A little fin fact (pun intended), whales are naturally curious and social, and will often swim on their sides in an attempt to literally stare at you. It's behavior that's seen a lot by whale watchers.
Antarctic minke whale is correct. To give credit to the photographer, this was posted by @livfortheocean (on Instagram), she’s a phenomenal naturalist normally out of Hawaii but was posting about her Antarctic trip.
Another possibly dumb question but is that a calf because the other one sorta outa frame seemed to be the same size ? Or are minke whales just really small whales? 🤦♂️🤷♂️🫠
Had a 40 ft sei whale scratch her nose on our boat once. I don’t understand people that don’t slow down or come to all stop for whales to have th right of way. They are incredible.
Some people are just not very smart, and not very kind. I’ve seen people chasing whales and dolphins on boats before, and it’s incredibly frustrating.
But I’ve also seen (from another boat) one of the Rottnest Island ferries, which are large catamarans, come to an almost complete stop moments before a humpback launched itself from the water in front of it. I didn’t even know they could slow down that fast, but I reckon they must be used to keeping a lookout for humpbacks on that particular crossing, it’s basically a humpback highway.

Is this a baby or an adult whale?

It is almost always a special moment when a whale goes out of its way to mug you like this.

It’s so cute, visually it’s like a dog or cat rolling belly up for scratches <3

This might come off as a dumb question but what kinda whale is that?
MrUpVoteDownvote@reddit (OP)
The common minke whale or northern minke whale from what I’m gathering. I could be wrong though.

I’m leaning Antarctic Minke Whale based on the lack of white patches on the upper sides of the pectoral fins.

I think maybe a young whale? You are both right minke whales are small (smallest of the baleen whales) but this one does look young
ChubbyGreyCat@reddit
They are just really small (as whales go) 🥰

It went back to normal position. It seems as though it may have been playful toward the boat. Like a big ol' bath toy 😂

Is that a Minke?
