Is there any reason for me to not get a Prius?

I'm 22 and I'm looking to buy my first car. Until now I've driven my parents' Toyota Sienna. However they don't allow me to go more than an hour away from our city and the MPG on the Sienna is horrendous so I'm looking to buy my own car.
Literally all I care about is getting from point A to point B with a high MPG and low maintenance costs and I don't want the car to cost more than $12k (preferably less). I don't care about fancy cars or if my car is ugly. Basically I want to spend as little on my car as possible when accounting for everything (cost of car, gas, insurance, maintenance, etc). I wouldn't even own a car if it weren't necessary here in the US.
Are there any cars that are better for me? Here a used Prius costs $8k to $12k. I know I could get a different beater for $5k or less but the MPG would likely be much lower so the Prius seems more worth it to me because it will eventually pay for itself
rallydemon@reddit
Do you hate cars and driving? If so the Prius is the perfect car. If not buy sonething else.
PetriDishCocktail@reddit
The new Prius is quite quick, especially in all-wheel drive, and it has approximately 200 horsepower.
Marsupialize@reddit
The new one isn’t bad at all it’s just a normal ass ride
Rough-Transition-954@reddit
The new Prius is a fun car to drive with plenty of pep.
The downside is that they are expensive, especially now with gas prices and the looming gas rationing system we saw in the late 1970s.
Better-Credit6701@reddit
The average 0-60 times across all the prius line is just shy of 10 seconds and they handle like a pig
2WheelTinker-@reddit
This is fun because I love cars and driving, but hate commuting. So I have a Prius to commute, a ‘68 road runner to have fun, and an off road rig on 40’s to tear up the trails!
Having a practical vehicle to do practical things is just… practical.
rallydemon@reddit
I disagree, there is no law that says you need to drive a toaster to and from work. I am not really a truck guy but I have 4 manual transmission cars that put a smile on my face everyday, I have fun while I am driving, doesn't matter if it is to work, the grocery store or a vintage racing event. Oh, and I would venture to guess I am just as much of a car guy as you.
2WheelTinker-@reddit
You must be lucky enough to actually be able to “drive” to work and not sit in traffic for hours per day.
at614inthe614@reddit
I would love to love (or even like) a Prius, or almost any Japanese brand car.
I grew up in a car-knowledgable household and have lived with an automotive engineer for 25 years. We don't have the desire to own a dozen cars at once, so a milquetoast car doesn't cut it.
I'm not even talking fancy or expensive, but for the same price we'll buy a used German car over a new J car every day.
wildhamsterscelica@reddit
Buy Japanese cars, lease German cars. Germans haven’t made a good car since 2004.

My sister has had a GTI since new (2016) and it’s been a huge money pit with things constantly going wrong, mostly electrical and one of the pumps (water I think). She loves the car, it drives like a dream, but she only ever had Hondas and an Acura prior and will go back once she sells the GTI.
I was looking for a car a couple of years back and she wanted me to buy the GTI from her. I’m glad I declined and bought a 2025 Civic hybrid hatchback instead. Best decision.
JockoMayzon@reddit
I've had a Prius since 2005 when I bought my first one that our family managed get 265,000 miles on it before my son rear ended a pickup with a massive trailer hitch and tore the lights on the Prius to the point where the car would not pass safety inspection without an major repair.
My second Prius is a 2020 that I manage to average 100+ MPG as it is a plug-in that goes 25 miles on a charge before the engine kicks in.
HOWEVER, I do not consider them as cars. They are boring but very efficient. I call them transportation appliances.
I also have a 1998 BMW Z3 -6 cyl, 5 speed, manual. That's a car!
randuug@reddit
saw a Z3 not long ago, thought that thing must be a blast to drive. good for you :)
how do you like it?
JockoMayzon@reddit
It's just right for me. I was not familiar with the model when it was new and was looking for a Miata or a well maintained Triumph or MG at the time and I found this for sale by a broker who specialized in these sorts of cars.
randuug@reddit
sounds like a great find. I think I’d rather have one of those than a Miata as well.
JockoMayzon@reddit
Yeah, it's a good car but it has that BMW expense to keeping it in good condition. I've bought it about four years ago for $9K and I've spent $2K on the ignition system, brake lines, and general maintenance, but the tech tells me it's in very fine shape now and parts are not an issue as it shares a lot of parts with 3-Series BMW.s The odometer is now at 88,000 and the passenger seat leather has a major split that I've covered with a leather like patch, but otherwise, it's in great shape. I am lucky to have a semi-heated garage to store it in.

