Surprising truck aggression on I-5 at WA/OR Interstate bridge

So, I'm frequently surprised by the aggression of truckers on my daily commute. Part of my evening route is to take I-5 southbound over the Columbia river between WA/OR. It's reverse commute so traffic exists but still flows at 50-70 mph. "
There is something about this stretch of road, at this time of day, that leads to some really questionable driving behavior. There are a couple miles of gentle downhill leading up to the bridge. The speed limit is 60 mph in this stretch. Cars are doing 70 in the left lane, pretty normal. But then here comes a trucker, tailgating the ever loving shit out of somebody in the far left lane. The first few times I figured it was just an oddity. But lately I see this almost every day. (Not all truckers- just an insane minority).
Picture- a line of 50 cars in the left lane, all going 70-75 in a 60, with a trucker at the tail end who is maybe 5 feet off the bumper of the last car. Not even exaggerating- less than 1/2 a car length. I completely fail to understand the logic here. Even if the trucker had a magic button to delete the car blocking him, there are 49 more cars in front who still exist.
It gets even worse as you approach the actual bridge. The speed limit drops to 50 mph over the bridge, because it is ancient and the lane widths are reduced and there are no shoulders. Plus the road kinks to the left just as it joins the bridge (terrible design). Anyways, nobody slows down AT ALL. Now the trucker is doing 75 in a 50, tailgating, and visibly pissed.
It's also interesting that WSP never positions a trooper here. Possibly because of jurisdiction issues the moment that truck enters Oregon? And safety issues from pulling over a vehicle anywhere on the approach which could lead to a traffic backup or even accidents from rubber necking.
Anyhow, in all my years of driving I have never seen more trucker aggression than at this specific location/time. I've watched semis weaving thru traffic that is doing 50 mph (the speed limit) in the middle of the bridge, with black smoke pouring out their stacks. The best theory I have is that they know there is ZERO enforcement, so about 10% of them go Mad Max. Plus the nice easy downhill to gain speed, and a desire to maintain speed on the uphill portion of the bridge. Curious if this is the case or if I'm missing something. I must say, it is wildly dangerous and I am amazed I have not witnessed a fatality. It's not like the surrounding cars are full of excellent drivers as you enter Oregon, just saying.
So, what's the deal here? Is this just a place where truckers are horribly rushed to make a connection at the end of the day? Do none of them have driver monitoring systems? GPS that shows speed vs speed limit? I have a hard time thinking employers would be ok with this type of aggression in a loaded truck. Are they all independent operators?
As an aside- I'm generally not in favor of self driving trucks but I would trade out this handful in a heartbeat. They really aren't doing your profession any favors! And, I'm sure a bunch of replies will accuse me of being a slow, incompetent driver. Not at all- I'm fast, and have an excellent driving record. I spent a decade on sport bikes lane splitting in California. I'm not a wilting flower here.

foreigners
Tiny-Ask-7100@reddit (OP)
Mid 40 foreigners who are white? Seems... unlikely.
Radiant_Swan187@reddit
Ahhh. Because foreigners are only brown people. Got it. Guaranteed you've said they all look alike before
Tiny-Ask-7100@reddit (OP)
Wildly wrong, but ok. Par for the course on a Reddit post I suppose. Not even going to bother being angry, just laughing.
wukillabee2744@reddit
Just own it bro.. you 100% implied that foreigners can only be people of color, brown, black, Asian, indians.. whatever!! What you fail to realize is there is equally the same problem with white foreigners as with other races of foreigners. These Russians, Albanians, Slavics, etc.. be driving wreckless as well. I see it every single day. In fact I would say its about equal the amount of Russians & Indians on people's assets, using their truck as a "fuck you get outta my way sign"
Tiny-Ask-7100@reddit (OP)
Hmm. I only said it was unlikely, not impossible. You, on the other hand are convinced a bad driver is foreign. Why? You think born and raised Americans can't also be a shitty? I say the jury is out with no real evidence.
More importantly- please tell the the Trucker forum can use the word "asses". If this gets my post blocked I'm going to laugh for a while. I thought Truckers were tough or something. As an ex fisherman I'm concerned for y'all now.

are foreigners only non white? seems unlikely

Truck driving already leans pretty conservative, so the racists have been getting even bolder lately. I'm sure I don't know why...

