Why can’t we have resealable biscuit packets?
Posted by Mrs_Peee@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 195 comments
Yet another pack of biscuits that went soft after only a few were eaten. Folded the pack really well to try & save them using all my origami skills, but alas, I failed in my quest.
It’s the 21st century, surely some young whizz kid designer can devise such a product!
But til then I’ll either eat them all in one go, or feed them to my very grateful crows
Affect-Electrical@reddit
You're not eating your biscuits fast enough.
Dadaballadely@reddit
I've become quite handy with the little spring onion rubber bands

Thank fuck, there's options for interest free lending on the bag clips
simian8810@reddit
These are great if everyone in your household has been properly socialised to open packets without tearing them all the way down to the bottom
MountainMuffin1980@reddit
Yeah that's fair. The way my wife opens some biscjot packets...
Darwen85@reddit
I use these on everything that opens and can't be resealed, even if it doesn't go off, the amount of times I've open the cupboard and a bag of pasta or rice has fallen out and these little things have saved me a clean up must be in the high single figures.
grosspersona@reddit
they are essential. Rice, pasta, cereal, crisps and iif you ever find a newborn baby in your kitchen then you can clamp an umbilical cord with them
g0ldcd@reddit
Yep - just got 2 packs of those chucked in (what was) the kitchen fruitbowl.
They're just on everything.
Even if I'm just chucking a bag of soup in the freezer, it'll get a clip (until it's at least frozen).
Only possible downside, is that I do need to eat a far number of biscuits from a fresh pack, to get enough slack to seal. It's a real hardship in my life.
MountainMuffin1980@reddit
100% the same here. Sugar bags etc too!
DingoBingoWimbo@reddit
These tings R the best fam
KeyPhilosopher8629@reddit
I 3d print these when I make multicolour prints. Purge into these rather than having waste
happyhippohats@reddit
We do they're called biscuit tins
CheeryBottom@reddit
Laughs in seamstress 😂😂😂 All our biscuit tins are filled with my sewing supplies!
Far_Bad_531@reddit
Patrick Grant has entered the chat…
oscarx-ray@reddit
All my sewing kits are filled with Digestives! Please, I need to replace so many buttons. Please make this madness end!
colin_staples@reddit
Use digestive biscuits as buttons.
And then you have rations in an emergency situation.
Impossible_Disk_43@reddit
But they'll go soft and break apart.
jamesckelsall@reddit
Hobnobs won't.
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
Just resist the urge whilst out in public, jeans around ankles on the local park is frowned upon...
oscarx-ray@reddit
You marvellous bastard! The answer was right in front of me this whole time!
butterypowered@reddit
Between your username and your hobby, if you aren’t a Pratchett reader then you should be. 😆
CheeryBottom@reddit
😂😂😂😂😂. I’m a seamstress that sews. Caught many a poor bloke out, that has. They all left with well patched up socks though.
butterypowered@reddit
🤣 I didn’t even realise until now that the phrase pre-dates his Discworld books, but apparently so.
Well, may your thread never tangle, and may you avoid any unwanted pricks!
UKMegaGeek@reddit
Only the Danish ones, surely?
Arnoave@reddit
Sounds like you need to increase your biscuit intake, especially around Christmas
CheeryBottom@reddit
Absolutely. It’s the only way.
Arnoave@reddit
Btw, I'm assuming your nickname is a Discworld reference?
CheeryBottom@reddit
Yes!!!
Exciting_Football_76@reddit
(Are you a Pratchett fan? Asking because Cheery little Bottom. Not the "seamstress" mention 😹)
pburgess22@reddit
A clothes peg will do the job to a point.
MoominMai@reddit
Better than anything else I’ve found as a single person trying to lose weight is to FREEZE THEM! Just seal the original pack with sellotape and put in a freezer bag and they’ll last several more weeks. If they’re expensive more fancy ones you want to last longer then cover them with cling film in twos then tightly wrap foil around them before sealing in a freezer bag and they’ll be good for months!
Cold_Philosophy@reddit
I’m sure you’re right but that’s something I’m sure I’ll never need to try. Left-over biscuits, to me, are the same as left-over wine. Don’t exist.
Ratbag321@reddit
Except that frozen biscuits are generally DELICIOUS!