dxrey65@reddit
As a mechanic, all the enjoyment of driving has pretty much been sucked out of me over a 40 year career. I drive a Prius I got for $5k, which works perfectly, never causes any problem, and gets 50 mpg. I'd buy another one just the same if mine crapped out. It's great coming back from a cross-country trip and telling the guys how I just spent $40 in gas, where most cars would have burned two or three times that.
But, yes, is it a boring car. I just find enjoyment in other things.
Much_Essay_9151@reddit

tingly_sack_69@reddit
It's zero fun to drive
rallydemon@reddit
The Prius is just a bland get me from point A to point B car. There is nothing fun or engaging about the car or the driving experience. It also seems to appeal to overly cautious, slow drivers who always seem to be in my way. Look at a line of 5 to 10 cars stuck on a 2 lane road driving 55 and odds are there is a frickin Prius at the front of the line.
TheThinDewLine@reddit
I like cars and driving but in this economy I do not give a fuck.
Own-Review-2295@reddit
i'm getting to that point. i love driving my car but fun car fuel economy is beginning to be way more stressful than driving an econoshit box that does 0-60 in 8 seconds. i'm up to $50-$60 every 5-6 days to keep my car fueled up and it's painful.

Just check battery health. It’s less expensive to get an independent to install a new battery than the stealership, 1/3rd to 1/4th the cost.
Hybrids are great for a to b, Priuses and hybrids in general age well it seems. I had a mk2, I still see a lot of those around.
Just get a pre purchase inspection on anything you get, check the records and carfax to make sure the service is done on time and a clean title.
I found cargurus to be the best site, auto trader is good too.
There was a Lexus Prius that’s more comfortable that would fit the budget pre war, hybrids are more now I think.
Jakomako@reddit
You can buy a battery pack and install it yourself. It’s not difficult.
inaccurateTempedesc@reddit
I used to own a few Priuses, yeah it's 100% for people who hate driving...but in a good way. They're boring in a way that reduces your anxiety/stress, totally opposite from a lot of modern cars that are still boring but absolutely piss you off.
I miss them the most when I'm sleep deprived with killer headache but I still need to commute to work. I
Talentless_Cooking@reddit
If your total budget is 12k, spend 10k or less, it's a budget for repairs. The one thing that's a gotcha on prius is the cat, they are targeted for theft and they are crazy expensive to replace.
joshua0005@reddit (OP)

dfm503@reddit
The Prius is a technically good car. It entirely lacks any amount of joy. It’s the Colin Robinson of automobiles, and will reach 400k miles by slowly draining the life force of its drivers. The interior is very practical and it’s well built though.

I’d pass on the Prius, a lot of people don’t realize that ev batteries fail, and when they fail, you will not be able to drive your Prius at all. I’d find honestly any care made within 10 years ago under 7k and just repair whatever problems it has
SirWillae@reddit
The Prius is a great car. I'd go for it
bjective-coffee-345@reddit
Prius is a painfully sensible choice, which is both good and slightly tragic. Main things I'd watch are hybrid battery condition, catalytic converter theft risk, and whether a 2010 to 2015 has any signs of head gasket or brake actuator drama.
AdInternational6902@reddit
Okay so here's the thing, a prius when new is a great car, used is a different story, gen 2 through 4 all have some pretty serious issues especially past 150k miles, head gaskets issues are prevelant, brake actuator failure, oil consumption, hybrid battery degrading, the interior on gen 2s literally disintegrates. these are all expensive problems, problems you dont want. Age also accelerates these issues.
I usually recommend something really cheap and easy to fix.
A honda fit, ford fiesta(5 speed manual only), mitsubishi mirage, scion/toyota ia, 2014+ mazda 3, etc
All of these cars can get 40+ mpg on the highway, are bulletproof reliable, very cheap to maintain, insure and buy in general. They are in my opinion much better buys than an old prius plus more fun if manual
CalligrapherRight343@reddit
I HIGHLY recommend the Honda Fit. Had one and loved it before it was totaled. My daughter was driving and when I picked her up, she was standing in the side of the road, completely fine. Not a scratch on her. For reliability, safety, and MPG, I will always recommend the Fit.
joshua0005@reddit (OP)
Thank you!
Jamaidian@reddit
It's hard to argue against the Prius given your circumstances, but here are some alternatives which may make more or less sense depending on your local conditions and regulations:
Civic/Accord/Corolla/Camry/Fit/Jazz/Matrix, possibly pre-Renault Nissan Altima/Sentra. These are mechanically sound and easily repaired by anyone, and while the mpg will be lower than a Prius, it will still be better than most other vehicles as long as you don't opt for any V6 options. Aging cars present other costs, but can also make the initial investment very low.
Diesel VW Golf/Jetta. Less likely to be the best fit, but worth looking into. Hybrid-like fuel economy, but there are extra considerations such as emissions and not letting anyone drive your car and accidentally put gasoline/petrol into it.
Sporty or otherwise "extra" but economical 4 cylinders of any variety. Subaru, Miata, etc. Counterintuitive but due to their nature and popularity the amount of aftermarket support will likely be greater than other vehicles, and instead of being willing to help you work on it, you may find people eager to do so.
Good luck on your journey and whatever you get, take care of it and it will take care of you.
ScubaSteve7886@reddit
A Prius is a fantastic car! No you're not going to win any awards at a car show!
But if all you care about is getting from point A to B as reliably as possible and while using as little fuel as possible, it's very hard to beat a Prius!
250k+ miles is not unheard of on the powertrains.
Also, the Corolla hybrid is basically the exact same car in sedan form. Another option worth considering if you prefer sedans.
In terms of what you're looking for, a Prius (or Corolla Hybrid) would be my first recommendation. Really, all the Toyota hybrids are great options. Prius, Corolla Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, Rav4 Hybrid, Sienna Hybrid, and even their Lexus counterparts are all excellent choices in their respective classes. You can't go wrong with a Toyota hybrid.
It is my belief that while Toyota didn't technically invent the hybrid car, they perfected it and brought it to the masses.
While I'm an enthusiast, I am on the lookout for my next daily driver, I really like the new Camry Hybrids if that means anything to you. What's not to like about a comfortable, reliable car, that also gets 50 miles to the gallon?