While I don't tailgate in the left lane (anymore) I know exactly why that truck is. The entire right lane sees the whole string of traffic coming and they want ahead of the truck. There's 50 cars and then 1 truck you say? There's 10,000 more behind that truck all upset he's in the left lane. He needs to be a bit wreckless or else some car will use a shoulder to pass and brake check him. Can't let more then half a car length open up or a car will get in there and slow him down, making all the traffic behind even more angry at the truck. It's a whole packed freeway with multiple lanes but everyone is watching this 1 truck and they want ahead of it
Tiny-Ask-7100@reddit (OP)
Not really. This is near Oregon, and people are notoriously chill here.
And let me get this right - you are arguing that the commercial trucker needs to drive recklessly to do his job? My uncle was a trucker his entire life and he would disagree with every fiber of his being.
Exact-Leadership-521@reddit
My aunt had wheels. Doesn't change the fact people will see the truck coming along and change lanes right in front of it.
Tiny-Ask-7100@reddit (OP)
That's not what is happening at all, although it might in your location. I'm talking about 100 cars all driving smart with good gaps between them. Nobody is upset at the truck for being in the left lane and nobody is trying to pass them, let alone on the shoulder. And then there is one road raging semi truck, risking death and destruction. Standing out like a sore thumb. Can you picture that? It's very odd which is why I am asking.
Like, 200 cars on the bridge at once and the only vehicle trying to weave thru is the truck.
Note that 98% of trucks are driving easily in the center lane at nearly the same speed.
Clearly I need video or it didn't happen. Maybe the guy is just on meth, or got told to be at base by 6 or he's fired. Only reasons that almost make sense.
Exact-Leadership-521@reddit
Whys it 50 cars and then 100 and by the end its 200? I think you should focus on yourself and don't worry about 1 truck
Tiny-Ask-7100@reddit (OP)
Does it matter if it's 50 or 100 cars in the left lane? Nope. The 200 cars was for all 3 lanes on the bridge.
I will continue to worry about the 1 truck that is road raging next to me. Mainly because I am interested in my survival. I also care about the innocent person the truck is tailgating. You don't have to give a shit about them or anyone else. It's a free country after all.
Exact-Leadership-521@reddit
Maybe to the truck it seems like you were doing everything possible to get in front of him, so he was protecting that small space that you seemed to want to make even smaller?
It's the strangest thing, you can do 5mph in the right lane and nobody will change lanes ahead of you, over the horizon will be clear. But you can do 25+ over the limit in any other lane and cars want in front like you can't even believe.
Tiny-Ask-7100@reddit (OP)
I literally was 2 lanes to the right chilling. Your imagination is active to say the least.
Exact-Leadership-521@reddit
I don't know why the cars in your story are fine but the truck is wrong for going the same speed. They probably had a cop sit there for a day and basically everyone flows around the corner and up the hill, except for these same 6 people every day at exactly 1 below the limit with 9,000 people trying to pass them. Everyone else seems chill
Tiny-Ask-7100@reddit (OP)
Because the cars are leaving 50+ feet between themselves while the truck is leaving 5. So simple.
No cops sit there, ever. Zero cops in 3 years of commuting.
Seriously I love how you just keep assuming. Your mental fantasy life is vivid.
Exact-Leadership-521@reddit
I don't know what more you want. I'm telling you he's doing that cause 10 feet would invite cars to take the space. 50+ get world encourage them to go all the way across multiple lanes to the right and then all the way back left to cut him off cause he's going to slow in the left lane. It's commonly called the Felony Lane and stuff like that cause you only go there to drive wreckless.
LedgerLawFirm@reddit
A loaded semi at 75 mph needs roughly 525 feet to stop on dry pavement. At five feet of following distance you are not driving anymore, you are just hoping. FMCSA 392.14 covers reckless driving and Washington RCW 46.61.145 covers following too closely, both apply before that truck ever crosses into Oregon. WSP has jurisdiction on the Washington side of the bridge regardless of where a stop eventually happens.
Tiny-Ask-7100@reddit (OP)
I fully agree. But how does jurisdiction work if the crime occurs 0.5 miles from the border and the truck is immediately over it? Hand over to OSP? For what it's worth I've never seen an OSP trooper within 5 miles of that border. Ever. In years.
Rikishi6six9nine@reddit
I'd have to imagine it's a combination of reckless driving and the reckless drivers aren't familiar with the area. Between the quick speed drop and quick entering on coming traffic. I always leave a big space cushion entering there.