MoominMai@reddit
100%! Especially the chocolate covered ones! 😋
Ratbag321@reddit
Millionaire's Shortbread....😋 - so much nicer frozen...
happyhippohats@reddit
That sounds like a lot of effort when you could hust put them in a biscuit tin
KeremyJyles@reddit
They'll go "stale" as quickly in there is they do just sitting in an opened packet.
happyhippohats@reddit
No they won't.
KeremyJyles@reddit
And yet they do.
MoominMai@reddit
Except they still go soft in a few days in a biscuit tin. And it’s hardly much effort to put the pack in a freezer bag then throw it in the freezer lol
happyhippohats@reddit
You beed to vet a better biscuit tin. If it's airtight they don't go stale (soft)
marsman@reddit
Read this perfectly as I have a cold too..
happyhippohats@reddit
Lol
BoltersnRivets@reddit
Impossible! Everyone knows the biscuit themed sewing tin spontaneously appears in the spare kitchen drawer when you buy the house
Theratchetnclank@reddit
I use a glass vacuum pack tub, pulls all the air out and keeps them fresh for weeks.
originallyale@reddit
Came here to say this! I personally use a resealable Tupperware box because it fits in my cupboard better but I remember my grandparents never had soft biscuits and always used the same tin, from when I was a baby to when they passed away and I was in my late 20s!
soitspete@reddit
We do they're called packet clips
blueroses8000@reddit
I don’t find they do a good job, it’s better than nothing but there’s still air inside them and exposing the biscuits to it. Whenever I’ve eaten biscuits at someone’s house who uses tins they’re always soft.
GalacticDoc@reddit
Came just to say this. Less plastic also.
behold-my-titties@reddit
It's like they figured it out ages ago.
Brave_Opportunity_67@reddit
They exist in the US but they also have much bigger packs of biscuits. I've always been fine with a biscuit tin or a clip!
Spiritual_Web_8136@reddit
Eat the pack in one go, problem solved
jawide626@reddit
1 pack = 1 serving
suafdrog87@reddit
I doubt youd pay for them
Doctor_Womble@reddit
Chocolate Hobnobs have never lingered long enough in my house for that to be a problem.
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
This. Who buys biscuits that are that shit, that they have chance to go off?
When opening a pack, you need to eat 6 minimum, to get a decent bit of protective covering on that top biscuit. But, for what it's worth, I may as well not bother, as I'm back within an hour or so, dunking more of um.
guareber@reddit
The trick is routine. You grab 2 biscuits while your tea is brewing, close the pack and put it away. By then, tea is done. Repetition wins.
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
I feel that I'd just make more brews, to compensate.
I did similar the first time I stopped smoking, said I'd only smoke with a beer. Ended up buying 4 cans and 10 smokes on the way home from work every evening 🤷♂️
gyroda@reddit
I purposefully buy plain digestives because I cannot help myself around an open packet of hobnobs.
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
I stopped buying them for months, as I knew I had a problem. I've relapsed, I'm back on um 🤷♂️
icebox_Lew@reddit
They really do go down as easy as a packet of crisps
LambonaHam@reddit
Right? This sounds like a (n eating) skill issue on OPs part.
Clockwork-Armadillo@reddit
I've had to ban myself from buying choclate hob knows because I will just scoff the whole pack with a single cup of tea
Jexii-x@reddit
I just put the biscuit pack inside zip seal food bags, and squeeze air out. Then just reuse the bag for next pack. I do the same thing for packets of cheese twists, crackers and such. Works a charm and don’t have to find extra space for tins/tubs.
FewAnybody2739@reddit
Why wouldn't you eat the whole packet in one go?
bunkyboy91@reddit
This is like when chefs say "a splash of spare wine". Where am I finding spare wine?
insanityarise@reddit
Use a squash (cordial), does the same job, doesn't cook off precious alcohol.
Silly-Industry1527@reddit
You ever play minesweeper at a Wetherspoons on a night out?
bunkyboy91@reddit
I assume it's a shots drinking game as opposed to me dragging a 90s computer on the night out?
Oh-reality-come-back@reddit
It’s when you finish people’s left over drinks. Or at least last I heard. Too gross for me to be honest
bunkyboy91@reddit
That sounds so foul XD
wintermute023@reddit
“Picked up something nasty in Spoons” really can mean a lot of things.