TheGT1030MasterRace@reddit
My '02 is not a soulless mobility blob. It's plenty quick (downright zippy up to about 30), incredibly maneuverable, and still gets 44+ mpg. It's great fun to drive.
SirKronan@reddit
They're affordable, reliable and overall great. I owned one years ago. We put 90k miles on it with minimal maintenance. Not even brake pads due to regen braking. Saved tons of money at the pump.
My daughter has an old 2011 now. Runs great. Didn't cost a lot. She loves her prius, and she should. They're totally fine surprisingly normal to drive cars.
timmmarkIII@reddit
I've always hated the Prius....until the new one came out. It's beautiful! The old ones were intentionally ugly.
I'm not too sure about the battery pack. A buddy has a Camry Hybrid with only 92k miles, it needs a new battery. I'm looking after it till he gets back but I hate driving it. All the lights are on in the dash. Looks like a Christmas tree.
It looks great, so I suppose with Toyotas "reliability" it's worth fixing ($3000+?).
bradpliers@reddit
People like to rag on the Prius but I owned a used 2005 for a while and it was honestly a great car. It was passed down to me and just had its Prius battery replaced. Just make sure you dive into the vehicle History.
dutchman76@reddit
The $5k price difference buys a lot of gas, I bet you'll break even at best. But reliability is important, I'd focus on that
2Teslas1Dog@reddit
Smart. You’re young and don’t need anything that will give you a headache; Prius, perfect. Reliable and crazy efficient. Just slow. Honestly you dont need to go fast when young, itll reduce the stupid situations youll find yourself in on the road. Also, you wont care when you ding it, scratch it, whatever, it’s inevitable as a young/new driver. When you’re wealthy later you can buy a bmw benz and tesla then poke the losers above that said you have no aura.
joshua0005@reddit (OP)
I don't plan to ever have a sports car no matter how much money I make. If I were wealthy I wouldn't care about gas mileage, but I don't care about having a car with aura. Honestly having a sports car would make me feel bad because I would feel like I'm flexing my wealth on other people and I wouldn't want people to know I'm wealthy anyway.
I'm not a young or a new driver lmao. I've been driving for 5 years. I had a few dings in my first couple years of driving but the only problem I've had in the last 3 years was when some idiot changed lanes without looking to see if someone was in that lane and it turned out that I was in that lane and I only narrowly managed to avoid hitting them despite them changing lanes when I was about one car length behind them.

Expect to need a $3000 battery. That is why they are cheaper than a gas Toyota at that age.

Only 2 points. 1) if you have a bad back or knees you're gonna hate getting into and out of the Prius because it's so low to the ground and 2) because it's so small and low to the ground you're going to find that 18 wheelers may not actually see you. That's also the case for some pick-up trucks.

