What's the simplest legal way to identify who keeps letting their dog foul my front garden?

Dog poo advice please!
Hello all
For the past few months, something has repeatedly been fouling my front garden. In the morning I'll occasionally find dog poo on the grass, and understandably I'm getting fed up with it.
After it happened a few times I put up a polite sign saying "Please be respectful; no dog fouling" with a dog fouling symbol. The problem stopped for a while, although I don't know whether that was because of the sign or just coincidence.
The issue is that it seems to happen overnight or very early in the morning, so I've never actually seen who or what is responsible.
I'm now considering setting up some sort of low key camera; perhaps a wildlife camera, motion camera or simple CCTV. Mainly to answer two questions:
- Is it definitely a dog and not a cat or another animal?
- If it is a dog, can I identify the dog and owner?
I don't want a full surveillance setup or to spend a fortune. I'm also conscious of UK privacy laws and would only want to monitor my own front garden. The purpose would simply be to identify what is happening and, if it is a local dog owner, politely ask them to stop.
Has anyone dealt with something similar? Any recommendations for a simple, inexpensive setup or general advice?
I should also mention that I have a dog myself, love dogs, and completely understand that accidents happen. I've always cleaned up after my own dog though, and I feel that's the bare minimum any owner should do. Ideally they would also take their dog somewhere more appropriate to toilet in the first place.
Thanks.

We really need to change the law. File the dogs DNA record number on their chip. DNA test dog fouling. Send fine and all associated costs automatically to the owner. A DNA test costs almost as much as vaccines now.
Jacktheforkie@reddit
Yeah, would save me stepping in shit every time I have to park late , and add on as well as costs that offenders must spend a week picking up shit piles
TheLightStalker@reddit
Litter pick the victims Parish. Sure.
Jacktheforkie@reddit
Yeah, people might be more inclined to lift their dogs poo if it means avoiding dealing with cold poos
Salt_Track_4763@reddit
Prob cat shit
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
I have wondered that but they usually bury it
Salt_Track_4763@reddit
They really don't.
pgnlzbth@reddit
Have you got a doorbell cam you can move over night to a position that will see the spot where it happens?
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
unfortunately not
WetDogDeodourant@reddit
For me it would be;
Get a camera that turns on recording when people/animals enter garden.
Identify culprit
3.a. If wild animal - respond appropriately to scenario
3.b. If pet and owner, put a sign up next to the ‘no fouling’ sign saying ‘That includes you and .’ Where Betty and rover are the owner and pet’s names respectfully.

love it
Responsible_News577@reddit
Put up a sign saying strong weedkiller on your grass that will kill your dog if ingested
Interesting-Look-381@reddit
I have an Aqara camera from Amazon, £35. Linked to HomeKit and my HomePod+Apple Cloud stores footage up to 10 days. I don’t see what the privacy laws are if you are surveilling your own property? Even if there was no dog fouling you have the right to record as much as you want. The issue is what you do with the footage.

Trail cam/doorbell cam
semorebunz@reddit
trail cam
had the same , local ned flanders church goer thought its ok to bring the dog by for a shit in the dark cus no ones looking , prick
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
OMG that's really disgusting. Good on you for catching him. What did you do in the end? And do you have a recommendation of a trail cam?
WetDogDeodourant@reddit
Would a ring doorbell or similar have sight coverage in the dog in action? Because that would notify you as it happened.
Adorable_Week7181@reddit
I got a eufy camera on the front door and soon saw the local idiot letting his dog shit all over pathways. Sent it to local social media and it has abruptly stopped
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
Well done you! Was the cost of the Eufy worth it and would you recommend it?
Adorable_Week7181@reddit
Much better than ring doorbells as they have no subscription and store everything on a memory card (found out the hard way as I now have a ring doorbell that’s a paperweight) . Also got a pet and garden cam so I can keep an eye on the dog and they link up well.
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
Are the pet and garden cam the same brand or something else?
Adorable_Week7181@reddit
Yeah they all run on the WiFi via an app, check out the website, I would wait for a sale if you can as they can be expensive though. I learned about it through a subreddit you could search that too
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
Be aware that in doing this, it’s usually obvious which house it was filmed from so the antisocial people in question will likely know it’s you who filmed them & publicly shamed them.
Adorable_Week7181@reddit
Thank you, we used the face identifier and described the dogs so it wasn’t obvious where we lived.
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
Good shout. You can never be too sure the lengths dodgy folk will go to when they’re caught out. :)
Fanjo_mcclanjo@reddit
Wildlife motion detection cams arent that expensive. Think i got one for 35-40 a while back.
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
Good to know. Does it record images?
Fanjo_mcclanjo@reddit
Yeah, they take an SD or micro sd card. Weigh about as much as a phone and maybe twice the size. Was handy to catch some allotment thieves a while back
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
Ooh great catch! Can you remember what make yours was?
Fanjo_mcclanjo@reddit
Sadly not. It was back when I still used amazon. Was a camouflage kinda colour
Ravdoggydog@reddit
I got 2 of these last week and they are excellent https://ebay.us/m/1frOPc
insertitherenow@reddit
Could be a fox. Easy to tell as fox poop is very pointy at the end and dogs poop ain’t.
InternationalJump705@reddit
Cayenne pepper sprinkled liberally on dry nights will solve this in a non lethal way 👊