SpaceWomble64@reddit
This is the only serious answer 🙂
emmjaybeeyoukay@reddit
Get some IKEA BEVARA food clips. They're available on Amazon as well as the Ikea site.
PreferenceAnxious449@reddit
It would raise the price of biscuits and reduce demand on biscuits in a single move.
IntrepidMaybe8579@reddit
Clothes pegs m8
SpecialistGas8262@reddit
There's a cunning invention called a food bag clip. Useful for many things that you would optimally save for later, but may not.
Sxn747Strangers@reddit
Did you push the packet with the opened end against the wall or some other immovable object?
Fickle_Pirate5617@reddit
For the same reason we can't have cleaning/bum wipes that come out singularly.
MONEY.
Stale bickie means more bickie buying.
TruePineapple6@reddit
Food clips. You might have to eat a few more biscuits to make room for the clips to grip, but they keep the biscuits fresh. Works for crisps and tortillas too. I can't stand the taste of biscuits in a tin that are all mixed up
ExcitementForgotten9@reddit
Just get a large foor container box and put the biscuits in there.
Goldf_sh4@reddit
Because then we'd buy less of them.
Busy-Doughnut6180@reddit
To encourage you to eat more, so you buy them more often. I'm convinced this is why they stopped making bags of sweets and chocolate with removable stickers on the back.
BrainlessPackhorse@reddit
The packets are so small I don't think we've ever had any left after 1 sitting!?
StaticUsernamesSuck@reddit
You just suck at putting biscuits away, lady
I've never had this problem, even keeping biscuits for months.
If love to see a picture of how you regularly put them away
yearsofpractice@reddit
Because my kids continue to be naughty and I tell them this one of the reasons we can’t have nice things.
norty-dc@reddit
"Bag closures" are a thing, a couple of quid on Amazon, multiple uses, crisp bags, partially used bags of vege's in the freezer, pasta, rice and...biscuits!!
Latte-Addict@reddit
You said it yourself OP, you need to eat them in one go, I mean it's not that hard to do this with a packet of choc digestives considering how much smaller they've got over the years :)
DrNick2012@reddit
Reseal?
Rumours of my self control have been greatly exaggerated
steven71@reddit
It's a plot by Big Biscuit Tin inc.
Etheria_system@reddit
Biscuit tin or a little clip - I like these rainbow metal ones from Amazon. Have them all around the house and end up using them for all sorts
metechgood@reddit
Instead of "Why can't we have".... go out, invent them and then try to introduce them into the market. Usually your question will be answered.
FilthyPetitePrincess@reddit
biscuit packets need an upgrade
oldymouldy86@reddit
Just eat the whole packet at once
bumpoleoftherailey@reddit
It’s probably the work of the same bastard who stopped putting lids on hummus tubs.
pacifistmercenary@reddit
Clearly I have never had a packet of biscuits last long enough to have discovered this issue!
Unfair_Original_2536@reddit
Treat yourself to a sealer, a couple of quid and you'll be resealing all your packages with joy and aplomb.
huskydaisy@reddit
You don't see enough aplomb these days.
Unfair_Original_2536@reddit
I'm bringing it back.
MixPlus@reddit
Cut and Clip. I cut the end of the packet, take the internal packaging and biscuits out, put the biscuits back in and clip. I have 40 clips of various sizes in a box. I cut and clip everything. Cheese, nuts, seeds, frozen fruit, bags of salad, rice, coffee, pasta, sugar, crackers. I get very annoyed when there isn't enough overhang at the end of packaging to cut and clip.
TheDogsMum@reddit
If I can’t close the pack up well enough we put the pack in a food bag. I’m not a fan of biscuit tins.
Supertack@reddit
There is plastic in our brains, our balls and our umbilical cords. Use a tin.
LambonaHam@reddit
Ridiculous idea.
Then you'd just get micro metals in your testicles instead. You'd be fucked if Magneto is nearby...
FornyHucker22@reddit
tin balls does sound appealing 🧐🙂
Ancient-Awareness115@reddit
Would they clang as you walk
Counterpoint-4@reddit
If you have to be gluten free but buy normal biscuits for visitors - they eat one, maybe none, maybe two and the rest of the pack gets wasted.
Mr_Bumcrest@reddit
Why don't you get an airtight box to put them in. Maybe some sort of tin? For biscuits?