H3LL0FRI3ND_exe_file@reddit
If you want a Prius, don’t get one without having a professional do a health check on it first. You don’t want to buy one with a bad hybrid system as those parts can be fairly expensive to fix. If the battery is in good health, it’s hard to find a more economical car than the Prius as long as we’re strictly talking about cars with an internal combustion engine. EVs will be even less expensive to own, but then again, the buying price will be higher if you need one that actually has good range.
I have a Toyota hybrid that has the same powertrain as the Prius and it uses half the amount of gas per month than my previous Toyota Aygo with a tiny 3-cylinder engine did.

NipkowLines@reddit

Ogre6956@reddit
My daughter had a 2nd generation. Life 360 told me she topped out at 94 on one trip. The 2nd generation has two fatal flaws, ours has both. There is a capacitor that goes out the takes out the entire heads up display and the AC, and the brake booster goes out at some point. The capacitor is 40 cents but takes about 4 hours of disassembly to reach. The brake booster is 1900 dollars from Toyota, it's under the whole electrical system and it requires reprogramming of the ABS computer.
The 3rd Generation has oil consumption and engine failures. The 4th Generation is solid and got rid of the performance problems that a lot of people claimed for earlier generations. It's quicker than it should be because the electric motor works so well in conjunction with the internal combustion engine. You should be able to find earlier 4th Generation models in your price range. They were made 2016 through 2022.
I was a Prius hater back when they came out, but our 2nd Gen won me over when I was test driving it.

Will your parents let you charge at home? Chevy bolt EV may be another good option. You’ll be able to find them for wayyy cheaper than a Prius per mileage. Maintenance costs are gonna be way lower too. In your budget you may be looking at something with around 80k miles.
joshua0005@reddit (OP)
Yeah I think they would but I'd have to ask. For EVs do I just need a special charger and then essentially I charge it like I charge my phone?
fluteofski-@reddit
Car should come with a charger. Usually comes with 120v but sometimes they supply the more powerful 240v. If not, it’s maybe like $100 for a cheap 120v.
If you charge on the regular 120v (also known as L1) you’ll be able to get about 60 miles charged overnight. (Roughly 25%)
If you charge with a 240v (like a dryer outlet also known as L2) you’ll be able to fully charge the car overnight from zero.
We ran the 120v for about 5 years before finally installing the 240v. Just plugged in like every other night.

Its_bigC@reddit
It’ll be slower than shit but it’ll be perfect otherwise. Always get a PPI
joshua0005@reddit (OP)
What does slower mean? Do you mean it can only get up to a certain speed like 60 mpg? or that it takes a long time for it to get from 0 to 60?
RevolutionaryBrain75@reddit
They don't have a "governor" so to speak, limiting top speed. They can be quite slow to accelerate to highway speo, especially if the hybrid battery is older. Not really an issue, but something to be aware of in certain situations. My friend has a 2008, and he basically has to floor the gas pedal if he's accelerating onto anything besides neighborhood roads.
joshua0005@reddit (OP)
Thanks
Chessdaddy_@reddit
It’s just people talking. You can get a Prius going way over the speed limit it just takes longer than a sports car
AlphaDisconnect@reddit
There are heatpump issues. Cold weather has an effect on the battery. Now you have an engine. And a whole electric system. But Toyota has this more or less figured out.
UncleSlayton77@reddit
A 10-ish year old Prius could be about due for a battery pack replacement. I'd recommend a 2013+ Mazda 3 with the 2.0L SkyActiv engine. Fantastic MPG and simple and cheap to maintain. Plus they're very reliable. And you can pick from a sedan or hatchback, automatic or manual. I had a 2014 Mazda 6 with the 2.5 motor and cracked 38 MPG with it. It was also fun to drive and handled very well.
And your definition of "horrible" is relative. I used to drive a 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a 5.9L V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor which got 9-13 MPG. After I got it tuned perfectly I averaged 12 MPG.