interesting idea
BerryOk966@reddit
Eufy solar powered cameras are on offer in Costco just now. Subscription free and they use AI to recognise repeat faces.
I doubt uk privacy laws extend to protecting thr privacy of animals since they dont have the funds to sue you so crack on.
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
Yes, was thinking Eufy. Still a bit pricey for what I'm hoping will be a one-off capture.
Tirno93@reddit
We have the indoor cameras, they cost about £30 + and SD card, record when there’s motion and are easy to set up and play back. Just pop one in the window?
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
*slaps forehead* this is a brilliant simple solution. Do you have to be a member to shop at Costco? Or did you get yours from somewhere else?
Tirno93@reddit
I got them from Amazon - one of the cheaper Apple Home compatible (not required) options and they work well. I’ve never tried anything else so can’t recommend as a comparison to anything else, but they’ve been good for me.
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
thank you
_Hoping_For_Better_@reddit
I thought the was a specific reasonably active subreddit just to identify animal poop, but I can't find it now. r/animalid allows scat photos.
For the Camera Reolink ones are often on sale and check ones can save images to an SD card with no subscription that you sometimes get with other brands. On offer they are cheaper than the lowest spec wildlife cams, plus you can view live on your phone.
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
thank you
missyrainbow12@reddit
Do like everyone and get a ring camera
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
I considered it, but Ring has subscription costs and I'm really hoping to capture a one off image and then sort it out once and for all.
PantsPartyPirate@reddit
Tapo is a one off cost with an optional subscription. You just need to put a memory card in.
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
thank you

Its the sort of thing that would make me stay up all night. It would be absolutely worth it.

Could be a cat though get one of those Wildlife cameras that are battery powered they are fairly cheap like 30 - 40 quid for a half decent one
Zig07@reddit
probably a fox. They will mark territory. Maybe try fox repellent spray.
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
would be interesting if it turns out to be a fox
Additional-Guard-211@reddit
I have a TAPO battery camera fixed to the soffits of my house. Battery lasts circa 6 months (obvs less if there are lots of people in shot). It doesn’t record unless there is motion, person, car or pet enters a specified area (which i have set to my properly boundary). If there is a specifc bit of the image (like a neighbours window or whatever) that you want to hide, a “privacy zone” can be set where it it blanks out that section from view and all recording. I have set mine to just make a little noise, just to let people know its there. You can set mine to do 24 hour recording which takes a picture every few seconds, but it kills the battery the more frequently you set the picture frequency. I would get that, about £80 i think it was, plus the SD card, you don’t need a big one as it only records a few seconds at a time.
badgerandcheese@reddit
\^\^ This! Tapo is great - I have a powered one that sits inside (no battery needed) pointing outside to my front gate/door. The indoor one is super cheap if you have a window with good visibility to the front, OP. Indoor one is just £16 + SD card.
Mine runs 24 hours a day and I get around 7-10 days rolling, plus alerts - so hopefully you'll get an alert or scrub the footage to try to pinpoint when it happens!
Tip: Disable night mode (it causes reflections if the camera is pointing through the window) - as long as there's a streetlight nearby, you should also be able to get nighttime footage too :)
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
thank you
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
Thank you, have not heard of this, will look into it
ross-dirext-words137@reddit
You don't really need to worry to much about UK privacy laws as a individual. Especially if the camera is aiming at your front garden and the public street. More issues if captures private spaces.
Just get a cheap ring camera from cex or another second hand retailer.
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
Second hand is a good idea. I just don't want to pay a subscription fee as I'm hoping to get a one off image and deal with it once and for all
Batteredsoss@reddit
Camera and post it through the postbox at 3am alongside a going off rape alarm. Works well for pricks that leave them barking in their gardens as well.
Hundred percent success rate so far.
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
Bwah hah hah hah! Love the directness of this solution
Neither_Process_7847@reddit
Could be a fox?
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
Maybe. Need images to find out!
Plyphon@reddit
Ring camera. If you set it to alert you when there is movement, you can the speak to who (or whatever) is fouling to provide discouragement.
Neddlings55@reddit
Take a pic of the poo and ask either this group, or a wildlife group, for ID. Rule out wildlife first.
If it turns out to be dog shit, then get a camera.
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
Yes, there is a chance it might not be dog poo
LilacScentedStoat@reddit
As an interim, I think I'd just lean my.phone up the window filming the garden. It won't be a great image, but modern phone camera probably good enough to see if it's a person with a dog, stray cat, stray dog etc etc.
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit (OP)
I like this simplicity of this but I'd have to somehow leave it on all night and I don't think that would work
Practical-Command634@reddit
Send a sample of the poo to 23 and me or whatever the doggy equivalent is. Get the DNA results (proof). Start creeping about following local dog walker, strike up a conversation and pluck a hair from each dog you come across (under the pretence of petting the dog and pluck a hair) send the samples to 23 and me or whatever. Compare the samples
Step 4, profit....
All depends on how determined you are and how much you're willing to spend, both time and cash lol .
Past-Obligation1930@reddit
Could well be a fox. Foxes crap everywhere.
Fantastic_Back3191@reddit
Just film it, make sure only your own property is in view. Plenty of cheap cameras available.
doegrey@reddit
Put another sign next to it “CCTV recordings will be submitted to police”.