Neddlings55@reddit
Because we have already invented airtight food storage containers.
Resealable packets cost more to manufacture which may end up driving the cost of the product up.
pafrac@reddit
It's probably Mondelez. So the price will go up regardless.
Pleasant_Fennel_5435@reddit
But some price will go up higher than the others
effefille@reddit
Hair ties work well
FangoFan@reddit
Don't fold, twist.
(plastic clip is optional)
MealComplex8672@reddit
You take the top off, turn it upside down and push it into the pack to stop them going soft
councilsoda@reddit
This is the way 100% ☝️
Defiant_Attempt1469@reddit
You're supposed to fold the end and push them against the back of the cupboard.
JopeOfOtts@reddit
Or the shelf next to your sofa… just saying 🤭
1968Bladerunner@reddit
This is what I do. Coupled with a tendency to only have one pack open at a time & they usually only last me a week, so don't have time to go stale or soft.
Kotetsu999@reddit
Check your house. The doors probably wide open.
concrete_marshmallow@reddit
Ziplock bag, suck the air out & seal.
Jobs a good'un.
Soapy_Von_Soaps@reddit
Why aren't you putting the open packet into a zip lock bag to keep them fresh?
BiscuitsAndMilk0@reddit
Twizzle the end and push it against a wall. Like you do with everything else.
Zealousideal-Sail893@reddit
It's down to cost. Get yourself a good biscuit barrel and enjoy your biscuits for longer.
toby1jabroni@reddit
Get yourself a tin or some tupperware.
calmeilles@reddit
We used to. They were redesigned to make them cheaper and as a side benefit make you eat them faster before they go stale and so buy more.
Find something to use as a biscuit tin.
kitti_wake@reddit
Does anyone remember when for the chocolate packets, like malteasers or something, they would have little stickers so you could fold it over and stick it down? Or was that a fever dream? I imagine it's both a cost cutting thing and also yhey cabt have any type of seperate sticker because look at the state of places because of those E-cig stickers.
NibblyPig@reddit
There's a DEFRA initiative now to charge companies based on how much packaging they use (and what type), while this sounds good it means they will scrimp to the absolute minimum they can get away with. It's annoying because large yogurts used to come with a plastic lid you could reattach and now they don't anymore :-|
InkedDoll1@reddit
We had to buy a few of the stretchy plastic reusable lids for yogurts. But, I hear a sneaky pringles lid may also work...
AnastasiaRomanot@reddit
That was when the larger bags were big enough to be considered “share size”. Now they’re about 3 Maltesers extra and 4x the price.
kitti_wake@reddit
Hmm I think you're onto something there...
Cult-Film-Fan-999@reddit
Pretty sure some foods still have them!
kitti_wake@reddit
Really?! I'm clearly not buying the right products then! (Or am blind). I often use the sticky labels they put on the bakery bag items to stick the packets down again but that's the closest I've come to using stickers to reseal any foods today.
RaggedToothRat@reddit
Packets of pasta from Asda still have the stickers. I know M&Ms used to have them too, I'll have to go buy some to investigate.
kitti_wake@reddit
Ohhh yes the pasta does have them on - I was thinking more of chocolates and things though which is why I hadn't seen any. You're right that m&ms definitely used to, I've not bought them in a while though. I think all the mainstream brands of those chocoalte/sweet type packets now don't though? I think those types of food actually need them more than dry pasta tbh.
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
Oh, that's what it was for? 🤷♂️
millerz72@reddit
It’s all a conspiracy by big biscuit to get you to buy more biscuits.
Urbanyeti0@reddit
Either use a sealable tub, or you can get these from Ikea which are great for all packets Bevara
RaggedToothRat@reddit
Years ago, my husband bought me a fancy tall tin of biscuits for my birthday. Unfortunately, it's so narrow that only rich tea biscuits fit in it. Last year we were waiting in an airport lounge and saw the same brand of expensive biscuits in tins, so we bought three more in different colours, but chose wide ones that fit hobnobs and digestives.
Visual_Addendum_577@reddit
Because of big cookie jar. People called my a conspiracy nut, but now you're seeing it, and it's too late
justdont7133@reddit
Twist the pack and close with a clothes peg, or just eat them all
missOmum@reddit
Use silicone reusable lids, they are great!