EuroCanadian2@reddit
Google the model year you are looking at to see if there are common 9roblems, then ask / check if those have happnend and been fixed already. Around 2010 to 2014 there were some issues. Brake booster and head gasket I think.
You can use a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter and the Dr Pruus app to check hybrid battery health.
Universe-nova@reddit
They depreciate really fast compared to other cars, and I think the most expensive repair you'll have with a Prius is the battery since they are so specific for the car. I think those batteries range from a couple grand to close to $5,000. Other than that, it's pretty much like any other car. Be sure to dive into some research on the car and that should help you decide if you want it!
SaltLakeBear@reddit
If your only requirements are getting you from A to B, being reliable, and getting the best fuel economy possible, then yeah, a Prius is gonna be one of the best options you can get. You might want to check out a Honda Insight and see how it compares since they're direct competitors, but they were designed from the ground up for efficiency.
I'd also look into other Honda and Toyota hybrid sedans (Camry and Accord are midsized, Corolla and Civic are compacts) as options also. They're not going to be quite as efficient, but they'll be close, and you might be able to save a couple bucks.
As an alternative, since all your driving is local, you could get an EV. That erases the fuel economy question altogether, BUT that is only the case if you can charge at home. Since you live with your parents, maybe ask them about the possibility of installing a level 2 charger. If they're not willing to, I'd pass on an EV unless you're certain you drive less than 40 miles a day on average and can live with charging it with a regular 110v extension cord. Also, EVs tend to depreciate quick, and while they're cheap and relatively simple, if the battery isn't healthy it could cost more than the car to replace.
BigTimeRaptor@reddit
To me if its got 4 wheels and an engine its good to go! You sound exactly like me when I got my first car. Get yourself a Prius and go everywhere that you possibly can with it and have fun saving money along the way doing it in a Prius.
Getting there, (wherever that is 😉) is the #1 point to getting a car. Everything else was a second thought to me and took a back seat until I could, finally, upgrade.
Just dont buy a clapped out one or else you'll be learning how to fix it and spending all your money fixing everything on your own.
Spend your time now diligently learning all you can about the Prius and what to look out for and inspect before you do buy one. And whatever you do, for Pete's sake, take it to get a PPI, pre purchase inspection from a good mechanic shop, before you buy it. Best of luck to you🚗
REV_MATCH68@reddit
Spending 12k or less on a Prius with a clean title means looking at cars that are 10+ years old and if I'm not mistaken, hybrid battery packs generally last 10-15 years. Not sure of total mileage you get out of them, but they aren't cheap to replace. Have you considered looking at non hybrid cars like a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic? Those are very dependable, cheap to maintain and get good fuel economy.
joshua0005@reddit (OP)
Wow Corollas do get good MPG.ybah might be a better choice
RevolutionaryBrain75@reddit
Serious answer: The Prius is a great choice.
It will tick all the boxes you're looking for. It will get you there, be reliable, get great gas mileage, and even be reasonably comfortable.
There is a reason they have a reputation for being mind numbingly boring cars, and are use a lot for taxi cabs.
Some things to watch for on the used market: The infotainment/control screen in the center console can start to fail on older models. Replacements for first and second generations are getting harder to find, but many used bits are out there.
The hybrid batteries become less effective over time (charge/discharge cycles reduce overall capacity in all rechargeable battery types, some worse than others. It's a chemistry thing). Prius batteries are known to need replacement after 10 or so years and over 150k miles. Replacement is typically around $3-4k depending on area and model year.
Beyond that, follow routine maintenance and they're pretty darn bullet proof.
Any time you are looking at a used car, do some research on common issues and wear points, bring a checklist so you don't forget in the moment, and a flashlight. ChrisFix on YouTube has a pretty solid general guide to buying used cars, and I recommend it whether you wind up buying from a dealership or private seller.
Good luck!
joshua0005@reddit (OP)
Thank you so much!!
Manderthal13@reddit
IDK how good of a used hybrid you can get for $8-12K. Be sure to do your research regarding batteries. Age and mileage will affect them. You might not care about cars but if you're going to own one you'd better learn about them. Even a crappy used Prius is going to require proper maintenance. Someone owned that used car and chose to get it out of their life forever. Why and how much will you need to do to keep it working. Also consider a bus pass.
joshua0005@reddit (OP)
Yeah I know I need to learn about them more but what I wanted to say when I said I don't care about cars is I literally just want to be able to get around my city I don't care about what car I have or if I have a cool car so I might as well just do it as cheaply as possible
The problem with bus passes is that at least in my city the bus only comes at certain times and doesn't go everywhere so it's just too inconvenient. I'm frugal but eventually I will pay more money for the convenience and having a car is one of those cases. However to me that car doesn't have to be a sports car or a car that I think will impress people.
Mindless_Silver2754@reddit

The second gen prius is extremely reliable but they are getting pretty old at this point. If you can find one with low miles, a replaced battery, amd good maintenance this is the best option. The gen 3 look nicer, drive nicer, but the engines are not as reliable. They have a tendency to consume oil so if you cant be bothered to check your oil regularly, then skip this gen. The 4th gen fixes the oil consumption issue, but they may be out of your price range. All around, all of them are excelent vehicles if you take care of them.
