Can you use NTTA TollTag in a rental car with holder from Amazon?

My girlfriend and I just moved from Florida to Texas and have SunPass Pros. It’s supposed to work on all Texas toll roads but we’re having repeated issues with them not being read and sick of getting bills in the mail with fees. We’ve tried moving it and even replaced them once but they’re still continuing to fail intermittently.
After speaking with my family about this matter, they recommended we switch to NTTA as they have been using them for years and have never had problems. However, we occasionally rent cars and NTTA only offers sticker transponders. I’ve been doing some research about this and seeing mixed verdicts.
Some people are saying you can add the rental car’s plate and it will still bill the account at the transponder rate. Others are saying the transponder is only tied to one vehicle and there’s no way to change it even temporarily. I understand the sticker will break once it’s removed which is why I’m planning on getting a mount from amazon and attaching the sticker to it so it won’t break when moved.
If I do this, will I be able to edit both the vehicle information and license plate information for the tolltag and switch it back to my car when I return the return the rental or is the tag permanently linked to my plate and vehicle with no way to edit?

When you try to add rental to your NTTA online, you get an error due to license plate being registered with rental company and it won't let you add it. I've tried contacting NTTA to get rental added, got days of run around and not sure it even worked.

You don’t need to transfer the sticker from one car to the next.
When you get a rental, go to the ntta site or app and put the license plate of the rental in your account as well as a timeframe for when it is active.
Ntta will read the license plate and charge your account.

Will it be charge at tag rate or ZipCash rate? Does this work when traveling out of state?
Aleyla@reddit
It is the Tag rate. Zip cash is when they have to look up who owns the car and mail a bill. If you don’t put the tag in then ntta will send a bill to the rental car company, who will add some extra to it and then charge the credit card you used to pay tor the rental.

I’ll try it out and see what happens because on NTTA’s website under FAQs, it says they will be charged to the account at the ZipCash rate but hopefully that’s not the case and I’ll still get the discount.

Did this end up working out? Planning on renting a car in May for a Texas to Colorado trip, and wondering about the toll tag

That seems needlessly complex.

This is great advice. Those rental company change like $10-15 for some be “admin fee”

I remember when NTTA toll tags were those small plastic boxes with velcro that could be moved from vehicle to vehicle. I am pretty sure sure I still have one somewhere.

I kept my plastic box for as long as possible. NTTA finally deactivated it and said that they would no longer honor it. That was a really sad day because I used to move It from car to car all the time. They sent me the sticker in the mail and told me that if I continued to use the box and did not use the sticker I would be charged for zip cash.

NTTA toll tags are just stickers. They cannot be moved. Even if you are clever and don’t use it like a sticker and try to move from car to car, you’ll probably just get double billed. Even if you ask to move it to a new car, they just send a new sticker. It’s not possible for them to move it.

When I had a rental for a few weeks, I was able to call NTTA to get the plate temporarily added to my account. If you show a willingness to pay for your tolls, they will gladly help you out.