Disgruntled__Goat@reddit
The biscuit tin answer is the correct one. But if you inexplicably don’t have one, what you’re supposed to do is this:
c===c=pineapple_on_a_stick@reddit
Because big biscuit know we have no self control.
ispcrco@reddit
We use clothes pegs.
vertper1@reddit
Ziplock bags were invented in 1968
whoops53@reddit
Biscuit tin? They have rubber seals around the lid to keep it airtight
gardenpeasandcarrots@reddit
Keep some masking tape handy to seal packets
autobulb@reddit
A pack of 10 plastic clips costs about a pound. Some even come in fun designs. I have a bunch that live on the fridge with a magnetic holder that looks like a fast food fry packet and each of the clips are individual fries. Cost less than £2 on AliExpress. But the regular ones are at any discount store.
Dissidant@reddit
Roll the end of the packet and use a elastic band or washing peg
RiskyRabbit@reddit
Yes but makes up stand out on the shelf and sell more, no?
DameKumquat@reddit
Rubber bands exist. As do biscuit tins, ziploc bags, etc.
Given resealable rice and pasta bags are invariably crap, I'd prefer they keep.biscuits cheap and not bother trying.
cdh79@reddit

CoastHefty6373@reddit
You just need a big tub or box, or if you have sandwich bags... just dump the pack in that, problem solved.
Feeling_Boot_5242@reddit
You’re doing it wrong. You’re not eating enough of them. You have to eat enough to be able to swizzle the top of the packet closed. Or like me smash the full pack in one
Princes_Slayer@reddit
We use a knife to chop through the pack maybe two biscuits down, then use that end like a cap on the rest of the pack
Prior-Beach-3311@reddit
I do like the cap method
BeingOtherwise7829@reddit
Because we're British so they expect you to have a biscuit tin as standard.
Prior-Beach-3311@reddit
And to eat them all before they go stale

Sa-SaKeBeltalowda@reddit
It would make more sense to sell digestives in Pringles-like tubes. Who knows, maybe we would have flying cars by now….
DigitalDunc@reddit
I like the idea, but for me it’d be pointless. My bestie would eat them long before the environment got to them.
Consistent_Squash590@reddit
What sort of amateur effort is that that you don’t finish a packet in one go? Try harder ! 😹
FreddiesNightmare65@reddit
Put them in a zip lock bag with all the air removed using a straw.
Spiritual-Cost-1912@reddit
Pull the little red string bit gently so the top part comes off neatly, eat as many biscuits as required and then fold over the packet, and then slide the ‘lid’ back over them. Works on all round or square packets. If yours doesn’t have the red string bit, use a knife to cut off a section and same result. Always slides back over with ease.
Dreadheaddanski@reddit
I wrap my biscuits into little bundles with cling film... Then I don't eat all the biscuits in one go too
MsKittyPowers@reddit
Take the top of the packet, turn it upside down and slide it back into the tube. Or just fold it and wedge it up against the side of the cupboard lol
Proud_Cookie@reddit
They do it on purpose so the remainder go to waste and you are forced to buy more! Convince me I'm wrong!
(Long-term cynic, over here!)
crowort@reddit
This is definitely true for breakfast cereal.
deletethewife@reddit
I use a air tight jar, any kind of tin or Tupperware to use as a biscuit tin will work. I’ve used a Costco food bag before and also sellotape to seal a pack.
Broken_Woman20@reddit
It’s probably a cost related thing. Supermarket basic biscuits are about 60p a packet, it would probably add quite a bit of cost to add a resealable top. Why not just get yourself a biscuit tin or a tub to put them in? That’s what I do.
Ecstatic-World1237@reddit
Mate, wasteage is good for those whose wealth is derived from comsumerism.
G-reeper66@reddit
That's why we had a biscuit tin that was air tight as a kid, still use one today as I hate soft biscuits. Clips also work!
Space_Cowby@reddit
I thought they all came in single portion size so this is why they dont need to be resealable :)
Original_Document748@reddit
Why dont you put them in a sealable tupperwear container ?
dynze@reddit
twist and place against the wall tiles is too efficient
Mustbejoking_13@reddit
The issue here is not the lack of reseal (get some tupperware, ffs)... But why are you not eating all of the biscuits?!
eunderscore@reddit
So you eat them quicker before they go off
arashi256@reddit
