quality probably won't be that noticable to begin with. Some games also allow to you turn model quality down but it sure will have a bigger impact on the graphics.

Exactly. I must confess I'm bit annoyed how all graphics subs always seems to fall in the same trap of mixing quality with resolution lately. Come on, the biggest benefit of gaming on PC is this possibility to fine-tune settings for your specific hardware.
Going further, even some modern integrate graphic can come into play when shared memory is accounted for. A game with everything down except textures on high may look pretty nice, but many people won't even try assuming they have a "weak board".

Was gonna link the same video. It answers the question posed by the OP

I bought my rtx 5060 looking for my backlog as many games i never played ran great 4k native or dlss with 60+ fps.
I was with a B550 and an 5600GT (pci-e 3.0). I saw many bottlenecks using more than 8gb vram. Changed for an 5700X (pci-e 4.0) and even using more than 8GB vRAM performs well for an entry card.
I'm using 2x16gb ddr4 3600mhz cl16, so this help too.
5060 is an 4060ti and/or an 3070 and/or an 2080, so it's very robust for many games.
I would go for an 5070 12gb rather than 5060ti 16gb.
Steam deck coming with 8gb vram and this rampocalypse feels that devs would be forced to optimize the games to run well on 8gb vram boards.
HyruleanKnight37@reddit
I'd watch Daniel Owen's recent video on this exact topic
tl;dr the 16GB model gives you a "premium" gaming experience with all the Nvidia bells and whistles at a high framerate, while the 8GB model forces you to lower your graphics settings and still hit a framerate deficit. This is despite both cards being identical otherwise.
Whiskeypants17@reddit
Some games/motherboards take a massive 40% performance hit when the hit the vram wall.
Some you can just turn it down from ultra settings to medium and get the fps back. You can cant even run 1080 at max quality without dropping from like 90fps to 50fps. But if your happy at medium quality no worries.
Hardware unboxed I think did a great video comparing the 5060ti 8gb and 16gb with the 9060xt 8gb and 16gb that goes over it. Can't find it at the moment but maybe a helpful reddit can.
RAF2018336@reddit
Literally somebody already linked a video of someone actually testing them so you can see the difference
Mr_Henry_Yau@reddit
That depends on what games you're planning to play and whether your current motherboard has a PCIe 5.0 x 16 slot or not. I'll wait for your reply before I give you my suggestions.
Einherier96@reddit
Depending on the games you play, 8gb vram is not future proof and can even bend you over these days already
Curius_pasxt@reddit
I just bought 5060 8gb single fan and I absolutely love it, it fits my 6.5L case
a4840639@reddit
Not really, the difference of VRAM usage between different resolutions might not be as big as many people imagined, it is especially complex when many people just use upscale anyway. Also 5060 (TI) is a very capable card and it can handle ray tracing decently well.
The recent example is Forza Horizon 6, the 16GB version of 5060TI just performs way better than the 8GB version in this game and you can still get very decent FPS with configs like Extreme or High+RT
Curius_pasxt@reddit
Extreme + RT etc will tank your fps way before the vram limit kicking in, 5060 8gb is a good entry level card for 1080p.
For 1440p? Yes I dont recommended it
a4840639@reddit
No, I am not talking about Extreme + RT (Also Extreme + RT is also playable on the 16GB model if you are on a 1080p display or use upscale on 1440p)
If you just check the performance difference between the Extreme (No RT) or High + RT, which are both way over 60fps even on 1440p on the 16GB model. You can see they are significantly slower on the 8GB model, even on 1080p
xagds@reddit
They are perfect for 1080 gaming. The 5060 ti is better for more 1440 stuff. And of course the 16gb even more so.
If money is right I would get the 5060 ti 8gb. Unless you know you are sticking with 1080 gaming. Then the base 5060 is fine.
PowerfulAgent9939@reddit
More than enough for 1080p, I game at 1920x1200 ultra on all games and get minimum 100fps before upscaling and frame gen
Yurgin@reddit
Yes, No, Maybe
It depends on the games you play and resolution.
I use on my TV-PC a 6600XT with 8GB which is fine for me since i only play JRPGs and old games at 60fps on it.
If you go for 1440p it could get rough depending on the games. 1080p should be fine for most games
buddyGG@reddit
I have a 5060 and I'm very happy with the card. I play most games @1440p (with DLSS) and there are just a handful of games where I need to tweak the settings a little.
In some games I have to lower down the textures but honestly the difference is so small, I really don't care.
But still, if you want to keep the card the next 3-5 years, I wouldn't cheap out on VRAM. Games will get much more VRAM intensiv with the upcoming release if the PS6 console and 8gb GPUs will start to struggle a lot.
Big-Salamander-2158@reddit
Now with a sale it’s 300€ for the 8gb 5060ti and 600€ for the 16gb version. At that price difference, I’d rather buy a new 300€ card in 3 years time and hope it has more vram.
Even the 9060xt is at its cheapest 420€, but usually around 450€.
lleyton05@reddit
It’ll handle 1080p fantastic and some 1440p as well
junu-munu00@reddit
the extra 120 pounds for a 16gb card isn't just a premium for better numbers, it is literally the entry fee to make sure your graphics card doesn't become a paperweight by next year. if you are on a strict budget skip nvidia entirely and look at an rx 9060 xt or a used card with at least 12gb to 16gb of vram. do not cheap out on memory right now or you will regret it instantly.
BrandonXYX@reddit
for 1080p and even light 1440p the 5060ti is very capable
