Wikipedia says that there "Central Macedonia / Κεντρική Μακεδονία" and "Eastern Macedonia and Thrace / Ανατολική Μακεδονία και Θράκη" as two separate regions. It is interesting that you decided to break up one of these regions and merge together with another, in order to create plain "Macedonia" as one region.

Haven’t seen the news, but it’s a fantastic place for a tourist. I had a blast for ten days some time ago.
AcroCANthrow-saurus@reddit
Okay, if I’m not counting where my heritage is from (the Aegean islands), I’d say Central Macedonia. Thessaloniki, ethnically diverse (I think, or maybe I’m confusing Thrace), got Mt. Athos, tons of history, interesting story in contemporary Greek history… it’s a cool place.
Peloponnesus gets points too for having the Maniots and Klefts. Plus the landmass itself.
God, I really gotta see more of Greece man…
Catman_192@reddit
Macedonia or islands, but I think that every region is beautiful there.

Aggravating_Fan_7322@reddit
I'm very biased, and I do love all the places I've been to around Greece, but Macedonia for me is #1, then the Aegean Islands (specifically Santorini), then probably Central Greece (specifically Attica) or Epirus.

first (& only) mention of Thrace. no one has said "Dodecanese" wtf...
(Saronic Islands, Thessaly, North Aegean, r the only other regions not mentioned).
black3rr@reddit
well you’re in r/AskBalkans and Dodecanese is farthest away from the balkans…
SOHONEYSAME@reddit (OP)
true.
(still, that doesn't stop some of them "insisting" we're part of the Balkan peninsula, lol).
but regardless, it "deserves" at least one mention...
Covekot1@reddit
Epirus. Tne beaches are far more beautiful compared to Chalkidiki. Also the people are more chill if I tell them where I'm coming from.
Dizzy-Scientist4782@reddit
Wait to tell people from Macedonia where you from...
Covekot1@reddit
I use North Macedonia with them because I want to be good guest.
atzitzi@reddit
What do you mean you use North Macedonia with them? What else would you be using?
Tringl@reddit
A lot of them are saying just Macedonia
Emotional_Fan239@reddit
It makes sense
Tringl@reddit
Even if people say it to provoke, it doesn't matter. Tourism brings money. People are just people, good and bad apples are everywhere anywhere. Why bother? There are far worse problems around the world than arguing about a name.
Emotional_Fan239@reddit
exactly
MartinSK3@reddit
Politic in one word.
PhantomO1@reddit
i mean im greek and usually use macedonia to refer to the country, because quite frankly, i cant be bothered to say "north" every time
not like there's any confusion about the two being different as far as i and people i know are concerned, the prespes agreement made that clear after all
atzitzi@reddit
Why do you bother and say Macedonia then, say just "North" if it is a matter of being lazy, it is shorter. Because, as a Greek when I say North Macedonia I mean the North part of Macedonia. When I will refer to the country I'll do it the hard way: the country of North Macedonia.
PhantomO1@reddit
okay buddy
MartinSK3@reddit
For your information, a lot of Greeks accept Macedonia as a country. However, when I go on vacation, I go to recharge my batteries. If I wanted to debate politics, I wouldn't do it with an ordinary guy—I would go to your Parliament instead.
Tringl@reddit
All studied people including those from North Macedonia, recognize the country but not the name. They just don't bother to argue; it's not worth the effort between civilians.
MartinSK3@reddit
Absolutely🙌
Covekot1@reddit
Guess.
atzitzi@reddit
😁
Yarrrak31@reddit
How do they usually react?
MartinSK3@reddit
Basically, we have strong trading relations with Greece. A lot of Greeks living in northern Greece and around Thessaloniki regularly visit our country for trading, shopping, traveling, and so on. Between the countries the politics is on the next level, but thorugh the peoples mindset is something different.
Covekot1@reddit
To be clear, I don't have any problems with the natives and always I try to use greek words and use North Macedonia. But in the Makedonia region sometimes they roll eyes or they are just cold. In the Epirus they don't care and they are just regular friendly. I had a lot of long friendly conversations with people from Epirus compared to the few normal conversations in Makedonia.

What are the american equivalents of Greece? - Florida (crazy people) - Alabama (incest people) - Utah (religious nutcases) - California (woke people)
littlecastor@reddit
There aren't any exact equivalents, but we do have some regional stereotypes, like:
Thessaloniki: Either veeeery chill or religious/nationalist caricatures
I'm from the Peloponnese btw (not the western part); we're seen as conservative and unfriendly for Greek standards.

Cool_Guy_Chazz@reddit
Greek Macedonia is split into Central Macedonia, Western Macedonia and Eastern Macedonia (and Thrace). So any of this would be more correct.
S-onceto@reddit
I don't get why maps like these don't show the actual regions and instead combine them.
TheNinjaNarwhal@reddit
These is the official geographical regions of Greece. The eastern, central and western are either subregions to be more specific when talking about an area or a different split of Greece for a different reason (like a "district" that has different governing policies and people in charge). There's no combination happening here.
S-onceto@reddit
These seem to be the traditional regions of Greece rather than the modern ones: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regions_of_Greece
TheNinjaNarwhal@reddit
I feel like you didn't read what I wrote😅 These are the districts I mentioned, they're a different split for a different reason. They're administrative regions, for governing purposes. I can't find an English link so apologies, but here's the wiki link for the geographical regions:
https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%93%CE%B5%CF%89%CE%B3%CF%81%CE%B1%CF%86%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AC_%CE%B4%CE%B9%CE%B1%CE%BC%CE%B5%CF%81%CE%AF%CF%83%CE%BC%CE%B1%CF%84%CE%B1_%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%82_%CE%95%CE%BB%CE%BB%CE%AC%CE%B4%CE%B1%CF%82
Here's another link where both are mentioned in a schoolbook:
https://ebooks.edu.gr/ebooks/v/html/8547/2278/Geografia_E-Dimotikou_html-empl/indexC_34.html
We use the geographical split 99% of the time in every day speech, that's how we learnt the regions, the prefectures and their cities in geography in school.
For example, no one uses "western Greece" when talking about regions in Greece, it's either Peloponnisos or Sterea Ellada. If someone mentions "Western Greece" in an everyday conversation they'd be talking about the general Western area of Greece, including the islands, not an official administrative area of Greece. To be honest I didn't even remember that part existed😅
Also Thraki is always Thraki. That administrative region that's a combination is only used in political/government/relevant conversations.
Cool_Guy_Chazz@reddit
My brother in Christ, you’re making this more complicated than it needs to be. The map in the post shows the geographic/historic regions of Greece, while what I mentioned are the political/administrative regions of Greece. It’s really not that complicated.
TheNinjaNarwhal@reddit
That's... What I said from the start. My first comment was exactly that. The other person tried to say that the map in the post is old and the administrative is the only correct one._.
Cool_Guy_Chazz@reddit
The actual regions are purely administrative; they do not share a common regional identity in the way that the geographic regions do. Greece originally did not have regions—it was divided into 52 prefectures. The regions were created later purely for administrative and management purposes. Therefore, when discussing culture and traditions, we refer to the geographic or historic regions of Greece, whereas for politics and administration, we use the political and administrative regions.
